To help with the timeline, I recall someone saying that the news broadcast said twelve twenty-something above the temperature. I can't tell on my laptop screen, so I'd need confirmation.

This means the roar happened between 12:01 and whatever time the newscast occured.

I don't know that the flashback for the end of the trailer necessarily confirms that the movie will be told in flashback. I think it's mainly there for effect.

Timeframe Questions

The Trailer doesn't have a completely consistent runtime meaning that the camera starts and stops during the party. Also, the camera is not on Rob the entire time so he could have been off drinking while the girl was being interviewed or something else was happening. this would imply that the Photos on 1-18-08 were not captured from that video camera or if they were the video in the trailer was edited in such a way as to cut those pictures out. As the second scenario seems unnecessarily complex, i.e. you start asking; Why would they edit the video?, why were those scenes taken out? I'm willing to go with the first explanation that the photos were from a different device. I don't remember the trailer having a running timestamp in the bottom right corner but I've only seen it a few times. Couldn't that be enough of a reason to assume they were different video capture devices.

Has anyone tried arranging the pictures like the hands of a clock, starting at 12:01 and then letting them tick to 12:36?

Just an idea that popped into my head. I would try it now but I am at work and a little too busy to spend 30 minutes looking at weird pictures Smile

The photos are not screen caps from the trailer, they are being taken by a digital camera, not the handheld camcorder that the trailer is being shot on.

There might be something to that. Can anyone in the trailer be seen holding a digital camera? Maybe that character is the one taking these pictures and can give us another clue?

Well well well....

I don't think the link to the apple trailer is a bootleg copy by a longshot. Nightowl needs to be using this one, by far the best quality of them all (and see, they're not pulled by Paramount..... ;-p)

Clearly they're in a place with lots of graffitti....

Oh and one sec...I got this coming

HELL YEAH, that's the bone ;-p Or a good one.

Finally a time. 12:32AM so that helps show there's flashbacking going on. Why is Rob getting a drink at 12:31A and then everybodys at the tv at 12:32A?

EDIT - Typo and I ran off with it. Disregard that but not the time showing on the screen.

But if you watch the trailer you know this scene wasn't in it anywhere, so it's a timeframe reference AGAIN, it had to have been taken before the events of the trailer. The party, however, had to be going on technically the night of January 17, 2008...that's when it began.

The key here looks more like the clues are in the timing, not the letters/numbers being hidden. They hid something in plain site here....and we're missing it.

A couple of interesting points here. I'm not sure the 12:01 photo has to be read as taking place before the events of the trailer - the trailer itself is (at least in its presentation) a montage of footage taken during the party - people giving well-wishes to Rob, dancing, etc. - it seems most likely to me that the 12:01 photo is contiguous to the events in the first half of the trailer.

As to 12:26, I know there's some debate on this but I'm reasonably sure we do see the darker-skinned woman in the trailer. I don't have the timecode in front of me, but early in the trailer isn't she the busty woman we see dancing? In the same way that you argue above that we should see the date/title for what it is (the release date of the movie), it seems like the 12:26 photo is most plausibly read as being some point in the aftermath of the horrific events in the second half of the trailer.

Dramatically speaking, it seems that the 1-18-08 website is currently teasing us with the question of "what the hell happened to go fro A to B?" From happy to horror.

Except that this is my biggest point of contention with your notion that the numbers and/or symbols buried in the images aren't what we should be looking at. From an in-game perspective, it seems that the iconography of arg would lead us to deciphering clues buried in the images - indeed, that type of discovery is part of the fun, and was part of the fun in another game at least tangentially related to this one - the LOST arg.

I would argue that buried symbolism is very much a part of both Abrams' and Goddard's methodology. It seems to me that this is very much a part of the exploration of this game, if indeed there is a game here at all.

To me, though, the coolest thing is that if there is not a game in play, we have essentially created one ourselves. I mean, seriously: at this point if they put a random photo of a rose on the website, the internet would light up with discussion about how this is "The Dark Tower" (despite the fact that nothing else about it even gives a hint of that). If they placed a picture of a lizard scale, all the legalistic IP rights arguments in the world wouldn't stop the Godzilla spec. Hell, I'm kind of surprised that people haven't mentioned WATCHMEN yet - it's a Paramount project and includes the sudden appearance of a giant monstrosity in its final act (though it is very much dead and 1-18-08 is not Watchmen).

I guess my point is that we're already down the rabbit hole whether there's a game afoot or not, so why rule any theories off the table?

OK, been looking at the high-def trailer for a while now, here's what stands out:

chick with big boobs dancing (I had to get it out there)

no, seriously

when a black-haired girl is talking, you can see the clock as 10:15
Paddle of a fraternity Alpha Kappa Mu
12:32 news broadcast - 63 degrees
nothing special at 1:18, people going down stairs...

In 780p, a few things become obvious.

There's a guy with a digital camera as Rob walks in. Probably the photographer of the website pics.

"We'll miss you Rob" banner appears to be a photo collage, which might explain the presence of the strange looking number.

The fridge has two stickers on it that say "Mystery". Probably nothing more than a wink.

There's a marked up map of Manhattan on the wall at :48.

Also at :48, there's a faternity paddle that says Alpha Kappa Mu. A quick google reveals that AKM is a national honors society, but the colors don't match up, so I don't know.

I can't wait for this to really take off. It's gonna be awesome.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but he was drinking at 12:01.

Interestingly enough, that page says "In theaters: Coming Soon." Either someone at Apple is stupid, or Paramount told them not to put a date.

From iTunes downloadable teaser trailer:

1-18-08
Paramount Pictures

No synopsis provided by the studio.

In Theatres: Dec 31st, 1969
Rating: Not yet rated

Action and Adventure, Science Fiction

Notice the 'In Theatres' date..if this is releasing 1-18-08..why not indicate THAT as the date? Maybe 1-18-08 IS the title?!
