Things of late are hinting almost conclusively that Hud is the cameraman. If that's the case your perspective is correct. I think there's reason enough for the label to apply in either case. What'll really nail this whole discussion of who's behind the camera would be clear if we knew for sure what Teddy looked like. If we find out that '11 dollar guy' is Teddy, then we'll have our answer. I think if there's any possibility that the cameraman isn't Hud, it almost has to be Teddy.
I am still inclined to think there's a business relationship between Rob and Teddy. That doesn't preclude Teddy from being either in front of or behind the camera.

enhanced trailer footage I played around with some filters in Final Cut and was able to pull the monster out a little bit. I posted it on YouTube...

That's called smoke.

Yes...you are correct. That does look like smoke. But keep in mind that it is also a digital effect. It is not just a random arrangement of elements. There is a reason why the smoke forms the shapes it does. Get it. It is your job to ask the question... Why does the smoke move the way it moves...form the shapes it forms, etc. If you dismiss the whole effect as just smoke, then you may miss something.

reagan88 I agree ...I've always thought you can make out something swiveling in the 1st shot down the street. Smoke does not swivel unless its in a vortex.

Well, to go against this "monster in the smoke" idea, I think the fact that the head of the SOL is flying through the smoke could cause some vortexing. Or perhaps the monster breathing causes vortexing in the smoke. Or maybe the monster has the power to cause smoke to vortex. Either one of these, or it's Voltron. I see something, but I don't think it's the monster.

You know, I don't know what to think. I just tried to get a better view of what everybody was looking at. One guy does say "I saw it..."
Here's a thought though. As I understand it, there was a smoke monster on "Lost." So it is not out of the realm of reason that JJ Abrams is using smoke in correlation with this monster.
But how, you ask, could he do this when we all know from the clues we've gathered that the monster comes from the deep sea and may or may not be related to a crab or a whale.
Ponder this... Let's assume that the monster was frozen and under the enormous pressure at the bottom of the ocean. Then a few factors change. The waters in our great oceans start warming (when handling something that was once cold but is now warm you might need an oven mitt), a drilling project has some sort of impact (perhaps the drilling represents the hammer clue), somehow a deep ocean bacteria responds to the warm waters and is eaten by the creatures of the deep (like cheese, maybe?). And our creature come to life!
But what would happen to a creature if it came to the surface, a creature who was made to live on the ocean floor under enormous pressure? It might start to lose cohesivness...start to unravel and roil in pain. It would not be a happy camper. Maybe what looks like smoke is really a creature that can't maintain it's composure, literally.
I am NOT saying that this is the one and only explaination. I am just trying to think outside of the box. This is fun...isn't it!

new version I just posted a newer version of the enhanced footage. I added the original (not enhanced) version and some closer views of the enhanced footage.

I really honestly think it's just billowing smoke being blown ahead of the destruction created by the creature. I think the most interesting thing is it's black smoke, not the grey or whitish smoke we saw when the likes of the Twin Towers collapsed. Black smoke like that is usually from fire, very poorly burning fires (chemically unbalanced fires create a lot of odd carbon molecules - soot). That much fire is pretty significant to achieve, so it makes me wonder - does our monster breathe fire? That'd certainly make it interesting in terms of a deep sea monster. It roars like an air breather, and if it breathes fire that's not something you usually consider aquatic.

Yeh, though it doesnt really seem to be much. Basically, its just a few frames where the smoke looks vaguely (and I stress the word) like a deformed t-rex. So I dont think it amounts to anything.
But well done trying anyway.

to quote a movie "its called scotoma the mids see's what it wants to"
if i said this is a volcano isnt that nifty you'd look at it and think nothing of it, but the second you read this statement; There is a face in the smoke, you will see nothing else but that.

The smoke might be SPECIFICALLY for the trailer only We had the "monster in the smoke" argument for several heated days on IMDB back in July immediately after the trailer's release...
here's my take.
1)If it was intended to be smoke from a fire...where's the fire? That smoke cloud is, what, 40 stories high? The whole damn sky would be lit up over Manhattan from a smoke cloud that big. Not even 9/11 belched out that much smoke -- only the dust/debris cloud after the Towers fell.
2) Here's a (to my mind) more likely explanation: the filmmakers DIGITALLY ADDED the smoke SPECIFICALLY for the trailer -- to hide the monster. Period. In other words, the original shot actually *contains* the monster (maybe; or maybe just a "placeholder" animation), and they used a (quite literal) smokescreen to obscure it from the audience.
If so, I expect we'll see that same shot again -- minus the smokescreen. And see the monster in its full glory.

Trailer Fireball direction When the fireballs come out of the explosion, they are heading straight towards the guy with the camera. But, then he turns around (to his right) almost 180 degrees, and fireballs hit in front of him, coming from a different angle. More than one explosion? More than one monster? How dat happen?
