That was an email from ?? Probably Tristan? or JJ?

Seems very odd that it talks alot about John Green. Maybe this is our chance to get him to help us? Maybe an email telling JG that Claudia is not happy with his work, he was spotted at the camp grounds, and if he has anything he wants to share with us, now would be a good time?

The notes on the map update were really odd too: who cares how much money they make? I just found it weird, just like everything else that is going on lately.

We still havent been able to access The Forth Protocol at FoF, so while you are working passwords for NTS, see if you can magically produce one for both sites, thanks (lol)

From JJ, I'm assuming

NTS could mean almost anything. Most likely it means: needless to say. Since there's a password box and he titled the post "protected". A quick search of OOG tradecraft specific acronyms didn't pull up anything more likely.

There are two possibilities for this password that seem likely.
A) It follows some format that Royal Thames is aware of. He gives us clues and we can crack it from there. I mean, he did leave the note with the intent that someone else would find it and be able to access the contents without being in direct communication. Either RT or Germain, the two likely recipients of the original cipher, know how to crack the password.
B) The clue about languages is still active and it has something to do with Finnish. I doubt it's related to the raju business card, that would be too obvious. And I don't think it'll be a translation of Osprey, Fractal or anything that easy to guess.

No secrets in the source code. I tried "karianne," the name of the girl that we used as an identifier with Karla. No go. Anagramming rubypebble to "bubble" and "prey" didn't work. Neither did the words from the business card. "Mikethepoet" didn't work. Maybe the numbers from that card are another cypher since they don't seem to work as a phone number?

In Germain's password format, was Monday "1" or Sunday "1"? If the week started on Monday, then Allan's password would've been 67[ctry]7, not 77[ctry]7. But still odd that the post was 7/7/07.

I'm just digging for any connections. There was a 1970s movie called Ruby. Its caption in Finland was "riivaajan rakastettu" (devil beloved).

RT told us not to communicate with Karla anymore, but given the subject matter of their newspaper, wouldn't it be likely that she'd know how to get into secure communication with Allan? Should we try generating a lead with her?

another mystery solved..kinda

It seems NTS is shorthand for Note To Self.
It would seem that the writers used this same notation in part of their Autumn Country writing which is were I found the reference to it.

(I'm a little ashamed I didn't realize this sooner since I actual use the phrase "note to self:" rather often myself)

If the password follows Germain's system, I don't think it uses Finland ("fin") as the country. No luck using combinations with it.

Without additional info, "NTS" is immaterial. The partially encrypted letter from Allan said the site wasn't created for himself, so making a note to himself doesn't make sense other than as a way to throw uninvited guests offtrack. It may be a clue to someone he's worked with before as to which password format he used.

I think we need Royal Thames to rejoin the party.

Meta

That's good news.

As far as the interaction goes, pretty cool to have confirmation that we can influence the story and it's not scripted. They implied as much way back when, good to have it reaffirmed. Especially since it sounds like we'll be doing more than just telling a character to choose one or the other way of doing things.

It'll be something to remember as we continue to communicate with characters.

Quick rundown of the cast so far (as I remember them and with my biases thrown in):
Jeff Pike: Department of Interior employee. Lived in Allan Portman's old apartment. Received T. Petal's phone calls. Dead as a result.

Allan Portman: Polymath freelance reporter. Primary interest seemed to be covert government ops. Stumbled on Osprey and Fractal, two intelligence programs that seem to go against citizens' interests. Now dead.

John Green: former employee of OIS. Probably had something to do with JPike's death. Truly distasteful to work with. The backstory makes out like he's the bad guy. He was the most hostile towards us. But the fact that Germain's people say he was a late arrival in Casper makes me wonder. That seems to indicate he didn't kill Allan or order the murder. Perhaps a pipeline for us back to OIS if we ever need to go that route.

Petal/Thorn/RoyalThames: don't really know the motive for involvement. Unaffiliated with any group but an OIS(?) employee. Sought out Allan to try and share information about Osprey/Fractal. Least likely to have conflicts with our own interests.

Germain (also JJ and Tristan): Don't know much about their ulterior motives (AP called him ultra-libertarian). Certainly anti-government, and they've got some interesting training and resources available. Definitely seemed like they were concerned with more than just a government program run amok. Perhaps true revolutionaries. They were a nice source of info and set of allies while it lasted, but they made me a little uncomfortable.

Thalberg: OIS's recruit. We don't really know what the program's objectives are, so we don't really know his role. Seems to have been implanted with a subdermal listening device. Possibly inserted into Quantico (?) as a mole. We'll probably be tracking him down. "Why" and "What do we do once we find him" aren't at all clear. He's been reassigned to hunt us and RoyalThames. He was probably tracking Promis/Fractal and someone named Cornell, possibly a smuggler.

Saarinen: Thalberg's love interest. Or maybe a lead on Fractal/Promis. Does research at a university, probably in Finland.

Mike the Poet/raju runoilija: muscle referred to AP for contracting. Probably in Finland. Unconfirmed. Mentioned in the post at Autumn Cafe. Tied to Matius Wolf somehow. Probably doesn't know about Fractal or Osprey.

Matius Wolf: AP's contact. A "Lothario". Weird sense of humor (named muscle "the poet"). Out of touch.

Tall Guy: an AP contact in Oregon. Concerned with a New World Order conspiracy and something called "exigent tribunal".

Steve: no idea. An AP contact.

Cathy: An AP contact? An AP love interest? Used to date an LA councilman

Cornell: Art smuggler? Target of Osprey.

Since I had trouble remembering all that, I may read back through the back story and summarize what we've surmised about Osprey and Fractal. I don't think we ever collated that information.

Twitter this

5min ago on twitter.

royalthames I'll be damned.
royalthames Sometimes I really wish I had studied more languages in school.
royalthames Because I get the feeling that somewhere in a looooooong list of nonsense there were a couple words that pointed right to a warm drink...
royalthames on a cool October morning. Having now seen the mist-shrouded gardens of what is definitely not Giverney, it seems that we are once...
royalthames again at a half finished bridge over a wide chasm.
royalthames In short, I have no idea what that screen name means.
royalthames As a matter of fact, it seems so out of place with what little I know (knew) of him, that I am at a loss.
royalthames A couple thoughts, while I go wrack my over this new puzzle. 1) Is it possible that the image says something other than the obvious?
royalthames For that matter, is there a way to tell if the image came first, or if the name of the site came first? Or even if they are related (since..
royalthames they certainly appear to be). 2) The letter that provided this site was sent to someone. Has that someone been able to shed any...
royalthames light on this new mystery? That person (B) had to have been close enough to our friend (A) for A to have thought that B could figure...
royalthames this out. (Unless, of course, A planned to send some other type of key to B that would make all clear - but , if so, we will now...
royalthames never know it). 3) I thought I had a 3, but I'm stumped. Someone made a reference to the land of the Moomins, has that been confirmed?
royalthames If that is true, then the only thing that I feel is very likely, based on his demonstrated obsessions, is that the key is probably also...
royalthames in that language. Now I am going to go take a crash course is Tibetan mysticism in the hope that I might gain the power of perfect...
royalthames visualization, and remember something that might be of some use.
royalthames Before I go, I should mention that something strange has happened. I have still been getting occasional files, but...
royalthames the recent ones have had nothing to do with the previous ones (which were all about the same thing). I have no idea why this is, but...
royalthames there is nothing I can do about it either. (that probably sounds strange, but it is just a function of how that system appears to...
royalthames do its thing. I'll keep checking, though.

Did we tell RoyalThames about Germain specifically? That name might not mean anything to RT. And did we ever provide RT with the rest of Allan's effects?

Anyhow, I think RT is telling us that we need to desteg the image. Or otherwise manipulate it, either with software or conceptually, if that makes sense. That, and it seems like we have all the clues we should need for the solve. Which is a common theme dating back to the Purloined Letter references with all the clues being hidden in plain sight.

I'll see what I can do. No promises.

Update: I ran steg detection software and came up with nothing. Altering brightness and contrast on the image didn't show anything interesting. Inverting it didn't give me anything. I'm a complete novice at that, so I highly suggest someone else picks up this thread. Further update: Looks like a complete dead-end. Image is being served from the directory for that WordPress theme.

I'm gonna putter around with some searches on Finland, Hyvinkaa, NTS, and whatever else comes to mind, see if it sparks my noggin.

What did Allan do at SXSW in Austin? Because searching for NTS keeps popping up something called the Nordic Teletraffic Seminar which rotates among the Nordic countries, including Finland.

FYI: Finnish MySpace pages are just as bad as everyone else's. Ugh.

Some translations to play with:
Mist: sumentaa, utu
Fog: huuru
Steam: sumu, usva
Ruby: rubiini
Pebble: pikkukivi
Gem: jalokivi
Stone: kivinen

A battle of wits it is, then. Crap. Very Happy

Don't forget bridges, trees, rubies, stones, numbers, poetry, literature and dates. Razz On a more serious note, I think the digits on the business card might help us here, rather than after cracking the password. It could be a cipher...we should feed that to RoyalThames. I'd like to see what object he next chooses for self-inflicting blunt force head trauma.

I tried looking for landmarks in Finland that could be useful...cafes, bridges, things named mist...bupkus so far. "Cafe mist" is what sent me to a 21 year old Finnish girl's MySpace comments...yeah, best not ask. Did find Cafe Ballerina and Rolls in Hyvinkaa. Nothing helpful, tho.

My last attempt at something that included both the clues and our work product left off at 7/18. I think Coffee's ended around 7/20. I tried working forward from 7/18 incorporating both hints/solves and story...it's a daunting task. Coffee, if you'll compile the clues and solves since we left off, I'll create a separate reference for the story that you can host. I'll probably have something on Wednesday to that effect.

The numbers

I've thought a LOT about the string of numbers: 2764-5511-6406-8947
Being that they are in 4 character strings they don't seem to match most cypher schemes that Ive researched. Research on Finnish phone numbers and addresses showed that they aren't those.

At the moment the 16 character string has me stumped. I'm absolutely sure it translates to something, but as for what I don't know.

I can think of absolutely no reason why the numbers would be there except that they are code for something.
I've collaborated with a friend on constructing the front side of the business card that had the numbers and the best we can figure it said
Cafe
Specialty Coffee, Tea
Rose Water
????ler, A?

I've posted what information and links we have to RT on twitter. We'll see what comes of it.

Not that anyone is looking for the name RoyalThames or any of us yet, but I hope posting blatant clues to Twitter freaks RT out enough to pursue a better medium for communications, secure or otherwise. Smile

That's hoping for too much, I bet. RT did work through the last cipher solution on Twitter.
