[Spec] "DoYouGrok"

I just had one of those gigantic lightbulb moments Very Happy

The email "DoYouGrok" is formatted like a question. "Hey, do you grok?"

Maybe we need to find the correct answer to that question.

Quote:

From Wiki: Grok (IPA /gɹɑk/ (GA) or /gɹɒk/ (RP), both rhyming with rock) is a verb that connotes an internalized way of knowing -- knowledge greater than that which can be sensed by an outside observer. It is an understanding beyond empathy and intimacy. In grokking, one experiences the literal capabilities and frame of reference of the subject.

you can see it means you know extremely well, even above empathy and intimacy. My guess is something like a strong father-son connection would be something like that.

Anyways, there are one of two things.

1: We need to answer the question - "Do you (or collectively, we) grok?" or in other words, "Do we understand?" Maybe we send the answer and it won't bounce. Or maybe the actual email is "YesIGrok" or something like that Very Happy

2: Or, we be looking for a way to "grok" or understand the whole situation. Maybe we need to find something to help us really understand the whole situation. Maybe it's still hidden somewhere (sounds impossible, I know, but who knows)

...or I could just be rambling about ideas coming off the top of my head Cool

Just something to think about..

I was looking at the same thing last night, wondering if that meant anything. And by last night, I mean this morning at 6 a.m., so I really didnt get too far. :\

As far as sending the e-mail, correct me if I'm wrong, but the content of the e-mail doesn't matter, it's just simply bouncing everything sent to it.

But I do like the idea of finding an "answer" to the question, with it possibly being a new e-mail at which to send mail to.

So... do we grok? Has anyone with the keys tried [key number]@...?

Good theory, I guees it was already pointed somewhere else but it would be nice if every try to "crack" the e-mail is centralized here.

I'm not sure if emails can have stuff like = and / in it. But I'll try.

Also, I'm trying to think about what we need to "grok" or what the answer to the question is, but it's making my brain hurt Very Happy

grok

I'm going to try "YesIgrok" and "Yeswegrok". I might also try some of the antonym forms. I also tried simply "Igrok" and "wegrok"

Edit: all bounced

Actually, when sending a message to DoYouGrokSPLATsocietyoftheancients.com, you receive the following bounce error:

host custmx.register.com [216.21.229.239]: 550 relay not permitted

This error is returned from custmx.register.com (the mail server bound to the DNS MX record for societyoftheancients.com) indicating that relay is not permitted for this domain. In summary, ANYTHING @societyoftheancients.com will bounce until their mail server permits relays for the domain. Just thought I'd point that out.

Thanks for pointing that out. But why mention an email when all it does is bounces?

Answer: to infuriate your ARG players Smile

Even though the server isn't taking mail (yet), I would say we should keep looking for the answer.

FYI, "grok" originated in "Stranger in a Strange Land", a scifi book by Robert Heinlein. wiki is right in that "grok" means to completely understand something as much as possible. (That book is a strange trip).

Here's the definitive definition from the American Heritage Dictionary:

To understand profoundly through intuition or empathy.

Who would we have empathy for? AR?

Wait, what evidence do we have that "sota.com" is ingame? People keep referring to it, but it appears to be OOG.

sota.com is nothing. I think people are using that as a nickname so they don't have to type the whole thing. It's www.societyoftheancients.com

The one time I recall somebody thinking that it did work, the email client had done something odd but mundane with the bounce back message.

Because of the "protest" going on in New York with the people wearing the bright yellow shirts, calling themselves the Society of the Ancients and on their shirts they had AR's symbol on it.

That AND the fact that it's from a very similar IP as the Server 5 IP (which are both owned by Microsoft).

And "Grok" was originally used in the science fiction book "Stranger In Strange Land". It's by Robert Heinlen and it's about humans going to Mars and discovering that a human was there, but the human was raised by Martians and the Martians used the word "Grok" to mean "to understand in a way that it becomes one with you".
(the trippy part about the book was that the human they found there turned out to be a reincarnated version of a leader of a certain church...)
