 Official/InStealthMode

A while ago, I stumbled upon a website entitled 'official.com'.
That website lead to another website, called 'instealthmode.com'.
The former stated "OFFICIAL.COM IS IN STEALTH MODE. LAUNCHING SUMMER 2007.", and the latter specified 07/07/07 as the launch date.
Last summer, the site gave out 'clues', which are as follows:
authOrity

[+/-]

shepherd

solomon

israel bissell

douglas

As of 07/07/07, they updated ISM, and now if you go there, you'll find a bunch of incomplete URLs.
If anyone has any information, or is interested in looking into this, it would be most appreciated.
^_^;
Thanks.

Well, I had a look at both official.com and InStealthMode and this definitely looks interesting. I checked the WhoIs and both seem to be owned by Dreamseller Inc. Can't find anything really IG from there, though. I'm trying to email them at the moment, asking them about all this. I'll let you know what I come up with

Not sure if it's anything more than a strange coincidence but, using what rogi found, taking the implied(I think) meaning I went to www.areyouaplayer.com
It's the same as the instealthmode "404" page.

Means nothing in itself as I'm sure the hosting company has thousands of these pages, although what caught my eye was the title of the page,
"areyouaplayer.com™ email us: manager(@)domainagency(.)com - We're in stealth mode. All Rights Reserved."
*italics mine

So possibly a future IG site? Or am I grasping at straws here?
Also the "#153" might be construed as the concept number of the site.

Edit:
Here's something I just found to give validity to my above claim.
http://www.run.tv/ (found by mentally brute forcing Smile ) .
Again, same style page with "We're in stealth mode" in the title, but this time the whois actually turned something up, the page is on the instealthmode servers.

I'd suggest not sending anything to these guys myself. After a bit of searching in a good ARG fassion I've found InStealthMode have been 'launching' for years.

I think they use the triple number date thing every year and at least goes back to 3/3/03 (LINK). They also own a bunch of domain names (this LINK from 2005 putting that number at 23,000), many of them linking to that /inactive/ part from the site avpruler ruler mentions below. Looking further on namepros, I found a thread (LINK) with mention of someone who wanted to buy one of the domains that linked to InStelthMode and in there someone says the owner goes by the name 'Taboo' and uses the an email 'sponsorcash@mail.com'.

Now googling 'Taboo sponsorcash' will get you a bunch of links to posts by the person themselves, although the board they are on is snfw so I won't direct link it (it's easy enough to find through google). They have over 3,700 post on that board and last post there was on the 15th of last month.

So yeah, the InStealthMode person is just one of those domain hoarders who bought them up quick and sells them on for profit. Don't fall for thinking the site is anything more than it looks, I'm guessing it's just there to keep buzz and maybe collect email address or something. Feel free anyone else to dig a little more if bored, but I need some sleep. Also, I never actually knew how much money was in domain names, it's pretty crazy sometimes.

BREAKTHROUGH!

p.s. I'm new.

I did an advanced google search, put instealthmode.com in the place that says Domain, and the only result you get says,

instealthmode.com/inactive

on that page it says, general inquiries
click it, it gives you the address:

inactive(AT)instealthmode.com

I emailed 5 minutes ago, no response yet...

-------------EDIT------------------

http://www.miketyson.com/

same as the whigfield thing

Using long strings of phrases I hoped would be unique to these sites, I created this search:

"in stealth mode" "If you have questions or need information"

which yielded a few new hits. Several hits are to AOLmusic pages, but if you copy the url visible in the results page. . .
www.giselebundchen.com
www.whigfield.com
www.jennifer-garner.com
www.miketyson.com
http://www.paganizonda.com/

also got hits, but no solid url for John Grisham and Joel Mowbray

Now to whois these. They look like annoying place-holder redirects, btu they all have the same format as the other, presumably, IG sites. I'm on the fence with this one.

ETA: not on the fence, really anymore. I think 6-sided is right. These hits are all suspiciously non-ARG-ie. whigfield is a swedish band. the rest are celebs of varying stature. I'm going to try to eamil Joel Mowbray. Someone seems to have bought that domain from the ISM folks, since it now redirects to www.townhall.com.

Good catch by the OP, though. Better to debunk a false trail than to miss a real one. Very Happy

I also did a whois.net on it,
it says instealthmode.com was created:

well here:

WHOIS information for: instealthmode.com:

[whois.crsnic.net]

Whois Server Version 2.0

Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.

Domain Name: INSTEALTHMODE.COM
Registrar: GO DADDY SOFTWARE, INC.
Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com
Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com
Name Server: SERVER1.INSTEALTHMODE.COM
Name Server: SERVER2.INSTEALTHMODE.COM
Status: clientDeleteProhibited
Status: clientRenewProhibited
Status: clientTransferProhibited
Status: clientUpdateProhibited
Updated Date: 30-apr-2007
Creation Date: 29-sep-1999
Expiration Date: 29-sep-2011

-------------
Whigfield.com and Miketyson.com have the same server thing as well:
Name Server: SERVER1.INSTEALTHMODE.COM
Name Server: SERVER2.INSTEALTHMODE.COM
--------------
and I found this: http://www.stealthmodepartners.com

http://www.aboutus.org/InStealthMode.com!
got him

yet this is problematic and not arg-eeish, the alexa link aaand the whois thing both say the sites been up since 1999. wtf?

indeed. Just searching for stories about this scam, I found several rants against this practice. He registers domains for hundreds of variations of famous names and businesses, redirects them ALL to his one page with contact info, then tries to sell people the rights to the domain. Here's just one example of a claim brought against them by Playboy's Hugh Hefner which was dismissed, and the domain was transferred for being held in "bad faith".

It seems odd (or at least clumsy) that the source code would say "ARG" and include a link to the wiki entry, rather than, as is more common, containing some IG clues. I think this is an effort to capitalize on ARGers web crawling for some non-ARG purpose (gasp. . . someone using ARGs for marketing and profit! Wink )
ETA: I'll leave it to someone a little more sage in the post count to declare it non-arg.

It's not that odd for a pre-game meta site to do something like that if they wish to attract players not familiar with the genre.

Common sense isn't directly related to post count, as your post testifies to.
I'll say no it's not an ARG.

Although I would like to also say that nowhere is it written that a domain name squatter can't be interested in ARG's and use his unsold domains for a game, so it is possible he did want to start one, just highly unlikely.
