Email Phyllis Grand Jury Verdict In

Dearest Sunny,

Well, it's official: Douglas and Sal Marzano have been accused by the Grand Jury of skimming money from the Library contract. How convenient that both men are now dead and can't defend themselves (heavy sarcasm). I believe I have said, "I don't know," at least 50 times today. I had to open the door to the state and federal investigators and a gaggle of media spilled through the door with them. It was chaos with a thousand questions ricocheting like bullets off the entry hall walls. The local police corralled them out the door and that left at least twenty others standing about, determining by exchanged glances, which of them would be the first to interrogate me.

To the state investigators, I gave the same answers to the same questions they asked on their last uninvited visit. They did have a couple of new questions: What was your husband's relationship with Dale Sprague? When was the last time you that saw Mr. Sprague and do you know his current whereabouts? I explained that we had a social relationship with Dale and his wife before her untimely death, that Douglas and Dale had associated through their respective positions
on the town Council, that I had seen Dale once in March and not again until Douglas' funeral. All of you could have answered these questions for me.

Then, the FBI had an entirely new line of questioning -- How well did your
husband know Tracie Schmidt? The implication left me gasping before I could reply, "Hardly at all unless you count his being interviewed by her a few times because of his job." And, did I know if Dale had a relationship with Tracie? Good Lord! Iris leaned into the fray and told them that it was very clear during our meeting with Tracie that she had not met Dale previously. Rumormongers! Slanderers and mudslingers! It was so exasperating! They took Iris off in another room to question her about our meeting with Tracie while they drilled me for the particulars.

And, we had to go through it all, again and again. They hammer and chip away like they are going to break through your defenses and a flood of new information will rush out. At the end, I just threw up my hands and
demanded, "Are you doing this to Don Mazano? I'm sure he knows more than I do!" The FBI exchanged meaningful glances and the state investigators looking quite discomforted but my outburst did bring the proceedings to a close.
At the door, as the Law filed out, the Media rushed back in again and it was up to James and Chris to boot them back out the door. Then, we had to summon the local police to get them off my property. There are still some of them on the street with their eagle eyes watching the windows, waiting for one of us to dare step out the door. Will I ever get any rest?!

Oh, and in the middle of all this, Wes called and I hurriedly said, I can't
talk now, without giving a hint to who was on the other end of the line. He
said he would call back later but he hasn't so far. I wonder what he had to
say...

Fondly,
Phyllis
