Server 05 time

If you take the glyph from Starimage1 and overlay it on the image Foz posted, it would roughly line up with the 9 PM mark.

9 PM, coincidentally, is roughly when people were redirected to Bounce Path Control.

The question is - what do the circles represent? Is the earth in the center dot with the moon revolving, or is the moon the center with the earth revolving (from its perspective)?

The same side of the moon always faces us, so from the moon's perspective the earth doesn't orbit it; it just sits in one place and spins.

At least, that's what it seems like to me.

Re: The moon

On the moon theory:

There are 5 glyphs, not counting the 'complete' glyph (the one which has no gap in the outer circle). If each represents particular point in the lunar cycle, and each lunar cycle is (about) 28 days, then 5.6, 11.2, 16.8, 22.4 and 28 days into the cycle should be significant.

Using the link that Foz posted, I found Mobassa in the list of locations, and found the lunar cycle for June (link). Using the moon age (I understand this to be a point in the 28 day cycle, but I culd be wrong, as I couldn't find much to confirm this), we can see that 20th June is about 5.09 days into the lunar cycle, making it the best match to the first glyph. This is when Server 05 was unlocked!

However, the next relevent day is 26th June, about 11.09 days into the cycle. As far as I know, nothing really important happened on that day.

So, I tried going from the date that the game started, the 11th June. Doing a few calculations, I worked out that the 18th June is the first relevent day. Although something happened then, I don't think it's what we're looking for. Going forward again, this time to the 23rd June, we again find that nothing much really happened on that day.

I speculate that the complete glyph is part of the cycle, possibily representing the point when the moon is in the best position. So, I tested what I had done so far against 6 glyphs instead of 5, which leads to every 4.7 days (more accurately, 4.6 recurring) being significant. Going from the first day of the cycle wouldn't yield much better results than having 5 glyphs, so I went straight to calculating from the 11th June again.

Using this system, the 17th June is the first relevent day. This is when the comic ad was actually released, and when we were supposed to find Server 05.

Going forward again, we come to the 22nd June, when nothing really happened. But, if I don't round 4.6 recurring to 4.7, then we get the day before. (Even without rounding we get a value less than the moon age for the 22nd, 7.02, but without rounding we get 6.95). The 21st is the day after Server 05 was unlocked.

Personally, I don't think this is very conclusive. Maybe I'm doing this wrong, or perhaps I'm not accurate enough or something, but I don't think this (or what I've done at least) is enough evidence that the glyphs are related to the lunar cycle.

EDIT: It has occurred to me that perhaps I've got the wrong year. Any suggestions?

Maybe the variations of the glyph are Forerunner symbols.
The open ended symbols represent 5 different species of sentient beings, with the closed symbol representing the forerunner AIs.

Also,
I had a thought about how the four files in server 05 could be linked together. Maybe server 05 is a repository for the forerunner files pertaining to the Flood.

Slide_Ref070107 - a sample cell infected with flood DNA

Starimage1 - a star map showing the Flood's point of origin

Array_Recorder_Data - what was done about the Flood

Log5_transript - I don't know. Maybe a file hack by AR

I took a look at the HD version and it appears to be just a scuff on his armor

Thanks to Foz for Mooncalc! W00t!

Guys, I programmed in Mount Elgon (volcano at coords) and got some cool info for the night between Jun30 and Jul1.

1) Between Sunset-Moonset and Sunrise-Moonrise (I assume it's kind of like a lunar day/night cycle) this night is an equinox! I kid not! They intersect at twelve hours and the set begins getting larger while the rise decreases. So this is a "lunar equinox".

Sounds cool, but this is always related to #2) It's a perfect full moon over Mt. Elgon. "Phase" peaks at .9985 at 4:00 PM on Saturday (30th).

Looked at the "local sky" map and didn't spot anything, but I'm at work and I only looked for a second. Maybe someone should compare it to StarImage1.jpg.

Note: Mount Elgon- N 1deg,8min E 34deg,33min
TimeZone=+3 (suggests +2, but Uganda and Kenya are +3)
Alt. = (I took a guestimate average of peaks, about:) 4220m

Date/Time: 6/30/2007 22:00:00

This theory makes sense to me.

Interesting....

I also find it interesting that every interaction and update has been one day before a major moon phase. June 15th, June 21st.

Something tells me to keep an eye out tonight during this full moon. I think we are gearing up for SOTA membership on July 14th.

edit: I initially thought that AR posted on the 29th, which it was for me on the East Coast. Hmmm.. Maybe we should be on Mt. Elgon time (given the coordinates)? Anyway, still keeping an eye out tonight. If something happens, then I really think the moon is involved in some way.

Sorry, something to add, though it probably isn't significant:

When one looks at the Mount Elgon sky for the 30th this month, beyond there being a full moon, it seems to be directly over the center of sagitarius. Also, something that many have noted, saturn and venus are aligned. Interestingly enough, Mt. Elgon is probably the only place that one can see both this alignment and the moon, since they are on opposite sides of the sky.

I think we will definitely see something tonight.

Because tonight is not just a normal full moon.

On Saturday night, June 30th, step outside at sunset and look around. You'll see a giant moon rising in the east. It looks like Earth's moon with the usual craters and seas, but something's wrong. This full moon is strangely inflated. It's huge!

You've just experienced the Moon Illusion.

Definitely interesting.

Someone may have mentioned this already. Trout me if they have...

I got hit with a fit of nostalgia last night, and went off to play Halo PC. Right in the midst of the level 343 Guilty Spark (The one where you first encounter the flood), I couldn't help but notice that above the doors of the area, similar glyphs were everywhere. (I'll go back and get screenshots tonight after work if someone doesn't beat me to it.)

Ah, the library. The script of that level could be important. It's been posted before.

The script in that god-awful level may in fact be important. But I was referring to the level before that, where the flood break their containment. Similar glyphs are everywhere (Round glyphs, composed of geometric lines and circles). I'm not sure it has much, if any, significance, but perhaps other glyphs like those may show up. Besides which, it lends credence to the idea that AR, or at least the websites, have an anchor in Forerunner history.
