edit Just one last thing but going over the Amy Greenford blog and found the post about the footnotes (http://amygreenford.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html) . At the end of the article she starts to use a high score 1 for things like didn't. For example didn 1 t. There are 4 1's by my count. I will chase this up.

These look like references to foot notes to me. Perhaps there is a clue in the first foot note in the Next among sequels book.

I interprete these footnote signs as a misconnected footnoterphone line. Has someone been trying to contact her without her noticing it?

It's a pity that I won't be able to participate in the big final hunt on Saturday. I have tried to mobilise my sister, who is attending a seminar in Oxford right now, but her schedule is packed. Pitypitypity ... All I can do is to agree with Gupfee and ask you lucky Swindon Event Adventurers to report as detailedly and take as many pictures as you can!

Have all the minor characters from the books you have found been identified by now? (Consequence: New Dupine books must be found before we can finish this stage?)

I love the wristbands! Smile

The youtube made me laugh. How evil villian of him! Laughing

I'm a little concerned about these Dupines. If they haven't got out to all the stores yet, how are we supposed to find them?

Also, I think someone is going to need to read First Among Sequels to find that 'place'. Amy's latest blog makes it sound like it's in the new book, not the draft copy. Which is a shame, because I was really hoping that there would be something in those 49 pages, since we keep hearing so much about page 49. Still, I think I've exahusted every varient of Summer Lightning and Blandings Castle, so maybe I'm wrong. What's on page 49 of First Among Sequels? I was standing by them yesterday in New Street but I didn't buy it because I wanted to get one on Saturday... *sigh* *kicks self*

I noticed these and asked Amy about them. She said she talked to Miss Havisham about them and Miss Havisham believes that it is a footnoterphone but the fffake Fforde is somehow blocking it from connecting. It may be that the person/people trying to get through are some of the missing minor characters.

Not all, because we didn't understand the significance of the extracts in the first few books so we didn't always look for or record them. As it stands Amy has confirmed that I was right about the following:

The Raven - Pauline Dubourg, the laundress from The Murders in the Rue Morgue
Wind in the Willows - Little Portly, the otter
Gulliver's Travels - Alexander the Great
Great Expectations - Georgiana, Mr Pocket's cousin
The Man Who Was Thursday - The Innkeeper

but I was wrong about her cat visitor being from Alice in Wonderland (in hindsight this was obvious - he's definitely not smilng). I'm now pretty convinced that the cat is from:

Three Men in a Boat - the black Tom which Montmorency regrets picking a fight with. He's described as "disreputable-looking cat. It had lost half its tail, one of its ears, and a fairly appreciable proportion of its nose.". In the photo Amy took of the cat he definitely has part of his ear missing and his attack on her cushions could well be described as "disreputable".

In which case we are still missing the characters from Alice in Wonderland, Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, Dorian Gray, Tristram Shandy and Pride and Prejudice. Some of these have already been found and will need to be checked again, others we're still looking for. It would help if Amy or June could narrow down the list of places to search a bit.

If anyone wants to join him for drinks, The Beehive is a pub in Swindon. Their website is here.

I'm certain that some of the books I found didn't have those extra lines about a minor character. If some of these Dupine editions haven't yet reached their destinations, we could be scuppered. I'm planning to have another go at Wokingham Library today, in the hope that whatever it is will have turned up by now.

Those wristbands are rather fun.

I sent off my Scribbler last night, and received the email from Ffforde with the invite attached.

Does anyone who's going have a video camera they could take? I'll have a digital camera with me, but I'm not sure how good it is as a video.

Another visit to Foyle's seems most promising - at least three of the books for which we are still missing our "minor characters" have been discovered there:

Three Men in a Boat - not found yet - [Character: Black Tom???]
Alice in Wonderland - Cheltenham, Waterstone's (Location: Fairy Tales and Children's Classics)
Frankenstein - not found yet -
Wuthering Heights - London, Foyle's (Location: Self-help)
Dorian Gray - London, Foyle's (Location: Art history)
Tristram Shandy - Leeds, The Idle Hour
Pride and Prejudice - London, Foyle's (Location: Politics)

Has anyone had a look at Unamuno's Niebla in the meantime?

I feel ready and equipped to shoulder this terrible burden. Just for your and Amy's sake...

This are notes from the book itself, although probably spoiler free. I've not finished chapter 1 yet, so I can't spoil much, but may spoil other bits of the series.

I had a brief peek at page 49 and couldn't see anything notably out of place or mentioned, but I didn't look too closely.

At the start of the book, in the Same Author section, The Samuel Pepys Fiasco is on the list of Fforde books, but crossed out and marked as "discontinued". In the first chapter, Thursday talks about how her adventures have been novelised, but as a form of gritty, smutty violent detective crud. it states five books, two sharing the names of real Fforde books (Eyre Affair and Well of Lost Plots) with hints that Samuel Pepys Fiasco is the fourth.

I believe (writing this at work, so can't check) SPF is the exception to the gritty smut thing, which means that in some odd way, SPF in the books is stealing it from the real world(?)

Hmmm, this is probably meaningful somehow. I'll have another check soon.

I'm just busy squeeing at Thursday entering her own stories.

The copy of Tristram Shandy in The Idle Hour in Leeds only had the rhyme in it. It was the same rhyme as the one in Great Expectations also at The Idle Hour. No other text at all relating to a minor character. Tristram Shandy was a hardback and Great Expectations was a softback. Any significance do you think? Probably not.

I was also wondering about whether page 49 had any significance. The only thing I could come up with is that the launch date is the 7th of the 7th and 7 x 7 is 49. I don't know whether there is anything in that. Again, probably not.

Do I remember another copy of Tristram Shandy being found elsewhere?

Yeah, I found a Tristram Shandy in Reading last week. I looked through the entire thing twice, but there was only the passage referring to Wind In The Willows. No extra pages with bits from Tristram Shandy at all.

Does this mean that not only do we still have to find the remaining Dupine books, we actually have to find specific copies in order to find the characters? Shocked

I wonder if it's worth dropping a line to Amy to see whether she could subtley give us any more hints as to which bookshops to search. Or is June in charge of this bit? I'm getting a bit confused Confused .

Since it's Amy who is in contact with Havisham, I'd try her first ...

Maybe we could try being a bit sneaky and phoning (or emailing) the places that are meant to have them. If they say they've got one, we could ask them what the pages say. If they haven't got one, then there's nowt much we can do.

It's got to be easier than trying to get people to go to all these bloomin' places.

That cat didn't look terribly friendly and talkative though!

Quick message from me on my mobile. There was no other page in the Alice copy in Cheltenham. I checked and my boyfriend double checked!
