Joe Staten used that as an example of non-canon-ness of the books. It was later found out (in the graphic novel) that he never got injured by the flood, unlike what everyone in the book thought.

But that's just because of Boren's Syndrome, not anything to do with his genome. It's only because his nervous system was disrupted by radiation.
