No problem. The more coders here the better. I hope that once we break through server 1 on the halo3 site if I can finagle the access to attempt to grab the content behind the other servers, since it is all just xml data thrown into the action script on the page to dynamically load the multimedia files that are called.

Maybe if I can get the structure of the first servers xml, I can spoof a fake xml page, load it into the swf and then unlock the other servers, piecemeal.

(Sorry about all the technobable for those who don't know what I am talking about. Smile )

I hope they're smart enough to not put up the content for the other servers until they're ready to be shown. Unless we're supposed to break into them, of course.

You never know, it is worth a shot. They had the SOTA site up before we were supposed to find it. Very Happy

Well, yes that would work, but then again think about who we are dealing with. They wouldn't put all the xml data in and then simply lock it. Locks are meant to be broken, they know that pretty well. I don't think there is any data behind the servers right now.

They'll probably just replace the xml of the 5 locked servers with one unlocked, and then not even have the other 4's data on there. Too many risks in it getting gotted.

**EDIT** Hornet beat me to it.

Did anybody notice that Ambertshire is a fictional county? It says there that that happend in 1985 and the image name has kind of a date attached to it:

5th of may june 2007 ?

Ambertshire may be fictional; Ambershire (w/o the "t") is not. I'm chalking it up to a simple typo.

Also, did anybody out west try calling Avery at noon PST?

Well, I do not think that they will use one xml file for all of the servers to pull attrebute values from. Instead, they will use one xml file per server, so I might be able to figure out what the attribute values are for the other data behind the other servers and try to gain access to it through forcing my own xml file toward the other servers attrebute links. They might have the rest of the media up on the server, or they might not, but it is worth a try, and I will do it when the time comes. Very Happy

...wow that sounds like a really good idea.

You're more knowledgeable than I am about that stuff, I didn't even think about that.

Be sure to keep us updated when you try that.

Good idea, except for the fact that they are probably watching this forum, and now know what you're going to try. Smile

I actually thought that very same thing as I refreshed and saw your message Grifter_7.
Oh well, lurkers will be the death of us all. Laughing

I will still try it out. Since I do not want to do anything more invasive to the bungie servers. AR might come after me. Razz

has anyone looked up aaron elliot? according to the sota website, he is the membership chairman for their group; a google search finds quite a few peopl, ranging form web designers to a very old site that has pictures of his world travels. "A neighbor (Aaron Elliot, our current SOTA membership chairman) and I were talking..." is where aaron is mentioned.

edit: on a side note, when i looked at the counter on the SOTA site last night, it had a little over 9,000 hits, it is currently at just over 63,000 hits.

If they're at all smart, as mentioned above, they won't have any live information readily accessible over the net. If it's a matter of submitting the right link to some url, then whatever the value or link is, I would hope it would be one of countless options - security by obscurity. Like in Vanishing Point - no matter how much decompiling of the flash was done, there was absolutely no reference to the answer on our side. Only the server would verify a submitted text string to determine if it's the correct answer, then return the result. Even scripted actions to be taken on a correct answer shouldn't be coded into the browser side (flash, html source, etc) to retain full secrecy. Ideally, a 'successful' submission should also include the command for what to do or where to go next...

So first, above all, they shouldn't put the data live until it's meant to be found.

Second, there should be no links to stuff anywhere, unless the server verifies some submitted value and returns a success or failure.

In which case (I haven't looked at the flash source or xml myself yet), altering xml and submitting it thinking you'll get a link back will more than likely prove futile... but that's a worst (best?) case scenario.

But we'll see when the time comes how well they coded - so by all means, definitely go for it! Though it may be considered a minimalist form of brute forcing (skipping a task intended to be accomplished to reach the goal), it's all fair game if they don't think one step ahead of the hive mind Smile and heck, technically we did it already up to this point, getting so much info before its intended release...

/end of puzzle coding lecture
