I'll have to wait until tomorrow to give it a shot and see what's going on with it when i have access to computers that can run photoshop at a respectable speed.

Tried going at it, 'old school' and used various sizes of chrome sockets to view the border. No joy. Crying or Very sad

Just a stupid thought.

Could CR be Czech Republic? ORRRR Costa Rica, possibly?

Anything's possible. Especially after such a long wait and given the "Tom" puzzle, we had before. It could be Colorado Rockies or a host of other things.

I played around with the spiral and did a version where the primes are white, twin primes are green and Mersenne primes are red.

How do I get a report out of GIMP with all the colors in an image, if I want to run it on the original?

*Bump* due to the result of the solve.

I generated a "pure green" version of the spiral and ran a difference on it, finding a few pixels that weren't pure green.
Two of them stood out as they were the same color (252/00FC00) AND kinda far out on the spiral and the same color value, so counting out from the middle using the corners (squares) and then individually, the numbers were 13075 and 53014.
ETA: One is left 58 pixels, so you go up and left on a diagonal for 58 pixels or pixel # 12,996 (114 2 ) then count down 79 to the changed pixel for a total of 13,075.
The other is left by 116 pixels or 230 2 = 52,900, then down 114 pixels for a total of 53,014.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Plugging that into Google Maps as: +53° 1' 4.00", +13° 7' 5.00"
Gives you:
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=53.017778,13.118056&spn=0.3,0.3&t=h&q=53.017778,13.118056

I entered the nearby town names and got a hit with Rauschendorf

The letter found is quite interesting:

MY STORY

My deepest respect and sincere congratulations to those who made it to this point.

At this stage I thought I would owe you some explanations.

My name is irrelevant. I am a recently retired civil engineer. My professional life was rich of large construction projects throughout the world and I have been a long-time fan of exotic cultures, computer science and unsolved mysteries.

I recently decided to take advantage of my free time and undertook a leisure sailing trip in the South Pacific on my Yacht (named Pilar, as for Hemingway's), a trip that would last two years.

After a couple of months spent in French Polynesia, I headed to Suvarov, an island well known to sailors, on which Tom Neale had lived alone for six years in the 50s and 60s. The great navigator Bernard Moitessier (which most famous story is The long way) also contributed to the fame of the island by stopping there on several occasions and fighting for its preservation.

While on Suvarov, I met a fellow sailor who had just spent time in the Marshall islands. We talked for hours about the numerous shipwrecks that can be found all around. As you know, the atolls in this part of the world had been used as military bases by the Japanese army during the second world war and they had been showered with bombs by the American aviation. I was passionate about the issue and I decided to prolong my journey and explore these islands for a couple more months. I headed North-West and after 24 days of navigation I reached Taroa in the atoll of Maloelap.

After some interesting dives in the lagoon, I engaged in a friendly relationship with a young diver at the local scuba diving club. He showed me a little metal plate that he had discovered weeks ago while exploring the Toreshima Maru. The vessel, now lying below water at a short distance from the beach, had been the last supply vessel to reach Taroa during the war. It was sunk by the American forces in December 1943.

The metal plate was oval shaped, one side bore the word Enigma, while on the other were carved a 8-digit number (that I would later identify as Leonardo Da Vinci's birth date), the coordinates 44°30N 64°17W and a long series of letters grouped by packets of five. These coordinates were clearly pointing to Oak Island and I quickly recognized the subsequent letters as a message encrypted with the Enigma machine in use by the Germans during the second world war.

The young diver claimed that he had found this plate in what had been the sailors' dormitory. It had likely been the property of one of the ship's sailors, but had the inscriptions anything to do with Taroa ? Had the sailor carved them by himself or had he found this plate somewhere else ? And in this case how could a Japanese sailor have become in possession of this Enigma machine plate ? Had someone discovered what Oak Island concealed for such a long time ?

I had very few tangible elements to answer these questions. So after a couple of busy weeks spent back in Europe, amongst other things to set up this quick and dirty website, I had to go back to Taroa in order to find new clues.

The reason why I have undertook to tell you all that on a coded website was to ensure that I could find smart persons who could help me solve the mystery. Unfortunately, this departure was made in a rush and didn't let me enough time to deliver you the last enigma. I understand how frustrating it must have been for many of you and I'm deeply sorry about that, but I had no other choice.

That is the story so far. Today I'm back home with a lot of new elements that I will share with you through several new websites in the next weeks. I'm sure you will be able to recognize them.

I would like to thank you in advance for your collaboration.

L.D.

Then there is a picture of the plate:

Actually, I'm kinda looking forward to whatever our mysterious treasure seeker has in store for us.
As I can't find a single shred of R/L info to support any of the story from the last page, I'm assuming it is a purely fictionalized experience.
And the quality of puzzles has been very good, overall, as has their keeping with the theme of the story.
I do wish there had been a better explanation of how we helped him/her figure out the bits they were having trouble with, to this point.
Whatever this is, it won't appeal to the folks who like to interact with characters, but to me, it does feel like we can (and have) affect the story through our guesses in the stats page.
Not so much 'alternate' reality with this, but there is that "This could actually be real." aspect.
