I don't know if it's Americans, or just the American government.

But, I agree, there are a lot of bible belt folks who cringe at the mention of anything of a sexual nature. But violence is acceptible.

You had it right there.
It's not being an American, it's not the government, It's religion. (specifically Christianity)

From what I understand, there's a much greater cultural acceptance of nudity and sexuality in other countries such as Italy (98% Catholic), Spain (99% Catholic), and Denmark (91% Protestant). The US, by contrast is 55% Protestant and 26% Catholic.

While conservative religious beliefs (and not just Christianity) tend to frown on public displays of a sexual nature, at this point it has moved beyond that in America and has embedded itself in our culture.

(for what it's worth, all figures taken from Wikipedia and are sourced to a CIA report)

"Game Theory" had a wonderful podcast episode last week dealing with sex, sexuality, and adult content in games, and the cultural response these games provoke among consumers and in the media. They also discuss current U.S. culture and how people in the U.S. can stand mind-numbing amounts of violence and death but lose their cool over Janet Jackson's nipple. You can find the episode here: Game Theory: Episode 12.

This doesn't really answer what the OP was asking about (games with adult/BDSM content), so my apologies, but I thought many of you would find it interesting.

Without even listening to the podcast I can say that there is a difference between what we choose to expose ourselves to (watching CSI, searching out violent videos on the internet or paying a cover charge to see people disrobe and dance on a stage) and what just happens to "pop out" at us (no pun intended).

The "popping out" incident was a very teeny part of the podcast discussion - the episode - the whole set of podcasts, actually - really is worth listening to!! Smile The Janet Jackson incident is mentioned as an example of the reactions, sometimes extreme, that can happen in the U.S. over something perceived to be "sexualized" (I'm being good and not getting on my soapbox here...).
