[SPEC] Theory talk

Okay, shall we talk about what we're looking at, here?

IMO, the Society of the Ancients is a chump organization, a group of crystal-wavers who accidentally fell on something actually of worth. Their "web baloney" esque web page (straight from '94!) is part of that impression, and the other part is just the way they speak on that web site. Email links are broken, nothing's clearly explained...

They're in way over their heads.

I filled out the PDF found in an HTML comment that should be sent to doyougrok at societyoftheancients.com , and I sent it to that prefix at (ip address), and I haven't gotten a rejection notice yet.

Now, as for the countdown, who'd like to take a crack at translating the meaning there? System Bypass in Progress - is it saying it is hacking into this web site? Is it referring to another system entirely? And where is it heading in that bypass - communication with us? What is realigning, and why?

Spec time!

As mentioned earlier, the last picture in his portfolio, which is drastically different from his other head shots, is also the only one with an "Image Info" section in the upper right hand corner, which expands to "Hamasaki Ayumi knows whats up".

Per my base google searches, Hamasaki Ayumi is a Japanese Pop star.

Addendum: atdt1991, if you have been to Halo3.com of late, you will see a series of "Locked Servers" showing on the main page now. A member (I forgot who, but kudos to him/her) hypothesizes that once the countdown is complete, the first locked server, or maybe one of the other locked servers, will unlock and display whatever Multimedia message is imbedded in it(which was gleaned by yet another member breaking into an swf? file pulled off halo3.com)

Assuming the Transmission Log is some type of AI, one might assume it is AR, but then again AR seems to be simply gathering information and then hibernating, which would be a ways off from this thing. Interestingly enough it finishes on the Summer Solstice. Also there is a good chance it may be attempting to hack into the servers from Halo3.com

Might be worth searching for any references to whats up in her songs. Thats what I thought at first.

By the way here's the link for the SOTA membership: http://206.16.223.63/sota_images/SOTA_membership.pdf

EDIT: Any reason why www.societyoftheancients.com works, but not www.sota.com?

Obviously the ad in this weekend's paper should have led us to the halo3.com/comic page, ergo the Transmission Log page. Considering we found it early, it would appear that the PMs had to do update the site quickly and that may be why we found the Transmission Log before the SOTA page. Also, the SOTA evidence shows the same rock from the Halo3.com/comic, which follows the Africa theory. Hopefully the SOTA site is simply a launch pad to a better site (countdown maybe?), because if I have to look at those dumb shining stars for the next 4 months I'm gonna go crazy. Unless one of the AIs' hacks the SOTA stuff, I can't imagine it being update with much more than some info on the Transmission Log, and being used as a summary page. Most likely the Transmission Log/Countdown Page will be used for some puzzels as well as the halo 3 servers.

An interesting thought.

I think the thing that makes it interesting is not only the SOTA stuff (found a short while after the original .65, and the .63 bruteforce find) and that picture. Iris: with wings and the flower in the hand.... Makes it really enticing and a bit hard to deny.

On the other hand, if it is a fake, then great job at doing it.

EDIT: On second thought, the thing that I think clinches it for me is the SOTA stuff on the site, when we had to bruteforce our way into the .63 site.

The timing, and the picture, makes it a bit too coincidental to be a fake.

Then again, I may be wrong.

?

Ah, but I can find about 1000 similar photos from other users on myspace if you give me five minutes. Honestly, that 'look' is extremely popular with certain subsets of the under 30 group. As far as timing goes, when was this page discovered in relation to the .65 and .63 pages? Imposters popped up shortly after the first AR post on Bungie.net, and as I said above, this guy list web design as a skill in more then one place. If he is half as good as the guys that go to my college, I doubt it would take him more then 30 minutes to create the banner and the blog.

I could be wrong about all this, but my little voice is telling me to be skeptical.

A tracert on www.sota.com causes it to end with a "www.bestsoftware.com". MS probably could not get their hands on the domain. Or maybe they did?

Yeah, it's weird that one works but the other doesn't.

A web site is not configured at this address.

Standard error message or placeholder text?

I agree, why would M$ hire him then tell him to put up SOTA.com when there is nothing there?

Ayumi is an Idol, not a pop star, although as far as I am concerned, they are the same thing. Only posting the correction because I had this argument with a friend from Niihama just this afternoon.

The time is what'll make it obvious if this is a fake or not. Someone should go through the logs and see what time the .63 and .65 sites were discovered, and the subsequent discovery of the avery fane sites.

EDIT: Alright well here you go.

Per the post logs on this site,

.65 was first heard of at around 9:13 P.M.

.63 was first heard of at around 9:54 P.M.

Avery Fane's MySpace post was first found at around 10:23 P.M.

All times are CST.
