Hi everyone,

Wow I really am surprised anyone remembers 'Syst3m.' It's always a great pleasure to receive complements about your work, so thanks!
Here a little run down on what happened since syst3m and a bit about my current projects:

Sysy3m and Arcana (The syst3m short film) were created for my final year project studying 'Time Based Media' BA, the project took over a year to develop (sept 2005– may 2006) and I had to jump through a lot of hoops to persuade university staff that ARG's are a new form of Time based media worth exploring!

During this time as well as creating the narrative and content I also had to back up this project with a dissertation and research folder exploring the potential of ARG's. Though a mammoth task I ploughed on and graduated in the summer 2006 with a first class degree.

At this time I planned to do a follow up to syst3m, taking up 'up a notch' as it were, using the skills I honed whilst creating and running syst3m…

….. Then I met Hazel Grain who had just stated a placement with HP to develop an 'online interactive narrative.' Hazel has a successful background as a film and animation director as well as her own production company (licorice films) so I was keen to work with her, when it became apparent that there would be funding available for me to work full time with her to develop what became 'Meigeist' I jumped at it! Only a month out of University and I was already being paid full time to create ARG's! So unfortunately 'Impact' was put on the backburner and production on Meigeist began.

Since Meigeist Hazel and I have been working on a new 'Proof of concept' game. Not an 'Alternative' reality game, but instead an 'Augmented' reality game. We are again developing this with support from HP, only this time using their 'Mediascape' technology. The game will feature two of our favourite characters from Meigeist and is called 'Timehole.' (Does that give it away? Rolling Eyes ) As I mentioned before this game is just a short proof of concept prototype and as such only takes around 30mins to play. It can be played anywhere in the world – the only requirements are a PDA with GPS. We will be releasing this game with in the next 6 weeks.

After this project Hazel and I will be going our own way for a while, she is involved in a very exciting new project I am not at liberty to write about! Whilst I am planning on researching a potential platform that crosses Augmented and Alternative reality games with a MMORPG format. –Think' World of Warcraft, on the street, with ARG elements.'…. Only much less naff then that makes it sound! Hopefully by the end of the year I'll have playable game ready to release and demonstrate to you all.

So, unfortunately the sequel to syst3m is still a while away, but I hope you'll agree these new forms are worth exploring whilst the medium is still young!

I forgot to add:
Here's a video that demonstrates the potential of HP's 'mediascape' technology in the next 3 to 5 years. I'm hoping to tie this type of augmented reality game to traditional ARG's…… what ever the result…. It's going to be fun!

Thanks for posting Jon, and please, definitely keep us informed; especially when it comes to Pat and Dave. Laughing

This is the most awesome news I've heard in a long time.

Jon, congratulations for single-handedly trying to reinvent the ARG!
Geocaching meets ARG meets MMORPG? I can't wait! Pat and Dave will live forever!

Wow...

You ask a simple question, and get a completely unexpected answer. Well then, I will have to wait and see what this 'reinvention' is all about. All I can say is that I am a big cyberpunk fan, so Syst3m really called out to me. Not to mention that it was the first ARG I was involved with since the beginning. It also had just the right amount of certain types of puzzles, and was well timed. Overall it was just really well put together. Ah well, I suppose as long as IMPACT is not cancelled altogether there is still hope.

"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Now THAT is a totally awesome concept, if this is the future of ARG's then where do I sign right now. If this were to tie in with the latest trends in ARGing of user generated community content then the potential to have longer term or even better self perpetuating ARG's could be on the cards. I like it, no I LOVE it!
