 [OT] - Forum Additive!
A godsend for Firefox users...

As the Iris ARG expands in scope, it becomes more and more difficult to stay on top of the latest information. Sure, IRC's nice for real-time discussion, but for lengthy analyses, one must resort to keeping tabs on dozens of multi-page threads.

Well, for you Firefox users out there, I've found a great tool for doing this in the background as you surf: the Forum Additive extension.

Once installed, all you have to do is double-click on the title of a thread in the index, and FA will automatically add it to its list. Whenever someone replies to that thread, you can be notified with a chime, a small pop-up (with a link to the latest reply), or both. You can also configure it to ignore any posts you make.

If you're away for awhile and multiple messages are posted, the extension will leave an icon in your status bar. Double-click it and a list of all monitored threads will appear. Those with new replies will be marked with a green circle; click on the thread title and you'll be taken to the first unread post. And if things get too hectic, you can always deactivate the alerts.

This is the perfect ARG tool on two counts -- when things get more fast-paced, it lets you keep track of multiple discussions in real time. It also makes it a lot easier to catch up with any discussion missed while you're away. It's certainly made it easier for me to participate.

THAT... is a wonderful little doohickey.

I wish I could feasibly get away with using it at work. Smile

A good tool, having a bit of trouble configuring it to my nefarious purposes.

I just have the forum's rss feed fed into my feed reader. Granted the current forum's rss format strips pretty much all but text links; and you get every post made in the entire forum (though at the moment it's not as busy as you'd think); but it definitely helps keep up to date with the latest posts as they happen.

I had to look it up too Smile the default (afaik) for phpbb is:
http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/rss.php?f=0&r=1&c=15

apparently the max posts returned is 15 as well, so I have my reader set to refresh at 10 minutes.

There's also an Iris-only feed here: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/rss.php?f=224

You can configure a number of options for the RSS feed by browsing to it without passing any variables in the URL. There is also an option to feed only new topics as opposed to all posts in a forum.
