ARGFest-o-con 2007 - San Francisco March 2-4
Just before GDC 2007 which starts on March 5th
Event starting Fri Mar 02, 2007 4:00 am for 3 days

A couple of months ago Wraith had the excellent idea of us having an ARGFest of some kind in or around San Francisco right before or after GDC. As we saw from the PXC San Francisco event, we have lots of west coast players and all the developers will be around for GDC. I know that Adrian Hon of Mind Candy is scheduled to do a talk on ARGs at GDC already.

So here's the question: what do people think of the idea?

I'm thinking of something generally along the lines of ARGFest-o-con NYC - which basically took shape as we planned it. I have a quasi- theme in mind which is ARGs - no whiners; no wankers." This theme is inspired by some of the less than inspiring talks at the Come Out and Play Festival. (Note - These talks were very much the exception and not the rule, but they stood out clearly as Things To Be Avoided.)

Pretty much the theme means anything relating to ARGs is fair game as long as you don't whine or pontificate pointlessly about....well, at all, I guess.

Probably the format would be something like - friday night dinner, games, drinking, etc. Saturday - talks or PM training or whatever. Saturday afternoon/evening - some sort of Festquest or pervasive game. Saturday night- dinner/drinking/ whatever sort of things people want to do. Sunday - brunch -sightseeing or something ARG related. I learned from before that keeping an open/flexible plan is the best way to start.

I'm thinking we might want to have a PM training session of some sort, since we missed that in New York.

Also, like before, our primary goal is to get people together to talk about our shared avocation at as low a cost as possible. I'm hopeful that I can find some people who will sponsor some of the costs for us. I want to keep it as inexpensive as humanly possible so that as many people who want to attend can make it.

Um, should be people be interested, I'm willing to do a lot of the organizing, but I will need help and some on the SF scene people to help with some stuff. I promise not to stress too much, Space told me I wasn't allowed to plan ARGFest because of the stress level it engendered, but having done it once, I think I can handle it with more poise and aplomb and I also promise to totally give bagsbee a free pass on helping.

I've been waiting for Wraith to post this, but I haven't been around for a while and probably he wanted to talk to me about this first. I know he is very keen on it.

So, what do you think?

I won't take it too personally if people think this is a terrible idea as long as a helpful constructive suggestion is offered as a replacement. I'm certainly not wedded to this plan and am open to suggestions. Smile

no location/time vote this year? {i thought there was a runner up from before that was a possible choice for this year, or was this past year the runner up from NYC - i forget} And what is GDC? Come out and Play festival?

I think it is good to have organizers on both coasts btw rose, so i'm all for you being an organizer. I did like the structure in NYC - talks and free time. Not that I am threatening to come... LOL... One this is for sure, no more day trips for me, just makes me cranky and pisses everyone else off.

Last years runner up was Las Vegas

But in Chicago when we were discussing '07, the GDC came up and many of us thought this was a terrific idea - back to the West Coast, high probability of guest speakers who are going to be in town anyway. Possible Aussie or Kiwi travelers willing to jump over the Big pond for the show.....save Las Vegas for '08?

Poor San Diego... dissed again Smile

At least I can make San Francisco... or at least a better chance of making it than if it were on the East Coast again.

If the GDC is on what does that do to hotel availability/cost?

Will rooms be available up to the last minute, as it seems some people like to leave it late to commit? Will function rooms be available or do lots of them get taken by side functions of the GDC?

And is cost inflated because of the event?

Also is IGDA connected to GDC?

I like the idea of having argfest at the time of GDC, there does seem to be some synergy.

West coast is more favorable to me, but I can't commit, my situation is influx to much.

We can do a location/vote. This doesn't even have to be the "official" ARGFest if people want to do another one.

Sorry I didn't explain what I was referencing.

GDC is the Game Developers Conference: http://www.gdconf.com/

IGDA certainly is involved with GDC where they present the Game Developer Awards. Anyone can get a free membership to IGDA though there are different levels of membership. http://www.igda.org/

Come Out and Play was just held here in the city as the "Woodstock of pervasive games." A panel discussion that included Jane McGonigal was part of the event. A couple of the panelists were more academically inclined and tended to not be as interested in creating games that players would enjoy.

I agree that at least among those who attended ARGFest Chicago, San Francisco/GDC was a generally viewed as a good idea. It's the West Coast's turn. (Other cities were discussed for after San Francisco.) And SF qualifies as "a place with enough other stuff going on that you can get bargain airfares and less expensive hotels if you need them and people are willing to travel there because there's so much to see outside of ARGFest," which is my primary criterion for good ARGFest locations.

Now that agreement (among the 20+ somewhat inebriated/sleep deprived/hung over ARGFesters in Chicago) of course is not the final word, so if somebody thinks there's a really strong argument to go somewhere else, speak up. Or put the name on the list for the vote for the year after.

Turning back to the SF idea - any chance we could link up with GDC in some manner and get their rates at the local hotels? Any GDC connections we could work there? Otherwise there are plenty of hotels, I wouldn't worry about GDC filling them all. But I bet GDC would be pretty well-located hotelwise.

We could even stay over in Oakland and ride the BART. (The place in Oakland that Ifurita suggested for PXC visitors was quite nice and not very expensive, considering. And right at a BART stop.) Indeed, Oakland may be the better idea anyway if we are really trying to keep it cheap.

The last few times I flew out there I've gotten MUCH better fares flying into Oakland rather than SFO, so wherever we end up staying don't forget to check that option with your airlines.

Maybe it's just when I went, but in my experience, if you're using frequent flyer miles, you need to book a flight earlier than you do for going to most other places. Just FYI.

So we might want to get dates nailed down as soon as conveniently possible.

GDC & Hotels

GDC fills all of the hotels closest to the convention center weeks ahead but up to the week or two before you can find hotels within walking distance. For GDC 2005, the last one held in SF, I found a room in a little boutique hotel right outside of the chinatown gate (for those familiar with the area) just a couple weeks before I went - but it was a bit pricey. The biggest nights for the hotels are Wed & Thurs - a number of people leave on Friday and, I'd bet, most check out by Saturday with only a few holdouts until Sunday. Rose's dates (March 2-4), however, are the weekend *before* GDC which won't be near as much a problem as the first two days of the week are tracked sessions (assuming they follow the same format that they have the past few years). While they are still well attended, they pale in comparison to the panels and presentations later in the week. And, those that do attend them probably come in on Sunday.

Aaah yes, Kona, I did say that was a distinct possibility didn't I.

Alas, now it is (probably) not, cos we may be coming over later this year (either this month, next month, or December... no idea yet).

Might get other Kiwi visitors though? Six? WK?

So...would the second weekend be better for ARGFest? A little closer to the GDC action? Or will people be conventioned-out and less likely to stay the extra days?

I was thinking or hoping at least this would generate more discussion. I'm fine with either weekend. I can contact the people we would like to have as speakers and tentatively work out a plan with them. I can also contact potential sponsors.

My time line is to finish up at least the dates before Thanksgiving, I'm not sure I can do it before then, but if I can I will.

So please:

1. Post if you are interested and would attend.
2. Indicate your preference if you have one, as to which weekend
3. Suggested topics, speakers and also fun stuff will be great appreciated.
4. We will def. need some local help.

Should we sticky this or make a poll? I leave that to the site admins. I was up all last night with the plane crash that happened near my building - some friends lived there, they are ok but had no place to go to stay nearby. So I won't be back until tomorrow or later, but, please, I don't want to get into this project if people aren't interested. You wont hurt my feelings, I would like to have some idea of who and how many people to expect or of who thinks this is not a good plan but has a better suggestion.

I'll attend

2. Indicate your preference if you have one, as to which weekend
Either - they both have their plusses and minusses for me. If it's before, I'll likely be wiped out for GDC and I'll be wiped out from GDC if it's the weekend after. So, do you tired & silly imbri or awake & sarcastic imbri?

3. Suggested topics, speakers and also fun stuff will be great appreciated.
For funstuffs - there's always tombstone hold'em and cruel 2 b kind - neither of which would take much planning. San Francisco is a cool city for a FestQuest - though with the hills, I wouldn't have people running all over the city as was done with NY but follow a model more like what was done in Vegas where the quest was in one location leading to foodstuffs afterward. As for topics and speakers and such, so many possibilities.

4. We will def. need some local help.
Not local but can help if you need it.

Now, I'll sticky it, but be warned, I'm moving it to social interactions.

I would love to attend - both for seeing SF, and for meeting argers on the other side of the continent. But I can't commit yet... $ and time is the issue, as usual

2. Indicate your preference if you have one, as to which weekend
Either's good by me (since I can't plan it in yet =P )

3. Suggested topics, speakers and also fun stuff will be great appreciated.
Anything's good... considering the Chicago argfest had none of that, if '07 does anything more than just 'social interaction', it's all good =)

4. We will def. need some local help.
not local, but if you want web help, I'm good for it Wink
