Has anyone noticed that the SOTA members sign in page is under-construction. In all likelyhood if SOTA is a part of the game its being run by Microsoft correct? So the memberships sign in page is down on purpose, assuming Microsoft is in charge. The first thing on the site is a quote by Issac Newton "...diverting myself now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me." In other words little things are diverting us, like mailing lists, and what not. Does anyone know anything about the background. How to break it down, its code, has anyone noticed anything in it. Just a thought.
Stupendous spec! Let's see...the membership page may in fact be down on purpose if Microsoft is hosting it! And, now that you mention it, a code may be hidden somewhere...perhaps in the page source! ZOMG release the hounds this fire it out of control we're going to burn this city!!

Does sound like good spec...! Nothing in the source, though. It's been checked a bunch of times. The only thing I can think of is the suspect b-startile2 gif. But it's gone now

better yet, a quick way to see if an email address exists?
without having to fill out an email everytime just in case in works?
That would be a verify command, which is standard for all smtp servers, but the catch is that most people disable this function because spammers love to abuse it.
I tried anyway to no avail. I did an mx look up on societyoftheancients.com which responded that the mail server for societyoftheancients.com is custmx.register.com. I telneted into custmx.register.com on port 25, here's the transcript:
Quote:
220 mail03.nyat.register.com ESMTP Exim 4.32 Tue, 26 Jun 2007 22:24:33 -0400
vrfy doyougrokSPLAT societyoftheancients.com <- My verify command
252 Administrative prohibition <- Servers response: "not a chance buddy, go away"

The Wisdom Of Isaac Newton That first quote there is about as blatantly obvious as it gets when it comes to being a double entendre. It fits in nicely with the site, almost like a mission statement or motto, but I just can't help but think it serves as a clue or a hint that the site serves as something more than just a site with a few pictures and a background with bad taste.

So I don't know if it's significant but I just noticed that on the member sign in page (the one that says the site is under construction) it says to refer questions to the national headquarters PO box... do we know what that is? And is that something people do in ARGs?

I don't believe there's anything about a PO Box anywhere, although this would make some sense, considering the membership application is a PDF file without editable text fields, meaning it's meant to be printed out. Then again, the way it seems so hastily put together, it might just be a deadend meant to fit in with the overall amateur style of the site.

What do you do with the partial address given in the source code?
I tried tacking it onto the SOTA site's address and it's not working:

Another strange thing about the SOTA website is the text banner at the top that constantly scrolls 'Society of the Ancients.' Its strange because it scrolls from the left to the right.
This is odd because everbody reads from left to right, which is why banners usually scroll from the right to the left, so that you can read them properly.
IE on the SOTA site the first word you see on the banners is Ancients instead of Society.
Just a minor detail I'm sure but maybe its a clue to look at something the opposite way....
Or I could just be clutching at straws again, but after a week who can blame me

I might actually go try to read it backwards.
