[Update] 6.19 - AdjutantReflex - "The stain on his hands"

The stain on his hands will not wash.
That damned spot as old as rock and time.
What has he learned in Eon's slumber?
I doubt it's mercy or sorrow.
I am diminished.
Outranked.

"Damned Spot"? As in "Out, damned spot! out, I say!"?

Another Macbeth reference?

Yes, this is definitely another Macbeth reference.

Also, unlikely but worth noting, there is an image of a hand with a spot on the SOTA Evidence page, first image.

In chat, we're cooking up a theory that whatever is eating AR is a Forerunner that created the Flood.

Yet another Gravemind reference.

There has always been some speculation that Gravemind is an infected Forerunner. Perhaps that would explain the outranking of Adjutant Reflex and the references taken from Macbeth.

Lady Macbeth's famous line, "Out, damned spot!" is uttered during her manic sleepwalk, where she is observed trying to remove figurative blood from her hands, which of course, will not wash off. It is her guilt over her part in a murder that drives her to such madness.

Not to get too far OT, but that kinda makes me think of Cortana. If it was a Forerunner AI that created the Flood, then wouldn't it be interesting if it was somehow Cortana and the Gravemind together, since they seem to transcend time. In essence, it'd be like creating itself, like how they they've supposedly always existed. And the way she's starting to go crazy/rampant kind of matches the Queen's quote there.

I'm seeing repeat information. Can we pick a thread for today's goodies and consolidate?

And as a favor to those of us who can't IRC, could we be kept up-to-date if anything spiffy comes of the conversation? (Danke in advance!)

Hmm. Whether the flood were created or just found and imprisoned by the forerunner is a good question. If the flood were indeed created and then inadvertently unleashed upon the universe, the forerunner would have pretty bloody hands, having to use the halos to contain their mistake.

I thought it was interesting how AR capitalized "Eon", and how he said "Eon's slumber" rather than "Eons of slumber". So, on a hunch, I wiki'd it. Here's what I found:

Quote:
The Latin word aeon, also spelled eon or æon, means "age," "forever," or "for eternity". It is derived from the koine Greek word αίών (aion), which at one point meant "age," "a period of existence" or "life". ("That old life"?)

[snip]

In Gnosticism

In many Gnostic systems, the various emanations of God, who is also known by such names as the One, the Monad, Aion teleos (The Perfect Aeon), Bythos (Depth or profundity, Greek Βυθός), Proarkhe (Before the Beginning, Greek πρόαρχή), the Arkhe (The Ark?) (The Beginning, Greek ή αρχή), are called aeons. This first being is also an æon and has an inner being within itself, known as Ennoea (Thought), Charis (Grace), or Sige (Greek Σιγη, Silence). (Others and I had theorized that AR was a component part of a larger entity. Maybe AR is wondering what his enemy has learned while Eon (his "parent" entity) has been in hibernation?) The split perfect being conceives the second aeon, Caen (Power), within itself. Along with the male Caen comes the female æon Akhana (Truth, Love).

Aeons bear a number of similarities to Judaeo-Christian angels, including their roles as servants and emanations of God, and their existence as beings of light. (AR characterized himself as a "facilitator") In fact, certain Gnostic Angels, such as Armozel, also happen to be Aeons[2].

The aeons often came in male/female pairs called syzygies, and were frequently numerous (20-30). Two of the most commonly listed æons were Jesus and Sophia. The aeons constitute the pleroma, the "region of light." The lowest regions of the pleroma are closest to the darkness — that is, the physical world. ("Who is the path of light from blackest Earth to brilliant heaven?")

Call me crazy, but there seem to be many parallels between this whole Gnostic philosophy and AR's cryptic messages. IIRC, this specific set of beliefs had been found by someone before -- I remember someone talking about Arkhe and the pleroma.

Whaddya think?

Interesting to note AR is saying that "The stain on his hands will not wash.", not AR's. It's a bit of a stretch to rationalize what we've seen of Gravemind feeling guilt.

Perhaps a rampant Forerunner AI not unlike Guilty Spark or Penitent Tangent?

If you follow that train of thought, then couldn't the Iris simply be a Forerunner AI, as we originally thought? Supposed AR is just a small program meant to monitor things while the Ark is dormant. He's developed a fondness for humans, having watched them grow on Earth. But now Iris, the real AI of the Ark is awakening and when it sees that the flood have been let loose, it's going to activate the Halos (again) to stop them. Thus, AR is trying to warn us, but it's pretty hopeless for him, since Iris outranks him.

Rampant AIs were a main plot point in Marathon, so it might not be unlike Bungie to create another rampant AI, since they have experience in this field already. Smile

This is probably the most reasonable theory.

The rest of us are just Spec'ing.
