Oh, and I'm all set for a trip to Cheltenham tomorrow. Smile

I've been not letting on that I know anything, although my comment in Book Ends was set up to see if they agree (that Brave New World has a happy ending -

it doesn't

Sarah B: & I thought you lived in Brum but you seem to have moved. *shrug*.

I'm probably going to look in Birmingham Waterstones, I guess.

Andy, I do live in Birmingham. Smile

<--- my location is a red herring, and an in-joke, all in one. Sadly, it's an in-joke with myself, which makes it a little pathetic, but never mind. Us academics have to get our laughs where we can! lol

I was also going to tackle the Birmingham Waterstones, on Sunday. You're welcome to try before me though, might save me a trip! It's a huge place, so if you don't find anything tomorrow then I'll just look again Sunday.

I look into the Google spreadsheet. Smile

I couldn't make it to Nottingham Waterstone's today - stupid work getting in the way again Razz - but will definitely go tomorrow.

In the meantime, I'm trying to complete the Classic Book Quiz that Mr Fforde, or is it Ffforde?, set us and I'm completely stuck on Q11 - the one about the occult researcher. Is there anyone who's got this and could give me a shove in the right direction? I've got all the others and am more than happy to trade answers with someone.

Still nothing new on the blogs. Good or bad sign?

I only wish I could join the bookhunt!

I've been all round Nottingham Waterstone's today and no joy Sad . Admittedly I was suffering from a severe case of book-blindness by the time I'd gone through all 4 floors so I might have missed it if it was towards the end but I hope not.

On the sort-of plus side, I did nearly bankrupt myself with all the lovely new books I just had to buy Embarassed , including a copy of The Annotated Alice in anticipation of Alice is Lost! starting. Still no luck on that occult researcher Classics Quiz question though, despite spending a good quarter of an hour staring at the Classics section in the vain hope of some inspiration Wink .

What are
(1) the scribbler lines
(2 the books & their misplacement
(3) the verses we find in them
supposed to tell us?

It's obviously about relations between books and other books, between books and their genres, between books and their identity. Are we supposed to deduce a certain tendency of change from the material we are gathering here? Or is there a key clue, a central and decisive verse hidden somewhere in one of the misplaced books?

I really wish I was living in the UK near one of those booksshops or libraries ...

I'm currently standing in Cheltenham Waterstones losing what's left of my sanity. No sign of the Dupine, though quite a few posters advertising the Fforde signing on the 11th. I'm highly disappointed! Sigh.

Occult Researcher

I've been lurking about somewhat timidly as to the fact that I have not done one of these before. I spent a couple of hours online trying to identify who the occult researcher is but I was SOL. I'm somewhat jealous that you guys over the pond get to do all of the running around but I'll try to help as I can. I'm also newly introduced to Fforde but now I'm pumped to read his books because they sound extremely interesting. Good work guys(and gals), and good luck.

Success! I've found Alice in Wonderland in the Cheltenham Waterstones. Smile

I'd actually given up and left, but my boyfriend wanted to go back to buy a book so I used the time to go back over a couple of places. I was convinced it should be in classics, but as I was staring at the shelves I realised no-one would shelve something like Alice here, it would be with the childrens books! So I went around to children's fairy tales and classics and sure enough, sitting on the shelf, there she was. I don't think I've ever been as excited about finding a book in my life! Smile

I'm still in Cheltenham at the moment, but I'll post up the photos as soon as I can. The verse was the Wind in the Willows one and there were no other pages with anything on.

Awesome : Very Happy Well done, miss Sarah!

That's 8 books found, 4 left?

Great Expectations, Three Men in a Boat, The Man Who Was Thursday and Frankenstein are still out there, and apparently two of them are still in Foyles.

Anyone good to re-check London?

Well, I'm home now after my somewhat lengthy trek round southern England. I don't know if I'm really unlucky with this, and most of the places I can get to don't have these wretched things, or if I'm just lousy at spotting them. Either way, my eyes are boggled now after driving on lots of motorway and staring at two shops full of books! I think I'm going to be spending the rest of the day looking something like this: Shocked

Oh well, an expedition to High Wycombe tomorrow afternoon should just about finish me off.

As for the places where apparently none of can explore, maybe we could enlist a few people on the quiet from the Fforde fforum? I think it's the only way we're going to cover places like Whitby, as they seem too far away for any of us to get to.

Looking in Whitby

I found this site a few days ago via June's blog about Amy.

I saw that you need someone to go to Whitby. I'm not too far from there and should be able to make the trip on Monday. I've been to the bookshop a few times before and it isn't that large, so hopefully I'll find something...
