Harry Potter Hoping that we might need a place to discuss this final book, I started this thread. A note of caution, wikipedia has the full plot -pretty much blow by blow -up already. Funny note - it is tagged for being too long.
Anyway, if you don't want to be spoiled, avoid that article.
I'm still waiting for my copy to arrive today.

Did any one else go to a book shop at midnight dressed wizard or a witch or was it just me and my sad friends.
PS the last word in the book is
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Well

I didn't get dressed up but I went to a book store. I don't think getting dressed up is lame. It was the last chance to participate in a global experience with other readers. Also, I'm a big believer in doing activities like this with joy, exuberance and enthusiasm. Who cares what anyone else thinks. Fun stuff.

Well - I finished mine an hour or so ago and my girlfriend is currently reading the conclusion of her copy (we have to have separate ones after the dreadful goblet of fire incident) and it was quite a rollercoaster!
I think on the whole it was a fitting conclusion - though I'm still deliberating and digesting.

As my mom (still not 16 for a few more days--*sigh*) drove me and my siblings out to the store last night, I thought the same thing.
There was a big line (at least, for our little town) for the book, and at 12:01 there was an announcement over the loudspeaker that "Harry Potter Is Here!" Everyone cheered.
Although I didn't dress up, it was really cool to see all the people who did.
In the line waiting to get my book, I talked to a woman (probably about my parents' age) who was waiting to get the book. Although neither of us had gone to the midnight launch of Book 6, we both had to come to the launch of Book 7. After all, it was the last book. It was our last opportunity to do something like this.
After I got my copy, said hi to a few classmates I hadn't seen all summer, and paid for my book, I took a few moments just to look around. There were kids as young as 6 and adults as old as 60.
It was just... I dunno, it was just really neat. You could feel this sense of global community. (In a roundabout way, it reminded me of Unfiction.)
I'm really glad I went.

*konamouse worries about the time when unFiction folks might "dress up" as their favorite ARG characters at a ARGFest.......

I finished the book finally. All I can say is, you should read it. It is a great story.

Wow! If your mom is not 16 yet... how old are you?
Happy 16th B-day .

Ok, I finally finished reading it and my fear of checking this thread (though I know my friendly UFers would *never* spoil anything ) has dissipated. Woo!
I work at a B&N one day a week (after 5 days of sucky lab experiments that don't work, it's nice to be able to conquer the alphabet) and got scheduled to work our Midnight Madness party: 8pm - 3am (crikey.) We had scheduled a live band to play "Harry Potter Inspired" music (which I guess Pink Floyd "The Wall" counts as?), had some live owls somewhere in the bottom floor of the store (I kept wondering what giant owl poop looked like), and various Potter festivities scattered throughout. I myself was put on the Magical Potions and Apothecary booth, where I showed off my scientific prowess by mixing baking soda with vinegar and shooting plastic caps off of test tubes and making gooby gak out of Elmers and Borax (I smelled and looked remarkable after 3 hours of slowly coating myself with the mixtures.) Before midnight, they shipped all of us down to the registers, and I found myself the background subject of a number of "OMG I'VE GOT THE BOOK SQUEE" pictures.
I got home about 3:30am and crashed, and woke up around noon to the front desk of my apartment complex calling to let me know my Harry Potter had arrived (Home delivery is so fabby.)
And so yeah. That's my HP story.
Oh, and the book is great!

Wow, you people read really fast! The book is a very quick read though, a page turner and all.
My HP story is me and my girlfriend went to see a movie Friday night and we planned on going to Books-a-Million, but in the middle of the movie I realized I left my pre-order ticket at home! We ended up driving back home (about a 15-20 minute drive, twice). We arrived in time of course, but I was stressed that they wouldn't be open when we got there. They were of course, and I got my book. Happy me!
Glad to know there are other Harry Potter lovers out there! I'm glad to hear the people who read it enjoyed it as well. I'd read a review, but they're all spoilers...

I finished mine yesterday afternoon having read it for MANY hours on Sunday before (I think it was from about noon until midnight, not straight though, a few gaps) and would have finished it sooner if my girl friend's copy had turned up as she stole mine and read it first
Thought it was a great book, definitely a page turner and full of shocks (which I obviously won't mention here). What I will say though is that it is easily worth the money (especially if you got one of the copies from asda at £5 ) and I think its ashame that it had to end, it was such a great story, although I'm glad she didn't try dragging it out longer and longer just to milk it.

Also finished yesterday. My wife gets to read it first because she 'reads faster,' although she started Saturday it came out, and finished last Friday. I started Friday and finished yesterday. I think I won.
Great book, a fantastic read. I have favorite parts, but you'll have to pm me to see what they are; I don't want to spoil anything.
This is my crazy story:
We weren't going to buy it, but wait until we could borrow it from my mother (I'm 25 and live 5 states away, but would have waited). We didn't go to an opening, although there was an immense one in Poughkeepsie at a B&N (radio stations and everything). Went to bed Friday before midnight and slept a happy amount of hours.
We woke up Saturday to do some grocery shopping, and lo and behold, it was $10 off cover at Stop and Shop. We figured 'what the heck,' and bought it.
Of course, my mother, being the gracious woman she is, bought an extra copy without telling me and hand delivered it (five states away). We said we'd return ours and give her her money back, but she wouldn't hear of it, and told us to keep the money. I heart my mother.

My HP story is unremarkable except for the satisfaction of pulling one over on Amazon.com.
I pre-ordered the book and because I am cheap I opted for free shipping. This was months ago. As the release date crawled nearer, I was spammed by Amazon at least once a week (and towards the end almost daily) with Dire Warnings that I would not get my book the same day the Rest of the World did because I had not Upgraded my Shipping. C'est le guerre , I thought and shrugged it all off and was quite content in my mind with the idea of getting the book Monday, Tuesday or even Wednesday of the following week. It was the principle of the thing.
Saturday afternoon, IRC. Several folks in the chat room mentioned that they got their books, and I realized suddenly that I hadn't actually checked the mail yet. Yes, there it was. Despite the doom and gloom assurances from Amazon that I would not get my book, it was delivered along with all the other copies that had been purchased with "expedited" shipping. I WIN.

I was going to wait, wasn't in that big of a rush (I already read the wiki spoilers).
Then I was stuck at the airport for a few hours. Waundering around the terminal I walked through the newstand/bookstore and they had a whole box of them.
Sure, paid full price, but gave me something to read (since my computer doesn't have wireless).
I'm not sure when I'll finish it, though. Again, no big rush.
