Hmm. Whether the flood were created or just found and imprisoned by the forerunner is a good question. If the flood were indeed created and then inadvertently unleashed upon the universe, the forerunner would have pretty bloody hands, having to use the halos to contain their mistake.

If you follow that train of thought, then couldn't the Iris simply be a Forerunner AI, as we originally thought? Supposed AR is just a small program meant to monitor things while the Ark is dormant. He's developed a fondness for humans, having watched them grow on Earth. But now Iris, the real AI of the Ark is awakening and when it sees that the flood have been let loose, it's going to activate the Halos (again) to stop them. Thus, AR is trying to warn us, but it's pretty hopeless for him, since Iris outranks him.

Maybe AR became rampant from the forerunners purpose of him, but to us, his rampancy is seen in a good light, as he is trying to aid us against something. What, we do not know yet.

Even ARs name signifies he is a part of a ranked system, as Adjutant means the aid to a commanding officer in its military meaning.
And reflex means just that, a reflex, so it seems as if AR is a subroutine to a larger AI and he just became rampant from the commanding AI.

These latest messages do seem familiar:

Reversed Message

Quote:

...I have walked among men and angels for three thousand years. Time has no end... no beginning... no purpose.

I wander the earth, seeking forgiveness for my horrible crimes against God and man.

I live to see death, destruction, over the light, but the light cannot be extinguished.

I live in a prison of my own demise.

I am lost in time...

I'm seeing repeat information. Can we pick a thread for today's goodies and consolidate?

First thing to do is check for the latest UPDATE thread, and if the discussion isn't related, then find the next thread for the topic you're looking for. Problem is, there are a few theories and discussions going on, so it's kind of a lesser of two evils... have a couple of long threads with duplicate comments because people don't read the rest of it, or split it into their own discussions and direct people to the right threads. The latter is easier for reducing the noise level... and it gets people used to it for when there will be (bold statement there) numerous topics, puzzles, and discussions going on... just bookmark the parent forum and look for the recent UPDATE and most active threads Wink

OTOH If you're looking for compiled summaries of events to date and such, you could check the wiki or other blogs

I speculated that AR's enemy is Durandal, pasted post here from wrong thread:

Quote:

There is no evidence that is Durandal. AR is pulling nearly exact verbiage from Gravemind text - almost quoting him verbatim - yet we're ignoring it. Why?

He is? What quotes?

No one is ignoring Gravemind, I recently posted that it probably is Gravemind. However, it is AR's recent and repetitive usage of "outrank" that makes me think that whatever it is he is fighting is actually part of the same group that AR belongs to (possibly just Forerunner in general).

This doesn't rule out Gravemind necessarily either, but if it were the case, Gravemind himself would have to be Forerunner (again, if AR's statements of "rank" indicate they are both from the same society or caste).

And so here's comes the crazy speculation:

There is no direct link to Durandal, only I think further hints that what AR is fighting is actually an AI who is malicious and evil (I jump to the AI conclusion based on the use of "rank"). We haven't met any evil AI in the Halo universe, although there has been mention of Covenant AI directly in the Halo game. Anyone know exactly what Cortana says when she mentions something else prying around in the system - she believes it to be Covenant?

Anyhow, the only evil AI we've met from Bungie is in the Marathon universe, which is loosely tied to the Halo universe in a few ways. The use of Mjolnir armor, and the various uses of the Marathon symbol in places in the game.

Also, recently leaked Halo 3 achievements show:

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/achievements.php?gameID=274

Halo 3 spoiler:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
We'll be accessing terminals in Halo 3, like Marathon. The achievement is called "Marathon Man" for finding all terminals in the game, and the icon for the achievement has the Marathon symbol

I'm no longer convinced it's Gravemind due to AR's latest post, but I am certain there is a connection of some kind.

One of many very interesting similarities.

It's too close for me to dismiss and yet, the new entity is now being described by AR as "machine." I'm sure there's more to come.

Tell them I am failing. And that he is stronger. Tell them that security cannot be guaranteed.

Tell them that there is little time.

And that I am crumbling.

Tell us something we DON'T know.

Not just that, but apparently he's also an old friend of AR's. Can we PLEASE put the Gravemind/Cortana spec to bed now?

even the phrase "a better machine" can still be metaphorical. a spartan could be considered a machine but is human. Machine can refer to power or systematic mythology.

I still like my spec about AR being a subAI of a larger AI and AR going rampant and warning humanity about the impending actions of the larger AI.

He is a machine.

Three definitions of machine that are of interest.

1. An organized group of people whose members are or appear to be under the control of one or more leaders:
2. An intricate natural system or organism, such as the human body.
3. A person who acts in a rigid, mechanical, or unconscious manner.

Does anyone know what Foman's message to AR was that resulted in the 3rd PM?

If you're referring to how SP split off from Melissa/Durga during ILB because of rampancy, that was JUST after the 7 year limit before a HUMAN AI begins to go rampant. Assuming this is a Forerunner AI and/or it's in the Ark, it's been around a hell of a lot longer than 7+ years. If it was rampant, it'd be Waaaay far gone by now. I'd assume Forerunners, with their superior tech would have found a way around the rampancy problem.

I'm not convinced they have. The monitors don't seem as independent as Cortana or Melissa. It's entirely possible that they're just "dumb" AI's. Could it be possible that a Forrunner AI could go into hibernation periodically to restrict their growth?

Edit: clarified point slightly.
