San Diego?

I would approve wholeheartedly, although those who do not live in California might be a little less enthusiastic about a second consecutive West-coast ARGfest.

I think I can even convince konashark to come to this one - he should be sufficiently distracted by the games & comics & tv & movie related stuff enough to ignore the fact that we'll have to make "nice nice" with his mother-in-law (who lives in the vicinity).

For what it's worth, New Orleans is a great city for cons & for drinks too!

Happenings that may be fun
New Orleans Wine FestivalMarch 9 - May 23 at Dominique's in The Maison Dupuy Hotel.

St Patty's day parades & the Irish Italian parades

French Quarter Festival14 musical stages throughout the historic Vieux Carré and New Orleans cuisine from nearly 60 food and drink booths. April 13-15, 2007

We have tons of hotels open & I can do much of the leg work for great rates. We have the zoo, aquarium, WWII Museum, Art Museums, Bourbon Street, Mardi Gras World, Preservation Hall, The Garden District, Streetcars, great shops & lots of fun all the time.

I know I had to drop out for a bit, but life has stabilized here & I am available & know tons of folks out here to help things along (even taxi/limo companies that only chare $13 per person from airport to the quarter)

Most of our hotels have convention areas that will suit our size crowd. And, since we are trying to get our tourism back up to it's pre-K numbers, many hotels will work with us as far as group rates go.

So my 2 cents - and if not here - Greenfairy & I were really looking forward to a EuroARGFest

Despite the fact that I LOVE the idea of ComiCon, I have to agree with Red Hatty that New Orleans is a great place for a convention. It's relatively inexpensive, everyone is super-friendly, and there are lots of venues to choose from for various hijinx. I went to Convergence 2006 in New Orleans, and I've never had so much fun.

Honestly? All the places that have been suggested for ARGFest 2008 sound amazing and lots of fun. At this point, I just want to know for sure the When and Where of ARGFest because I need to schedule the time off with work and start saving my pennies if the event is held in Europe or Canada. Wink

Hmm, how about a date in which I'm not in school. I surely would like to break my streak of being an ARGFest-o-skipper... but you know how much I like to maintain a reputation...

Having the fest close to a major event would add a nice social special, and take a bit of weight off the shoulders of the planners. I believe GDC was close to ARGfest07, but it was a week afterwards and not too many people could take an extra week vacation to make it... it depends on the schedule of the special event though as well, whether it overlaps or happens during the week or weekend.
I'm still definitely up for Toronto, but I and other Ontarians would have to do some checking out for good possible dates to propose (and being an hour from TO, I've got room for visitors to stay overnight Smile). But San Diego - though I agree a 2nd west-coast fest might be inconvenient for some - would be sweet if it were close to Comic-Con... And the idea of a UK argfest is still enticing as well, though that would be more difficult for north american locals, so might be better as a sister event. There are always benefits and drawbacks to any location, which is unfortunate because someone will always feel left out. We just have to put our faith in the organizers and take what comes, just like any other annual gathering/convention/event.
But now I'm just raising old topics again =P. And the next event is still a ways off anyway.

This is a double-edged sword, though. Ask Rose what it was like trying to get a block of hotel rooms in San Francisco just before GDC: In addition to the general state of bookedness of rooms in the city, GDC was working with the local Tourism Board in allocating hotel space, and most of the major hotels in town were going along with this scheme, even in the period shortly preceding the conference. Before a hotel would sell us a block of rooms, they had to get the go-ahead from GDC, and thus we had to convince GDC that our little gathering would not interfere with their plans for allocating hotel resources. Had they found our plans objectionable, we would have had to find a hotel that was not working with GDC and the Tourism Board. And while that wasn't impossible, it would have vastly decreased our choices and probably meant getting a lot less value per cost.

My point is that in the dog-eat-dog conference ecosystem, we are a fairly small dog, and that is worth keeping in mind.

Not to resurrect an old thread (although it has to come up eventually I suppose), but I'd like to whole-heartedly give two thumbs up to Austin/San Antonio around SXSW.

A place I've always wanted to visit, I've always wanted to go to SXSW (although it looks like that might be a little expensive Smile ), and I have family there that I can stay with...

Also, New Orleans would be awesome.

So..... that's my vote..... I know it comes down to whomever is planning this thing.

Carry on.

Heh... All I want to know at this point is a definite "When" and "Where" so I can snag the vacation time before anyone else in my office does. If I don't know soon, I won't be able to attend. Sad
