[META]im receiving spamtexts and telemarketing calls after -
registering for the SMH game. anyone else?

i gave courtv my cell phone number when i registered for this game, and suddenly i am receiving spam text messages and one call from an 800 number. i normally NEVER receive any such texts or calls, so im almost certain its as a result of divulging my phone number to whoever is in charge of this game.

anyway, i was wondering if anyone else has experienced similar calls or texts. thanks

btw- on a side note, is it me and my pc, or is this forum loading super-slow today, and sometimes not at all?

The forums are slow today because the extra traffic from SaveMyHusband is stressing the server.

You can keep abreast of the site's status here. Smile

Please keep page refreshes to a minimum; it'll help. Thanks!

Spyware?

It sounds like you might have some sort of spyware or keylogger on your computer that captured your phone number as you entered it. My wife and I haven't had any sort of problems, nor have any of our friends doing the contest.

I would tell you how to check for and get rid of it, but I suspect that you already know.

thanks for the info guys. im sure its not spyware, i scan for those regularly using adaware, spybot, and the best scanner yet (though i only recently started using it), superantispyware, which found 20+regsitry items that the other 2 had missed. i highly recommend it for free spyware protection.

as far as the game, i never called andy's phone, nor did i sign up for texts and/or calls from christina. i did however, include my phone number when i registered for the game. silly me, i figured they would need my # in case i won the 25,000 grand. little did i know what was to become of the game.

funny thing is, i found this site when i was doing a legitimate search for info about "andrew goodis". at that point there was only an initial thread here (at page 2 of eventually 87), not a subsection for the SMH game. the whole thing was so fresh in fact that i was the 13th viewer of sonia's blog. anyway, that first night i found this site, the people here had already gotten to day 7 and were working on day 8.

in a way this site kind of stole the intrigue of the game for me, but thanks to this site i found that the game wasnt designed very well and a bit lame to be honest. so i didnt invest alot of time in the actual game because there wasnt really much there to figure out. i thought it would be a complex and realistic mystery, but it turned out to be pretty straightforward and more of a sweepstakes than an actual kidnapping mystery.

anyhow, as far as the spamtexts, the one i managed to save was from www/wishsoftware/com, and the phone call came from 800-310-5479 . i looked up that number and found this:

http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-800-310-5479

so i dont know if it is or isNt related to me registering for the game. the website that text me (wishsoftware) is really strange, cuz after checking their site, i found that they are in scotland. so why and or how they got my usa phone number is quite perplexing.

Confused

I received a mail from someone at AOL, and would have thought it only regular spam if I hadn't seen an earlier post from someone asking if anyone else had gotten unusal mail from someone at AOL. I also received something from someone asking me to call them immediately. The number started with 877 (the same as Andrew's cell started with) so I called wondering if it was IG and, of course, silly me!, it wasn't! Only someone trying to sell lists of names or something like that.

Sounds like someone's hacked the PM's site.

i hear ya vision. the thing is i wouldNt be very concerned if i was receiving spam email(s), but im alarmed that my cellphone number has been given out to retailers/spammers. of course i have no proof, just a suspicion, and thats why i wanted to check around to see if these phonetextmsgs were unqiue to me, or if others had received them as well.

for now i think i can rule out the call from the 800#, since it seems to come from verizon (my cell provider). but i have NEVER received any spam text msgs before, ever. verizon sends me a few account-related texts occasionally, and since they have my phone number, i dont freak out.

but when i see random oustiders suddenly reaching my cell phone, im worried about where they got my number, and who else now has access to that source. i rarely if ever give out my cell number anywhere, especially to businesses (i always use an outdated old landline number for retailers). so thats why im a bit mystified/intrigued, but also slightly preturbed.

Wink

NYwizrd- thats exactly what im worried about. i included personal info about myself when registering for this game, and i dont want that info floating around in an unprotected and unofficial cyberspace.

MY GUESS...

I think you all know what I'm going to say... Laughing

I would start with Deep Focus (the inept company that tried pulling off this scam of a "contest")! My guess is that they sold the list to offset Suzuki pulling out as a sponsor OR they got hacked because their server password was like the password to their 800-number mailbox (1234) and they just plain don't know what they are doing. Dunce Just my guess!
