Mayor's Message 7/29 re: JD Willingham

Message from the Mayor of Aglaura

In memoriam - J. Douglas Willingham

Someone - I forget whom - once defined a eulogy as the praise of a person who has either the advantages of wealth and power, or the consideration to be dead.

It is with this definition in mind that I express my great sorrow for the
passing of a great attorney, colleague, and friend; Mr. Jethro Douglas
-- "JD" -- Willingham.

When we return to our Creator, I like to feel it is because we have lived our lives to their utmost . . . that we have fulfilled His grand design. But with this early passing of my dear friend and colleague, why . . . I must admit that the design appears flawed.

Oh JD, I see nothing grand in the heart attack that would take you from our lives and from our hearts... nothing grand in this tragedy that touches nearly every citizen here in Aglaura.

I find myself awash in memories past . . .

I remember JD as the shrewd, sagacious business man, learning to both select and win his battles with the greater good in mind...

I remember JD as the commensurate civil servant, ever helpful, kind, and caring about his community...

I remember JD as the headstrong but vigilant borough attorney, always putting Aglaura and the Council before his own personal needs...

I remember JD as the devoted family man... dear Phyllis, I feel the great pain of his loss as I would that of a brother.

JD... from body's birth to body's grave and then to birth again,
may your path to salvation be both swift and sure-footed.

In closing, I share with you a passage from an old favorite...

... so grieve a while, if grieve you must
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It's only for a while that we must part
So bless the memories within your heart.
I won't be far away,
For life goes on.
So if you need me, call and I will come.

JD... you'll be missed, but your legacy will live on.

Thank you.

Pat J. Dobbs
Mayor, Aglaura, NJ
(on behalf ot the Town Council of Aglaura)

Wonder if the Mayor is a practicing Buddhist?

And yes it is similar (if not exact) to a standard verse we use in the service folders in the funeral home I work in. Still I have this spec gnawing on the back of my head.... Sunny, can you grab a tissue and smoosh it off for me?
