Seemed offputting to me, too.
If they made all these people sign non-disclosure agreements, and supposedly fire an fx guy for releasing a few pictures... it's pretty clear they're not just going to open their mouths and tell some random guy "it's about ALIENS!!!"
So to me it's either
a) he's full of crap and trying to get attention
or
b) he's looking at a mess of legal ramifications and is just trying to get attention
or
c) they messed with him, and he's just trying to get attention.

THIRD ROAR (on the street): This one I haven't been able to analyze along with the video because of system problems, but shortly after the roar, before the SOL hits the first building, you hear a "whoosh, whoosh..." sound. I refuse to believe that the SOL makes that sound spinning through the air, as it doesn't really have anything to cause the kind of air resistance needed for such a powerful sound. When I analyzed it two days ago, it sounded to me similar to the flapping of wings... like Ziz.

Maybe?

The whooshes could be caused by air flow through the neck hole of the statues head. Two rotations before it hits would cause the two whooshes.

Like I said, I haven't had the chance to visually match it up with the trailer. And, for that matter, there were more than two "whooshes"; I just didn't feel like being that repetitive.

In any event, I still don't buy that air flow through the "neck hole" would do it. Isn't the SOL a closed environment? "Air flow" would imply air flowing in and out. And, even so, on an object that's rotating at a constant speed it wouldn't fade in and out like that. "Whoosh" sounds are generally made by fluctuations in speed and wind resistance; speed doesn't fluctuate, and wind resistance is arguable.

I'll just have to wait and see the video.

I'm not convinced that it's all BS. "Alien" may be BS, but it's definitely a large creature, that destroys at least some part of NYC, maybe not all of it. There's only two reasons why you'd want to film it with handheld camcorders - you're being really cheap about it, or you want to tell the story from the perspective of the people witnessing the events as they unfold - and to do so, you would have to be viewing it after the fact since showing the camcorder's recording while it's recording it makes no sense unless you're being really cheap about the production. So this collaborates the idea that the movie's setting is after the events of 1-18-08, when government cleanup crews discover home videos and review them to find out what they were actually dealing with.

This is also very convenient production-wise. It allows a few of the home videos to be used for teaser trailers in their entirety, which don't have to appear in the actual movie; which means the actual movie will be all-new content that nobody has seen before, instead of having the trailer created from snippets of the actual film. It also allows the production to film in many different locations and on different days without any of the footage being linked to one central plot theme (No recurring characters at the shoot sites.) It also allows the main plot to be told in reverse, from what we already know about it "Big monster, NYC, destruction" to telling which direction it came from, to telling where it originally came from, to telling what created it.

It also means we may be reading too much into Rob's story. We may have to wait for the next teaser trailer release before we can pursue this further.

And those "Whooshes" would be created whenever the open end of a cylinder, tube, or jarlike object comes into wind resistance and air seeps into the object causing a reverberation (Like blowing air over an open bottle), in this case intermittently since the object is spinning and air resistance would not occur while the open end is facing towards and away from the direction it's heading in. It's also definitely a metallic object that's making the sound. Although I can tell it's pitch-adjusted during the trailer, it could be dismissed as a weak attempt at the doppler effect as the head is flying towards the camera. I encourage anyone with a metal pipe and a large open area to fling it end over end through the air and listen for a similar sound it makes.

While all the guessing about the monster in the movie might be fun and all, it really doesn't have much to do with the ARG, does it? It doesn't much matter, so far as I can see whether the beastie that's tear-assing around Manhattan is Godzilla, Leviathan, or Gozer the Destructor.

I'm fairly sure we've seen all we're going to see of the monster. Abrams isn't about to give away the biggest secret connected to the movie before the thing opens, so all we're doing is throwing a bunch of guesses at the wall and wondering which one will stick in six months.

Of course, I blame Abrams' people for this. They've given us scraps and gristle so far as an ARG goes - the faintest hunts that one exists, but no real way to get it started.

I suppose my point is that I'd be surprised if 200 posts in this thread were actually about the ARG and not some side-issue. It makes for some darned frustrating reading. The more I see it, the less inclined I am to pay attention to the movie when it comes out. I'm fairly sure that's not what Abrams intends.

Not quite. The interior of the SoL is open so people can climb it (when it's not shut down for 'security' reasons). The neck and head are hollow, so if you sever the head and toss it, with rotation, you'll get air moving in and out of the head through the neck as it spins in and out of the wind.

Damn it, now my QuickTime Pro installation decided "screw this, I've had enough. I'm outta here," and refuses to run.

Damn you, Abrams!

If you've ever heard the sound of real artillery and not what hollywood gives you, or the sound of a ricochet about taking your head off, then yes, solid chunks of metal can make sounds like that.

I would imagine that any special effect shot would be extremely hard to produce using the hand-held camera. Imagine all the post-production trying to match a computer generated explosion or a SOL head flying down the street to a wobbly hand held film

In reference to that comment about the word 'subway' being heard around the same time as the 'it's alive, it's huge' line, I've got earphone in, and I can just about make it out.

I'll see if I can work out what's said.

oh god if the monster is Jared from the subways commercials...

he turned into the biggest whale

Well it's probably not being shot with your standard-grade consumer handheld. Rather easy to give the impression of that.

OK, then. I'll take everybody's word for it... Besides, I hate to have to explain to my wife what I'm doing throwing metal pipes in the back yard. It's hard enough to explain what I've been doing sitting at the computer eighteen hours a day for the last five days.

If the entire scene is pretty much a digital reproduction (as has been proven when they're on the street), it's not as complicated as you think it is.

Also, the first thing they do is map, frame by frame, the camera movements to relative space. They create the area in three dimensions, devoid of anything else, then map the camera movements frame by frame, and then they add in everything else. So, when they're doing the actual animation, they're no longer concerned as much about where the camera's facing exactly.

I'm just amazed that they can do ANY type of FX work, from conceptual design to the big screen, in anywhere from six to nine months.

does anybody know how the japanese form names in marriage and birth? does the last name go first like arabic, or first first, and last changes like english?

i found something about kajiki ryouta, which gives a nickname of freaky fish guy, and says that he's always found around or in water...ryouta was daddies name on slusho...so, if the names swing that way...
