What's with the name, James?

The name "James" means "the supplanter" or "one who replaces."

Kind of an unfortunate meaning for such a nice name. As if the person bearing the name had no purpose other than to replace someone or something... almost like a human placeholder...

Sir James Barrie, who created Peter Pan, was put in the sad position of trying to replace his older brother, David, who died when James was 6 years old. His mother took to her bed after the older boy died and James in a desperate attempt to make her happy, tried to replace his brother in her eyes by doing things he hoped would make it so he'd never have to grow up.

When he was born and his mother named him James, she couldn't have known her older boy was going to die... And that James would try to replace him... Odd the way some things have an almost greater cosmic significance to them.

But let me not ramble, here...

Both the names James and Jameson (the name of the man who bailed Jim out) mean the same thing:
"one who replaces."

Who do you think these two characters might be replacing and why?

Thoughts, anyone?

Oops!

The title was supposed to read: What's with the name, James?

I didn't know a mere apostrophe would give the darn form a little nervous breakdown! Embarassed

Sorry.
