Nice analogy! My girlfriend does that to me every saturday. Its become our routine. Razz

But seriously, if in fact the entity is Gravemind, then what exactly can we do to thwart a threat that seems to be too far from Earth to do anything anyway? Is Gravemind a threat at all?

P.S. as some people have stated if it was gravemind and AR is/part of forerunner AI then he would be going crazy right now trying his best to stop it or fire a halo.

Not if that is not his protocol. If he is an Ark AI, then he might not have any protocols for firing the halos at all.

Nope. Monitors can't initiate the firing sequence. The Reclaimer and the Index are required.

Not to mention that if AR is to provide assistance to us, it would be detrimental for it to mark itself as a threat to this new entity. It has to be discrete.

Also, i really havent seen any good arguments made for the entity being gravemind. The only one is that its "alive" therefore gravemind. Personally i dont think it holds up considering that gravemind is on the delta halo, well i am assuming that he is on the delta halo since we havent seen a single sign of the flood in the nearby space.

Here's some good arguments (in my opinion):

It's old, and it's malicious. The only enemy we know the Forerunners had is the Flood. They devoted considerable resources into trying to eradicate it to the point of wiping clean the galaxy.

We don't know that AR is Forerunner, but at this point we can assume it since no other explanation for the presence of an advanced AI existing in our time has been given, and we know the game is pushing us to believe that "Ancients" have lived here on Earth and helped humanity in the past by giving us technological advances. This would lend credence to the fact that AR is Forerunner and attempting to help us.

Gravemind appears to be a hive mind for the seemingly mindless Flood, connecting all Flood through a telepathic connection. This is based on hints given in the Halo games and books (and indeed, even his name hints at this). He also seems malicious, in that the Flood only want to consume all living organisms. He may have helped to destroy the Prophets and their religious Covenant, but that was only for self preservation to prevent activation of the rings.

I don't believe Gravemind is limited by his corporeal body, but instead manifests himself wherever the Flood can be found. This is based completely on speculation, but there have been hints to this in the game as well. He also seems to have the ability to interface with technology, including taking over Penitent Tangent and using the technology of Delta Halo. The Halo 3 trailer seems to suggest he may have also taken control of Cortana.

I think it's quite logical to believe that the entity attacking AR could in fact be Gravemind.

I am in agreement with Falagard2 on the Gravemind theory. It makes a lot of sense and the spec has good reasoning and facts to back it up.

But I regress, what does Gravemind hope to accomplish by communicating and hacking AR in our time? Is there supposed to be a pivotal point in human history at this time that could affect our future?

Looks like we're going to find out soon enough. Cool

Perhaps Gravemind is trying to trigger or prevent a release of new technology to the human race. SOTA believes that the Ancients are responsible for technological jumps throughout history, and perhaps this is potentially going to be one of those jumps.

Yup. Xbox 360 is the jump. Xbox 360 connected with the Halo 3 Zune turns into an interplanetary drive system fueled by the incoherent cursing of 12 year olds over Xbox live.

I just can't picture the Gravemind being the entity that feeds us clues and is the instrument of our learning from this ARG. Sorry if I'm thinking a little outside the universe at the moment but remember that this is a learning experience by all accounts.

Of course, I suppose it could be a false-prophet situation; perhaps he tries to entice us into disabling the Ark, or using Forerunner technology to allow him to escape.

But even this line of thought makes me wonder--if the Gravemind is around 500 years before canon events, wouldn't that mean that the Delta Halo fight never ended? That for whatever reason, the Flood had already generated self-sustaining mass on that Ring and had spent the intervening years assaulting it? (Consider just how badly destroyed the Quarantine Zone was. Parts of it were completely and utterly slagged!) Perhaps the situation on Delta Halo was the original outbreak that removed the Forerunner from the playing field? Remember we haven't once heard that the Halos kill the Flood directly--it is likely they aren't affected by them.

From this perspective (and only this one as far as I can see) the Gravemind idea makes sense. Since the Gravemind is even now attacking vital Ring systems, (and we know it eventually claims their monitor), it would make sense for it to surf the Forerunner internet as a biological AI, encountering the processes governing Earth's Ark in the process.

AR is the only entity we've been contacted by. Just because this new entity is in play, doesn't mean we will assist it. We might be meant to thwart it. And AR might not be finished just yet. Whatever his "legacy" is, and whoever he will contact, might lead us to out next destination.

Still cant agree with the gravemind explanation. For one thing, there are probably some physical fail safes that gravemind wouldn't be able to overcome all the way from the delta halo and there is no sign that he is anywhere else.

All the posts made by AR make it seem that this is an unknown entity of questionable intent that has been around for a rather long period of time and has just now awoken once again.

To me it seems that linking all the vague messages to gravemind forget that its main goal is the spread of the flood. Honestly all those signs pointing to gravemind that are too much of a coincidence are to vague to be considered clear proof. Personally i still think its going to be something else other then gravemind. Well maybe we will find out tonight.

It would be great of at the end of the countdown the page just showed a flood army and said "You are dead! The Flood ate your brains!!"

But I really think that it just might unlock server 1 on halo3.com
