I find it a little strange that both of them (AR and whoever is controlling him now) have used quotes from Macbeth. Is it possible that something in that play is connected? Cause, what are the chances that AR would quote Macbeth, and then when it controlled by someone else, quote the exact same piece of literature.

It looks like the controller of AR has access to all his memory. Since AR must have been able to hold thousands of pieces of literature, I doubt its just a coincidence. But this is entirely speculation.

Interesting to note AR is saying that "The stain on his hands will not wash.", not AR's. It's a bit of a stretch to rationalize what we've seen of Gravemind feeling guilt.

Perhaps a rampant Forerunner AI not unlike Guilty Spark or Penitent Tangent?

But in the next few lines, AR went on to say that "he" didn't feel guilt at all (despite the stain on "his" hands).

So, not so much a stretch for Gravemind.

That's true, though it doesn't rule out AR feeling guilt for this other entity--a conclusion that fits with the notion that AR is a smaller part of a larger system, one responsible for something reproachable.

And while I'm pointing my speculation away from Gravemind, I do feel it's tough to walk away from its (his?) involvement in this. After all, there couldn't be many sentient things floating around after the rings fired 100,00 years ago.

Maybe I'm behind on my halo canon, but do we know that the rings were ever fired? I don't recall ever hearing any confirmation of them actually firing.

GS makes mention in the original Halo as to the Reclaimer already being there once before and firing the rings. I'm thinking there are other references, but that's the one that sticks in my mind.

Penitent Tangent also mentions in Halo 2 that the installation has had trillions of test firings "and one actual."

Right. I was just fixing to edit my post Smile

Someone just reminded me about Penitant Tangent mentioning that.

The Halos remind me of The Death Star.

According to Elliot, the central theme is "wicked intention must in the end produce wicked action unless it is not merely revoked by the protagonist's better feelings, but entirely eradicated by his inmost will, aided by Divine grace."

But Lady Macbeth's character theme may be summed by her quest for power, her role in murder, and the subsequent guilt that drives her to insanity.

The end result is

suicide
I realize that the time limitation for Shakespeare spoilers are up, but I can't bear to ruin such a great work for anyone. Wink

Forgive me for my insanity. I know this is a FAR reach, but I have time on my hands so why not do some specing?

Now to elaborate more on my hastily posted theory from last night. Sorry for the repost of some of the same information from my previous post. It is crucial to make clear my reasoning.

AR wrote:

An older life is here with us. He is not as helpful as I. His motives are oblique and his alliances opaque.
He plays with time even as he hides in its folds.
He outranks me and anyway, is stronger.
I can't prevail.
I will seek one of you out and leave my legacy in a small space

AR wrote:

That damned spot as old as rock and time.
What has he learned in Eon's slumber?
I doubt it's mercy or sorrow.
I am diminished.
Outranked.

The lines from AR in bold strike me as having dual meanings which contribute to each other.

Definition of Eon wrote:
:
1. the longest division of geological time
2. an immeasurably long period of time; "oh, that happened eons ago"
3. (Gnosticism) a divine power or nature emanating from the Supreme Being and playing various roles in the operation of the universe

In this instance, I am referring to Eon as a measure of time, though the third definition is very, very interesting.
Thus, He plays with time even as he hides in its folds.
would mean, he hides inside the folds of Eons.
If you fold the word Elgon (the location of the coordinates from the Transmissions Log), into three parts (E - lg - on) and then fold the parts together so that the lg are in the fold, you get Eon.
I read this to mean quiet literally he is hiding inside Elgon.

That brings us to What has he learned in Eon's slumber? .
If he is hiding inside of Eons (Elgon), then that would mean that he has been inside of Elgon (the location, not the word) since it last became active (I.E. - Elgon has been sleeping since it was last active, - since the Ark was last used.)

Therefore, I do not think that it means "what has he learned in a long period of time", but rather that it means "What has he learned inside of Elgon since it was last active?"

I hope this clears up my theory and makes it more plausible.
