The text on http://www.societyoftheancients.com/members.html is written ina strange style, and could definitely be a riddle for us to solve. I'll paste this text into my next message.

However, emails sent to anything@societyoftheancients bounce back with the error PERM_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 13): 550 relay not permitted.

Now I'm not an expert, but gmail says that "SMTP Error 550 relay not permitted" is caused by:

This bounce message was not caused by Gmail. This bounce indicates that the recipient domain's MX (Mail exchanger) record is misconfigured, and does not recognize current Gmail servers.
Please contact the domain's administrators to inform them of this issue. If you're a new Google Apps administrator, please be aware that MX record propagation can take up to 48 hours to complete.

As I see it, this means one of two things:

1) At some stage the email server will be configured correctly, and emails will start getting through; or

2) That the real riddle is to replace the domain name (societyoftheancients) with the answer to the riddle.

550, in summary, means that the server doesn't like you/where the email is coming from.

Can't send to 'doyougrokSPLAT206.16.223.63'. The Server gives this reason: '504 <doyougrokSPLAT206>:Recipient address rejected: need fully-qualified address'.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although I don't know a lot about this from looking in Wiki about a 504 server error I believe that the server exists but it timed out.

What do you lot think?

I believe we're on to something! 504 means the email was improperly formatted.

You can't send e-mail to an IP address, unless you do a reverse DNS lookup and get the mail exchanger. There is no SMTP server running on the IP address, either. I feel like there might be one running on some other servers, though, but I haven't checked.

Visitor counter

Maybe if the counter reches some amount (critical mass), then the server may open up, and I'm thinking it could be server #4 . . .

it's around 555k visitors - should try to get it in the range of some Halo-relevant number?

Maybe - but the counter couldn't automatically trigger opening of a server - it's hosted on a third party site.

So what is the general consensus? Do most people feel we just have to wait for it to open up, or that we need to find the right domain? Is it possible we just haven't found the correct first part to the email?? After all, doyougrok is a question, essentially meaning do you understand... maybe the right email is some sort of proof we understand.

Yeah, I discussed that in the thread [Spec] DoYouGrok

EDIT: There's been a change in societyoftheancients.com source code... nothing major, the counter doesn't work anymore, though.

I agree.. though it would be nice. And as a technical aside, if we can see the counter, so can the website, even if it's a third party counter. Technically therefore, the content could update once the counter reaches a certain 'mass'. But I highly doubt it will, as cool as that would be.

Sorry, redct, but the counter still goes up for me. Is it a problem on your end? Have you tried another computer?

Well it would be annoying if we had to get the counter to 777,777. Well either way it seems that we are waiting for something.

SOTA

Has anyone noticed that the SOTA members sign in page is under-construction. In all likelyhood if SOTA is a part of the game its being run by Microsoft correct? So the memberships sign in page is down on purpose, assuming Microsoft is in charge. The first thing on the site is a quote by Issac Newton "...diverting myself now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me." In other words little things are diverting us, like mailing lists, and what not. Does anyone know anything about the background. How to break it down, its code, has anyone noticed anything in it. Just a thought.
