I've had a bit of an email conversation with Amy, telling her about my expeditions etc, but in all my adventuring I forgot to post them here Embarassed

So here they are in case they're of any help to anyone:
On Sunday I wrote:
Hi again.

I thought I'd send you a quick update on my progress.

I went up to Foyles yesterday with a friend, and we managed to find the Wind in the Willows in the Crime section. We also eventually found the copy of Wuthering Heights that had vanished - it was under relationships in the self-help books bit (basement, I think). We looked for the others that are mentioned on the back of the book jacket, and my friend did manage to find Pride & Prejudice too - it was in the politics section! Each book has nothing but a passage of text in, referring to another book. Have a look for yourself, you'll see what I mean - the Pride & Prejudice text refers to the Wind In The Willows, etc. I'm sure the others are in that shop somewhere, but I couldn't find them.

One thing I did notice was one or two refer to Ffforde, with an additional 3rd f in. I've contacted other people who are working on this as well, and between us we think there is an impostor trying to pass off their (decidedly inferior) work as the next Jasper Fforde book. We're still trying to work out how and why they're doing all this, and how to put a stop to it all.

I see you've managed to video Miss Havisham. I've not yet had a chance to watch it properly, but will do so as soon as I can.

I'll let you know when we make any more headway with this thing.

then Amy wrote:
Excellent work. I have been racing about all over the metropolis, planting letters for a difficult old woman from the 19th century. (She is a bit of a nightmare!)

We are trying to figure out what to do with all of this information. Why do you think there is a fraudulent Jasper Fforde? I am not very quick on the uptake, and I'm not sure I'd know anyway having not read any of his books - perhaps I should! What does this mean in relation to the vanishing books and if you are right, how do we find him? Clearly more heads are better than one! The stakes are getting higher and time is of the essence.

Thank you for your help, I've a feeling this is only the beginning,

yesterday I wrote:
A few weeks ago, I received an email about a Jasper Fforde quiz, claiming to be from someone called June Haversham. I sort of ignored it, until someone else who has been working on these mystery books mentioned it to me. The similarity between the names struck me as odd - Havisham vs. Haversham. She has apparently been receiving emails from a Jasper Ffforde, about a new book. Note the 3 fs again, just like in the book in Foyles. This Ffforde seems to somehow be harvesting literature to create their masterpiece. The major problem is that I'm certain it is not the real Jasper Fforde, and frankly their grammar etc. (from what we have learned so far about them) is appalling to say the least. I know my grammar may not be the best at times, but really! They sound like an overenthusiastic child.

I still haven't worked out how and why they are doing this, but will continue thinking about it all.

If you haven't read any of the books by (the real) Jasper Fforde, I'd certainly recommend them. I found them to be thoroughly entertaining, and in some respects quite educational (if you investigate all the different references contained in them). I'm sure you'll certainly find that they reveal a little more about the character of your new-found friend Miss Havisham!

Do please reassure her that people are trying to resolve these problems as soon as possible. I was back in London today, but failed to locate the remaining nine books in Foyles, although I believe some of my friends have worked out exactly which 12 books are involved. I also paid a quick visit to St Olave's Church, which has an interesting history including several literary connections, to see if there was anything about the place that would make Miss Havisham chose it as your meeting place. Alas, I found nothing that seemed significant.

today Amy wrote:
This is very interesting. Jasper Fforde keeps on being mentioned to me. I googled him earlier and came upon the quiz. Alas, I think it might be for people who know a little more than me about his books, but I've entered anyway! I'll try and get in touch with June too. If they're not connected, that's a rather Dickensian oddity nonetheless.

Someone emailed me with a full list of the books, most of which I had figured out but not all. The next, I guess, is trying to figure out where they all are...

(Did you like St Olave's? Thought it was a delightfully maccabre church - no wonder Havisham took a shine to it!)

More thoughts anon

And yes, if required I can go over to Reading later in the week and look at yet more books, though at the moment I must confess the idea does not fill me with joy! Shocked I think there are two branches of Waterstone's in Reading though - could someone who's been conversing with her try to find out which one it's likely to be?

Myf,

I've emailed her and asked if she knows which Reading Waterstones (but after 5 in UK now so may not expect an answer until tomorrow and office hours). She did say she would post on blog, so that may come later.

Meanwhile, Amy and June have connected:

http://junehaversham.wordpress.com/2007/06/26/an-email-from-amy/

I find this a strange line:

Quote:
oh, and my friend peter has stopped answering my emails, but that's not too strange because he is a Narcissus. > (

Googling [Peter, Narcissus] gets lots of strange connections, not sure if anyone relevant yet.

I also forgot to post the transcript of the video, so here it is. Bits in italics are spoken by Havisham, the rest is Amy.
Quote:
(Camera points at Havisham) Is this working? Where are they then?
They can see you but you can't see them.
Oh. How do I know if there are any men?
Um. Can you just start?
Brave respondent and loyal lovers of literature. You are called to combat a menace, an attack. At least, the signs are there for those, like me, trained to the highest degree by...
Um, can you just...can you just get on with it?
I am getting on with it. Don't interrupt. You put me off. Loyal lovers of literature...
You've done that bit.
All right! Listen, books are going missing. Books I thought I knew. I can't remember them any more. It's a sign.
Shouldn't you say who you are?
Oh, you're so clever why don't you do it?
Um
(camera points at Amy)
Hello, this is Amy Greenford. I work in Foyles Bookshop in London, and I witnessed a pair of people just appearing out of nowhere on the shop floor, and when I tried to talk to them, um...they ran away, and they were very strangely dressed.
Strangely? What do you mean strangely?
Er, and they ran away. And later I discovered that one of the people was...this is so peculiar...Miss Havisham.
...mean peculiar?
(camera points at Havisham)
Um, and Miss Havisham (camera moves back to Amy) asked me to look for a book, Wuthering Heights, and something had happened to it. (camera moves back to Havisham)
It has been erased, and it's not the only one. When someone...when a thief starts to strip a book for their own purposes, they can delete the ral book. He's starting with an old publisher, this, this, er...Dupine. It's one he can get to easily but he won't stop there. Soon he'll be on to Penguin, World Classics, it's literature he's after and he...and he's got 12 books already.
But who is he?
I don't know! I, I can't remember. It's not Compeyson.
Is that the man who was...?
That rogue.
(camera back on Amy)
If anyone has seen him or has heard anything about him...
(back to Havisham)
Cut off pantaloons. He wore cut off pantaloons.
What, you mean shorts?
We must stop him. Find out what he's after and why. We need agents, literary detective agents to track him down.
Tell them about the books
Yes, yes! The first two we have found already, in the bookshop called Follies.
Foyles!
The third: five sisters are universally acknowledged to be in want of something.
What's the title?
I don't know! You silly girl. That's the whole point. If I can remember the title then the book isn't under attack. The fourth: a woman wrote this modern Prometheus. The fifth: if you can't find this one, a croaking bird will be never more. The sixth: my home is one of those in danger.
That's easy! That must be Great Exp...
How do you know they're the kind of literary detectives we need if they can't work out a simple clue?
(Footage cuts to Havisham standing inside the church [Having been in the church, I can tell you the memorial she's standing in front of is one of two to Samuel Pepys])
The seventh: a portrait of depravity hidden in an attic. The eighth: a voyage to far off lands with little people, giants, and wise horses. The ninth: the River Thames and a trio of men (then something I can't make out, possibly with the word wolf)
I love that book!
They all betray you, even the funny ones. Especially the funny ones.
(cameras cuts to a closer shot, and she is now I think standing somewhere else in the church)
The tenth: this author's conception was interrupted by a question about winding the clock. The penultimate book: this unlikely detective was neither Wednesday nor Friday, but will he ever hunt down Sunday?
(cut to standing outside, in front of the main church sign)
And finally, time is running out so follow the rabbit or it's off with all our heads. Whatever you find out, send me word by the spider net. The girl here will report

(camera moves to Amy, then video ends)

Havisham mentions Compeyson, who she also referred to in one of her notes. From Wikipedia (about Havisham before the timeline of Great Expectations):
Quote:
Miss Havisham's mother died when she was just a baby, and her father, a wealthy brewer, spoiled her as a result. When he died, he left her most of his money.

As an adult, she fell in love with a man named Compeyson, who was only out to swindle her of her riches. Her cousin Matthew Pocket warned her to be careful, but she was too much in love to listen. At twenty minutes to nine on their wedding day, while she was dressing, Havisham received a letter from Compeyson and realized that he had defrauded her and she had been left at the altar.

Humiliated and heartbroken, Havisham had all the clocks stopped at the exact point in which she had learned of her betrayal. From that day on, she remained by herself in her decaying mansion, Satis House, never removing her wedding dress and only allowing a few people to see her.

more books in Foyles!!

Hi All,

I'm sorry to report that there are more books in Foyles! Agh! June just wrote me the following:

"There are 7 books in Foyles on Charing Cross road and I think one in another bookshop, I saved the list to the computer I was using this morning and someone else is on it now and he looks really busy, and he is always a grumpy! I don't know the titles off hand, I just noted down amounts, sorry."

Plus the ones in Reading, Cheltenham and Leeds. (or perhaps there are duplicates; I'm not sure). Anyway, we still need to find four more books in Foyles.

My eyes are crossing over in recollection of my last attempt. Ah well, I can pop down there again at lunch tomorrow.

Right, another London based Fforde lover here, ready to help. And, since I haven't had the pleasure of endless Foyles roaming, one who is raring to go. Sadly, their opening times and my employment mean I won't be able to do anything right now or indeed any time before about half six tomorrow evening. Anyone fancy joining me then? PM details if you want to meet up, act less suspisciously if you don't. I'll be the one either a) yelling "I've found it" at the top of my lungs or b) not. If any of the people nowhere near London have a pet theory they'd like investigated, let me know (I've already read the thread and noted down some suggestions).

Good luck! And I recommend the chocolate brownies Brownie in the cafe if you need a break.
Don't forget to take a camera to document your findings. You'll probably find the books in places that I stared at for ages

Any chance of getting a look at the pictures of the books and where they are in Foyles, out of curiosity. Can we put them here or somewhere like Flickr?

I too have received ffake Jasper's away message:
Quote:
Hello.

Jasper Ffforde the lovely much famous writer is From The Office Gone at the moment because he has gone to mountainous quiet to finish writing his beautiful book. It already has many of the greatest pages but he needs to be alone time to do the rest of those.

Jasper would very much so hope that you will be able to see and hear his new and wondermuch Thursday Next book be born in SWINDON on July 7th at a Secret Place.

Yours Goodbye

Jasper Ffforde (who is Gone)

Also, the following from June:
Quote:
Hello Sarah,

I hadn't thought about the invite! He didn't tell me where the secret location was when I asked, but perhaps it is also in Swindon? He did say he wanted people to go to the event, so he would have to tell me the location at some point so that everyone who has entered the competition can be sent their invitations.
But if he really isn't the real Jasper Fforde and I stop speaking to him, then we won't find out the location. Oh dear, this is all so confusing, I've been worrying about it so much that I haven't done any work yet today!
Yes, sending you the list of locations sounds like a good idea, off the tip of my head I can remember there is one in 'The Idle Hour' (I remember because the name is unusual for a shop) and one in Cheltenham, which remember because it is near Wales and I want to go Wales on holiday!
and a place beginning with an odd letter like Y or X.
I'll find the proper list and send it to you.

june

Now, there is a bookshop called 'The Idle Hour' in Leeds http://www.the-idle-hour.co.uk/ and I think Leeds was mentioned before, so maybe that's it? Also, Jasper did a talk there in July 2006, and will be there again on the 14th July so that is probably a good bet.

Running with that theme, Jasper has also done signings at Ottakars in Cheltenham, in 2006 and again on 11th July for the new book. The place beginning with Y is probably Yeovil, the Waterstones if we're going by Jasper's planned appearances.

I might be able to check out Cheltenham, but possibly not til the weekend. When it comes to Leeds and Somerset, someone else may have to oblidge!

Signings

Here is the list of Jasper Fforde's signings for the release of First Among Sequels.

It looks like we're on the right track - the books must be in the stores where signings are being held. Therefore, as June said that there is one in another bookstore in London, I'm ready to bet that it's Forbidden Planet in Shaftesbury Avenue. This is also close to my work, so I'm going to pop down there at lunchtime.

The others probably indicate which stores the other books are in - and whoever said Yeovil is likely to have been right, as there is certainly a signing there!

OK, that says the signing is at the Broad Street one in Reading. I'll try to get over there tomorrow or Friday and have a poke about.

Oh, and Flossj, have you considered registering here? We like new people, especially ones as helpful as you Very Happy

Forbidden Planet

Well, I've just returned from Forbidden Planet...and I've failed again. It might be worth having a think about the areas it might be in as it doesn't have your traditional book areas. I searched high and low in Sci-Fi (which takes up most of the real book section), and also looked pretty carefully in Romance (which was something like extraterrestrial romance, but wasn't), alternative histories, horror (got pretty excited when I found Frankestein and Edgar Allen Poe, but then realised I was looking in horror...nuf said) and that's about it.

They also have film and TV, heaps of manga / comics / graphic books (which I didn't look at), cult, buffy, terry pratchett, etc etc.

Myf, thanks for the invite! To be honest, I didn't even know these kind of sites existed - or these kind of 'games' to be honest! It would be nice if I could actually find something at some point though...

I'm kind of dreading a visit to Waterstone's in Reading. IIRC it's got two or three big floors full of books, and we still don't really have much clue of where some of these things are going to be. Oh well, nothing ventured etc, etc.

Just a thought - has anyone had the courage to ask the people behind the desk where the Dupine books are?

I haven't.
