Biblical references

Anyone care to help me cobble together all of the biblical references? I know this list is incomplete.

1. The stolen bible (is it really just a bible?)

2. Mr. Ignatius Henderson sold bibles door to door (from pushtimes.com)

3. Biblical names:

A. Mary (Magdalene or Mom of Christ?)

B. Jim (James)

C. Shadrach:
The Biblical tale of Shadrach, Mesach and Abednego was one of strong believers condemned in the book of Daniel by Nebuchadnezzar to die in a fire. They were thrown in, only to discover that they would not burn, and, when the king's guards came to retrieve what they expected to be the three men's ashes, found FOUR live figures (the fourth commonly taken by Trinity theologians to be representative of a Holy Spirit type figure) wandering unmolested in the ovens.

D. Job

E. Silas

F. Enoch

G. Martha:
Luke 10:38-42 Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her"

H. Caleb

I. Delilah:

Judges 16:1 Samson and Delilah One day Samson went to Gaza, where he saw a prostitute. He went in to spend the night with her.

:2 The people of Gaza were told, "Samson is here!" So they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate. They made no move during the night, saying, "At dawn we'll kill him."

:3 But Samson lay there only until the middle of the night. Then he got up and took hold of the doors of the city gate, together with the two posts, and tore them loose, bar and all. He lifted them to his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron.

:4 Some time later, he fell in love with a woman in the Valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah.

:5 The rulers of the Philistines went to her and said, "See if you can lure him into showing you the secret of his great strength and how we can overpower him so we may tie him up and subdue him. Each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels [1] of silver."

:6 So Delilah said to Samson, "Tell me the secret of your great strength and how you can be tied up and subdued."

:7Samson answered her, "If anyone ties me with seven fresh thongs [2] that have not been dried, I'll become as weak as any other man."

:8 Then the rulers of the Philistines brought her seven fresh thongs that had not been dried, and she tied him with them.

:9 With men hidden in the room, she called to him, "Samson, the Philistines are upon you!" But he snappedthe thongs as easily as a piece of string snaps when it comes close to a flame. So the secret of his strength was not discovered.

:10 Then Delilah said to Samson, "You have made a fool of me; you lied to me. Come now, tell me how you can be tied."

:11 He said, "If anyone ties me securely with new ropes that have never been used, I'll become as weak as any other man."

:12 So Delilah took new ropes and tied him with them. Then, with men hidden in the room, she called to him, "Samson, the Philistines are upon you!" But he snapped the ropes off his arms as if they were threads.

:13 Delilah then said to Samson, "Until now, you have been making a fool of me and lying to me. Tell me how you can be tied." He replied, "If you weave the seven braids of my head into the fabric on the loom and tighten it with the pin, I'll become as weak as any other man." So while he was sleeping, Delilah took the seven braids of his head, wove them into the fabric

:14 and [3] tightened it with the pin.Again she called to him, "Samson, the Philistines are upon you!" He awoke from his sleep and pulled up the pin and the loom, with the fabric.

:15 hen she said to him, "How can you say, 'I love you,' when you won't confide in me? This is the third time you have made a fool of me and haven't told me the secret of your great strength."

:16 With such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was tired to death.

:17 So he told her everything. "No razor has ever been used on my head," he said, "because I have been a Nazirite set apart to God since birth. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man."

:18 When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines, "Come back once more; he has told me everything." So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands.

:19 Having put him to sleep on her lap, she called a man to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. [4] And his strength left him.

:20 Then she called, "Samson, the Philistines are upon you!" He awoke from his sleep and thought, "I'll go out as before and shake myself free." But he did not know that the
LORD had left him.

:21 Then the Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes and took him down to Gaza. Binding him with bronze shackles, they set him to grinding in the prison. 22 But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.

4. Locales:

A. Demonhead flats
B. Satan's ridge

5. Radio sermons:

A. Ep. 1: Acts 22 Saul is on the road to Damascus and is blinded. It creates a new and dangerous life for him. - a metaphor to what was going on in the show.

- I know there were at least two in Ep.3 Anyone get 'em?

6. Quotes:

A. "Television is the word." -Sunny Dupree

B. "Behold, the word of the lord." - Shadrach to grave diggers while holding the bible.

Speculation:
A. Jim is Jesus - the bleeding tattoo might be some sort of stigmata, and Jim's ordeal wandering in the desert to be evocative of either Christ's ordeal when confronting the serpent during his fast, or, for more orthodox-minded non-Christians, perhaps Moses' deliverance in the Old Testament.

B. In ep. 4 when he is in the mortuary, there is a close up of Jim with christ in the background.

Religous concepts:
A. Grace...not a biblical character, but definitely a religious concept.
a: unmerited divine assistance given humans for their regeneration or sanctification b: a virtue coming from God
c: a state of sanctification enjoyed through divine grace

B. Seven Deadly Sins
1. Envy
2. Sloth
3. Gluttony
4. Wrath
5. Pride
6. Lust
7. Greed

wow, i hadn't even considered that. you're right though. whenever i've moved, i've always contacted the chamber and churches are always one of the first lists you see from them. you'd think that on the chamber pages they'd mention a couple denominations and such. for having so many other biblical references you can't say that they just didn't think about them. well, you could, but for the purpose of spec it's more fun to not say that Smile the most outright religious statements that we've seen online are the Father that's organizing the trip to Carson City and the fact that Eunice Blackwell is a psychic medium.

Not to mention that the closest thing to a priest at Silas' funeral was Shadrach's radio. Confused

This town is being run by Watermark and the casino operation. Given that, and the fact that the preacher on the radio abhors gambling, do you think Watermark would allow a church to operate in town?

There must be a church *somewhere* near Push. Consider this ad in the Push Times personals:

Slot Addict DBF, 50's, Telemarketing pays the bills, loose Slots show my skills. Seeking CM to share love of life, G-d, and jackpots. personals93SPLATpushtimes.com

The response (according to a post at ARGN) says:

Im at the Versailles on Saturday night, and in Church on Sunday morning. Stop by either place. You'll know me when you see me. D.

Maybe "D" drives to the next town? And no, that isn't Dawn's D, seeing how the ad says "divorced black female".

I would add at least one other (thematic) Biblical reference to pushfreak's excellent start of a list. The Biblical tale of Shadrach, Mesach and Abednego, as has been recognized by many posters on other forums, was one of strong believers condemned in the book of Daniel by Nebuchadnezzar to die in a fire.

Obviously this parallels the Caleb situation in the crematorium. Interesting juxtaposition, though, since one would expect Shadrach, not Caleb, to be the body which would not burn in the fire.

If you want to stretch the Jim/Jesus parallels, I suppose one could read the bleeding tattoo as some sort of stigmata, and Jim's ordeal wandering in the desert to be evocative of either Christ's ordeal when confronting the serpent during his fast, or, for more orthodox-minded non-Christians, perhaps Moses' deliverance in the Old Testament. I would look carefully for a Lazarus-type figure to also appear in the future. Just my hunch, but there you go.

If so, we should see Jim facing major temptation of some sort soon.

Wealth? Fame? Power?

As far as temptation, what about Mary?

Yes, I can see Mary as a MAJOR temptation. Also anyone notice that she always calls him by his full name? Do you always carry 2 handkechiefs Jim Prufrock? It's never just by his first or last name. Any signifigance?

Actually, I distinctly remember her calling him by just his first name a number of times back in episode 1 at Sloman's. I'm not sure what's going on with the whole name thing though, because at Silas's murder, Oswald also called Jim by his full name when he told Jim to get out of town. Is it just some mechanism to show that everybody in town knows exactly who Jim is, even though he's never met most of them?

According to TV Guide online, a character named "Delilah" will prominently figure in ep 5 (assuming we make it that far Rolling Eyes )

Don't forget about Grace...not a biblical character, but definitely a religious concept.

a : unmerited divine assistance given humans for their regeneration or sanctification
b : a virtue coming from God
c : a state of sanctification enjoyed through divine grace

I'm thinking the first one is the one the writers were shooting for.
