Just emailed Amy, to see if Havisham happened to remember the keyword, seeing as she freed Ffforde the first time, she must have worked it out somehow...

Have to wait and see if she replies, until then - any idea where to look? Or what thraldom means ??

From Websters:

Quote:
Thraldom \Thral"dom\, n. [Icel. ?r[ae]ld[=o]mr. See Thrall,
and -dom.]
The condition of a thrall; slavery; bondage; state of
servitude. [Written also thralldom.]

Women are born to thraldom and penance And to be under
man's governance.
--Chaucer.

He shall rule, and she in thraldom live. --Dryden.

Seems appropriate! Not happy about the women in servitude bit though Razz

thrall (thrôl)
n.
1.
a. One, such as a slave or serf, who is held in bondage.
b. One who is intellectually or morally enslaved.
2. Servitude; bondage: "a people in thrall to the miracles of commerce" Lewis H. Lapham.
tr.v. thralled, thrall·ing, thralls Archaic
To enslave.
[Middle English, from Old English thrl, from Old Norse thrll.]
thralldom, thraldom n.

So I wonder if the keyword might be emancipation or something like that.

No, sound's like Wickham resp. Lydia. Wrong Austen novel ... Wink
(Wrong character, anyway. It's clearly Mrs. Philips or however she is spelled!)

Silly me. Of course it is Wickaham! (I knew it started with a "W" anyway...)

Regarding the key, I looked back at Amy's blog and she said:
Quote:
Apparently these characters are all so terrified of him coming back to destroy them if he twigs they could be a danger to him, that theyıve gone into hiding in fiction. They will only agree to talk over the footnoterphone. Miss H says she can think of a way to get this routed to phone boxes. As long as we do it at the last minute, the fake Fforde wonıt be able to trace them until itıs too late. The cat (a precocious bastard) says heıs not afraid of anyone. As some kind of proof of this he shredded my favourite cushion.

So, it looks like getting the key is what you guys will be doing tomorrow. Sounds to me like you'll be going around answering calls in phone boxes and speaking to these minor characters. You'll have June, Amy and Havisham (and perhaps the cat?) with you, and I'm sure one of them will know what to do with the key once you have it.

Sadly, I have looked at the timetable and I would have to spend 10 hours on the train for 2 hours in Swindon. DRATS! I wish I could make it and I hope that someone will come back and document what happens...

That must be it, Etta. I am sure you must be right, especially since Amy has asked for everyone's telephone numbers in her latest mail.
Promise to document the event, all ye Swindon-Goers and Wristband-Wearers!!!

So, is there anything else to work on tonight, is it all up to those lucky few who can make it to Swindon tomorrow?

(I'm still halfway tempted to hop on the train...but alas, I really don't think it is going to happen. Crying or Very sad )

I'm going too, with digital camera in tow. I believe Myf and Sarah B will also be there so we'll all make sure we document the day for those of you who miss out.

Etta, where do you live? I'm driving down from Nottinghamshire tomorrow. If you could get to Newark or Nottingham then I could give you a lift the rest of the way. Is that any use to you?

Come to sunny Swindon, in wonderful Wessex - experience the delights of navigating the Magic Roundabout (if you come by train, I'll give folks a lift so they can see it!), see the croquet stadium, erm.............. I can't quite remember where the site of St Zvlkx's cathedral is, but I do know where to find the Church of the Blessed Lady of the Lobster Very Happy You might even see the Tower of Brunel, and the Double Helix of Carfax - I think that's actually very close to the site of Ffforde's launch.

Maybe we ought to coordinate so we don't end up with 10 copies of Pride and Prejudice and nothing else! Laughing

I've got paperbacks of Pride and Prejudice, Frankenstein, Alice in Wonderland, Wuthering Heights and a very ancient Picture of Dorian Gray and hardbacks of Great Expectations and Wind in the Willows. I was thinking of bringing a couple of them - not all, I'll break my back Shocked .

Aha! This was given to me at a previous signing:

I'll be there a bit early. If you see someone in a Shakespeare t-shirt, pop over and say hello.

Please forgive me if I'm being dense, but... why are we bringing books?
