NEW SPEC: The Nine

Quote:
Raymon Lull
The beginning of Christian Kabbalah is to be found in the teachings of the Catalan philosopher and mystic, Raymon Lull (1232 - c.1316). Living in a region where the Catholic Church was dominant, but a large part of the land was still under the rule of Moslem Arabs, and the Jews made an important contribution to the culture, Lull had the idea of unifying all three religions by developing a philosophy incoporating elements common to all. And although Lull's ultimate aim was still conversion of the heathens to Christianity, rather than simply tolerance and search for truth for its own sake, the way he intended to convert was through rational and mystical doctrine, rather than the tortues that the Church was to employ so efficently and brutally some two centuries later.

Lull based his Art on the importance which Christian, Moslem, and Jew each attached to the Divine Names or Attributes, or, as he called them, Dignities. Lull mentioned nine Dignities (or Dignitaries): Bonitas (Goodness), Magnitudo (Greatness), Eternitas (Eternity), Potestas (Power), Sapientia (Wisdom), Voluntas (Will), Virtus (Virtue), Veritas (Truth), and Gloria (Glory).

With a little juggling of the order we have all the Kabbalistic Sefirot bar the lowest one, Malkut or "Kingdom" (representing Creation itself):

Sefirah Dignatory
Keter (Crown; Divine Will) = Voluntas (Will)
Hokmah (Wisdom) = Sapientia (Wisdom)
Binah (Intelligence) = Veritas (Truth)
Hesed (Mercy, Love) = Bonitas (Goodness)
Gevurah (Strength) = Potestas (Power)
Tifaret (Beauty) = Virtus (Virtue)
Netzah (Endurance) = Eternitas (Eternity)
Hod (Majesty) = Gloria (Glory)
Yesod (Foundation) = Magnitudo (Greatness)

In addition we also find the incorporation of the four elements and the qualities, the seven planets and twelves signs, medicine, alchemy, geometry, a letter notation, and so on. There is an elaborate system of correspondences, in that the nine Dignitaries have their correspondences in the celestial sphere, the human level, and the animal, plant, and material creation.

In all this we see the influence, not only of Kabbalah, but also of Aristotlean categories, Augustinian Platonism (nearly all the Lullian Dignities can be found listed as Augustine's Divine Attributes), and the celestial hierarchies of angels of the Christian Neoplatonist Dionysius. [Frances A. Yates, The Occult Philosophy in the Elizabethan Age, pp.9-12].

I did a BIGGGG moo moo. I was stealing bandwidth and it got blocked. I am able to save it to my files, but couldn't get it to upload. So I found a site that allows me to upload an image and store it at my own URL. It's about $.50 a month. I want my cow and I missed it too. So she's back.....

I'm curious where I can find the reference that was made by ST1 or Tp or possibly Dale that stated "the nine are named after what they are" or "they're called what they are named" or something to that effect. Been searching high and low. I know it's here somewhere...but for the life of me can't find it.

Help?

Yeah that's what I was getting at, but I was looking for the reference. Just doin some research. The Ennead wasn't mentioned directly in the reference.

Only thing I could find was from a bumber sticker by Wes. If you check the first spolier at
http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1701&highlight=nine+named

If you read the posts after it the emerald tablet of thoth is mentioned as well as spec for what it could mean.

According to TP's reponses to "cite human" it would appear that The Nine wear may masks:

The ennead (Egyptian Mythology)
The nine emperor gods (Chinese mythology)
The nine muses (Greek/Roman mythology) and their mother Mnemosynes

My spec is that The Nine, as we know them, are all of these and more.

There also seems to be a theme of science vs. religion, science vs. magic, etc. This can be seen in the struggle between Avalon and Analog, the principals of Alchemy, the Caduceus (being both a symbol of magic and science).

So...Perhaps The Nine have lost their way, because no one believes in the old gods anymore. As technology, logic, and science have grown to permiate culture, they have slowly lost their identities. They have no more masks to wear...or so they think. What if The Nine were reborn to live in the technological world of today? What if they were given new identities?

Turing Principal might be able to guide them there (she is the modern equivalent of Mnemosyne, the mother of the nine muse). TP seems to be making a journey to transcend her bot-dom to become more human. Sarah has given her the "sacred fire" that allows her to transform and find new pathways. Also, as technology moves to become more human, perhaps the old gods are becoming more human as well as their power wanes.

The only thing that doesn't quite make sense is how does Dale and his wish factor into this whole thing? Is it all part of this grand scheme, or did his actions just have him stumble upon it?

Other "Nines" in Mythology

The Nine Planets

The Nine Worlds of Yggdrasil (Norse Mythology)

The Nine Houses of Gaia (Earth based religion)

The Nine Muses (Greek Mythology)

The Navagraha (Indian Mythology)

The Nine Dragons (Chinese Mythology)

Determining The Age of A Pheonix (Greek Mythology)

The Nine Orders of Angels

The Fianna (Celtic Mythology)

Morgan Le Fey and her nine sisters

Merlin's Nine Bardic Companions

It is also interesting to note that the number "3" has many important meanings in magic and myth. In fact three sets of three equals...nine.

The rule of three.. Planescape made that concept rather (in)famous. Not exactly an easy dungeon crawl concept by any means.

And Three rows of Three give the Mystic Magic Square.

Since it is believed that The Nine each carry a magical stone totem, I've been doing some research to determine what they could be related to...

References to Nine Stones

The Circle of Nine

The Tweleve Riddles

How to Attract Fairies

The Nine Stones on Lucifer's Brestplate

The Nine Stones for The Nine Worlds (Note the symbols on this site)

Images of the Nine Stones of Altarnum (Note the diagram)

More on the Nine Runes

Interesting to note that The World Tree and The Nine Runes of the Nine Worlds are all part of Norse Mythology. Hmmm...
