Email Iris the puzzle box and more on Todd and Wes

Dear Investigators,

I know that you are Phyllis's friends and I hope you will not mind my
writing to you. Unfortunately, the person I most enjoyed talking to has
informed me that she will not be part of your group any more and has stopped answering my email, so I hesitate to send this along to her, for fear you all never get it. Have you any way to find out what so upset her? I know some have been very rude to me and I am surprised that you would be rude to each other to such an extent that one of you would leave the investigation! It saddens me, you know. I really enjoyed talking with her and now I feel as if I do not have any close friends among you. I believe in open and honest communication and how can you have that if people are getting upset and hurt?

Anyway, enough criticism. Let me get back to why I am writing:

By now you probably have heard from Phyllis about all the things that have been going on. Can you believe that we are now sharing visions? I knew that two women living together often came into synch, but this is way too much!

Phyllis said that she would tell you about the similar parts of our dreams, so I will not bore you with those details. I do, however, wonder what the nine objects Sarah was wrapping could be. I know some of you have mentioned that you were searching for objects. Could these be the ones you seek?

In my part of the vision that differed from Phyllis's, I found myself in a
very large, very ornate and sumptuous office with the only illumination coming from a fire that burned in the fireplace behind me, though I feel no heat at all. Before me, Don Marzano was seated at a desk, his eyes half closed as he caressed whatever it was that he held in his hand. The expression on his face was odd, as if he were feeling pleasant sensations that he wished to focus on. He seemed to glow with enjoyment and I wonder whether he was not gaining energy or sustenance from the object somehow. After a moment he reached out and carefully placed the object into a box that I had not noticed on the desk and then ran his hands caressingly along the box's surface. He then stood and turned, walking to an open safe behind the desk. He carefully placed the object inside, moving as if it were some priceless artifact. He was just starting to push the door shut when a noise behind him made him turn around. He stood up and said, "Ah, old friend, I have been waiting for you." My vision dream ended as I saw JD come into the room.

We then searched the hole in the closet and you would not believe the box we
found. Phyllis says it is a Japanese style puzzle box which comes in many
different styles and levels of complexity, though the clouds on it seem to her to be more Chinese in style. There is a lovely picture of a dragon in the center and the color of the wood is a pretty green. I will try to get Chris to post some pictures of it so you can all see them.

Chris and James have spent hours and hours looking at the box and researching it over the internet. Thank god their equipment is more up to date than mine! Anyway, they have finally decided that the box is a 27 move 4 sun style box, which means it will take 27 moves to open the damn thing! It has four sliding panels and two sliding keys to be manipulated in a certain sequence, though we have had no luck with it so far. The box is 3.2" W x 4.6" L x 2.2" H and weighs about 8 ounces. Unfortunately we couldn't feel anything inside as we shook it, so this may turn out to be a lot of work for nothing.

We left the two of them working on the box when Phyllis and I left to meet Wes at 8 pm last night. He seemed nervous when we got there and looked up and down the street before locking the door behind us. After exchanging awkward pleasantries, Wes took Phyllis and I into his office where he had Sarah's statue out on his desk.

There was so much that happened and so much information that he told us that I wound up taking notes. What I am about to tell you comes from those notes, so I apologize if they are not verbatim. As you will see, Wes was rather talkative last night.

First, Wes said that things are getting dangerous, so he wanted to warn us.

He told us that he has heard from Dale and that Dale is ok, but he did not
tell us where Dale is or allow any questions at that point.

He said that Dale has received another message from the people holding Tracie through Sam. Dale will be filling everyone in about what the message said and what he is doing.

Wes said the people looking for Dale are getting desperate and are threatening and actually moving against people, so he wanted us both to be very careful. He also said these people (he called them the 'deadeyes') seem to be attracted to or fixated upon certain artifacts or objects, particularly the things made by Sarah. He warned us to think about anything we might have of hers.

He said that since we are involved and seem willing to help, Dale and he have agreed to let us and that he will fill us in on what they know.

He repeated again his warning about the deadeyes and said 'do not approach them'. I asked 'Why?' and Wes seems to get upset. Phyllis and I pressed him for an answer and he said, 'I guess you deserve to know. I haven't told anyone else about this yet, except Dale, but I was planning on doing it soon, because they should know too.'

He proceeded to tell us that years ago he was contacted by someone he later learned was from the group we now call the 'mythopshere guides'. It was a man from the Ashram who was interested in Wes' writings and research. Wes was suspicion but went along far enough to understand he was being recruited into some kind of secret society. Because of his past experiences, he already knew enough to understand the hidden references the man was making. Wes, however, was too independent to join anything like that, especially a group that seemed dedicated to being secretive. Wes believes in exposing things to the public (like the Jersey Devil) at least to some extent. So he broke off contact with them. They persisted throughout the years, apparently keeping tabs on him. Eventually, Wes' only son Todd discovered Wes's hidden notes and began studying the things Wes had learned through the years but had never discussed or written about. Wes did not know Todd had done this, Todd was a teenager and very independent. After a while, Wes learned what was happening and he confronted Todd. Todd admitted to what he had been doing and also to being contacted by the guides. Wes was relieved to learn Todd turned them down also, but was devastated when Todd said, 'But I have found a different way. I have found different teachers with real power.' He refused to elaborate and Wes grew very scared but couldn't get anything else out of him at that time. The next day Todd disappeared and Wes had not heard from him since, until he learned he was with the group we know as the numbered ones.

Wes said: "You see, they came and took him. They changed him. That's what I am afraid will happen to everyone else who has learned of them." (Though I wonder whether this was Todd's choice or if it was forced upon him?)

He then said that he is going to go and try to deal with something for Dale
while Dale is dealing with another aspect. He refused to elaborate but
promised to fill us in soon. He said that in the meantime he wanted us both to be careful. He thinks we should consider going on vacation away from Aglaura or something for awhile, but to leave a way for them to contact us.

Of course, we would never consider leaving and Wes is crazy to even suggest such a thing! Here we stand on the precipice looking down at knowledge of things we cannot imagine and he wants us to leave? Wes is such a fool if he thinks we will turn all scared and leave!

I am glad that Wes is finally starting to open up. I think perhaps we can use this new openness to find out more about what is happening and maybe, just maybe, I can finally meet this Mr. Sprague!

An example of the puzzle box can be seen here.

4 sun refers to the length of the puzzle box (approximately 4.88 inches).

Also, according to this site, all puzzle boxes are Japanese in nature. The misperception of the boxes being Chinese in origin arose from them being sold in small shops in Chinatown.

I have one of these (moderate difficulty one) I offered my help to Phyllis. I have the instructions still for mine and told her I could possibly help.
