Just another tidbit of info to throw out there.

When the new MUD was found on Kevin's site, there were already accounts created for "choraz" "Icculus" (the MUD guy), and "Y2KVeteran" -- but not Marie or any of the other sentries.

However, doing a "last Y2KVeteran" command in the MUD showed that y2k had never logged in to the MUD. So why did he have an account there? And no one else??

Kevin's site seems to be gone, so the MUD is gone too for now.

Do you think maybe she meant posting as different usernames using the same IP? (wishful thinking on my part that he's Exu or similar Twisted Evil )

I mean, don't a *lot* of people post from a couple different IP addresses? Isn't that sort of...normal? Unless we're trying to track down that some of them are from a different location than his usual, like, oh, from Los Angeles and Chapel Hill. ?

She probably does mean IP addresses. I'm sure, like most people, he has a main computer (possibly at home) and then another at work he may use and she's familiar with the IP addresses for each.

Dante, that's the first I knew of Y2K having an account on the MUD beforehand. That's pretty strange. I also think it's strange that Icculus had one there as well. He might have set it up for us on the SO site, but he supposedly had nothing to do with the one on Kevin's. Or did he?

Thanks sinyx, I now realize that I completely misread it. She's upset that he'd be lurking, not that he has multiple IPs. duh.

P.S. I was startled to see you(r lovely avatar) on boingboing the other day: http://www.boingboing.net/2007/07/10/philip_k_dick_blog_e.html Very Happy

P.P.S. And yes that's weirdly interesting about the MUD.

Something else I just noticed when I went back to look at some of Y2K's earlier posts on S.O.:

He apparently is still in contact with the mysterious "Peter" -- the former Sentry who left S.O. around 2003 on bad terms after arguing with Howard and Art. This quote is from around the time we were discovering the strange activity on the ports, but because it was *before* we found the hidden bits of text on Port 1031, at the time we didn't realize the significance of "Peter":
Quote:
Don't get alarmed, Bryce, but I've also used more private channels to call in some favors from old friends that don't really want to tip their hands. Some interesting ideas popping around.

First: Peter says "hey" and then points out to me what a sly old dog you are, Bryce. He suggests that since you obviously found the promisc node you were hoping to find, and since the promisc node isn't yours, that perhaps we should be mucho careful in revealing to those who own that node any information that reveals you have access to that. Peter thinks we might need it later.

Wow, very cool! PKD is one of my favorite authors and I really love the work Bob Pepper (the artist) did on those covers. Unfortunately, none of this will help me figure out what's going on here.

So, speaking of Peter. He's a pre-crash Sentry, attended Miskatonic, was a nosy, highbrow journalist for the Weekly World News (Is this a joke I didn't catch? WWN is a mock paper isn't it?), argued with Howard and Art a lot, and was a Adjunct Professor of Mathematics "into cryptography and the crackability and mathematical vulnerabilities of encryptation". No one really knows what he's doing now aside from Y2K, but Howard assumed "he was involved in some military project".

I'm realizing that our old BseeingU wiki is woefully out of date since we've been using the SO one. That's fine for most stuff, but not working for our 'files' on the characters themselves since we can't really have dossiers for them up on their own wiki. Searching through the SO forums for this stuff is beginning to get very time consuming. I'm sure I missed a bunch and mixed up a ton more.

So apparently Art is lurking in the shadows, as Mkaos has checked the IP. She has seen him online, and she's mighty upset.
What is Art up to?

Ps. Anyone else think Marie is sounding a little... Unstable here? Is she the next sentry to go cuckoo?

Oh, I hope not... Looking at her recent posts, I'd say she's angry and frustrated, rather than unstable. She seems to be functioning rather better than Jen, for example.

We should consider, too, that Art's IP showing up on the Outpost does not mean that Art is lurking.

And lastly, we've been assuming that the story will take the Sentries down one by one. What if it's not that simple? What if the "spooky action at a distance" is already working on the other Sentries?

Do we know when Kevin's system was "infected"? Was it post-Bryce, or not?

I'm not exactly what you would call computer saavy, but even I know how to use a proxy. Wouldn't a Arthur Lydney: Security Consultant, just as a matter of habit, surf anonymously?

You know, if we really wanted to draw Art into the open all we'd have to do is somehow mention that Y2K was a big hoax. Smile

hehe. I'm the one for that. Wink Not that Y2k was a big hoax at all, but that people were painting these doom and gloom scenarios the whole way through. I recently came across a popular paperback from 1998(?) that said how all the financial markets and the banking system were going to collapse in Y2K, and many pages along the same lines. The tone was that the world is going to fall with an occasional aside of "it may be possible to prevent this, but not likely." That was my problem with the whole Y2K panic scene.

The thing is I'm not around consistently enough to be posting on Sentry Outpost. But someone else could follow up on this idea. I think it is a good one.

Art just popped back up on S.O. again, placing all the blame for everything on Stu. I'm not sure I believe him, though.

So, I guess you managed to lure Art out of hiding. Him blaming Stu for everything doesn't seem too far fetched, but he isn't presenting any kind of evidence for it, and it ends up feeling more like a kid blaming his imaginary friend for stolen cookies than anything.. Not sure what I think about it at all actually.

Funny, he adresses Jen - pissed about her sharing his IM, but still not a word to Marie. He doesn't even try and put the blame on Stu. Razz

Yep, nice point.

But what could Jen's IM address be, and why is it her "dirty little secret," hmmm??

This certainly sheds a new light on the original New York Craigslist, which probably points to Jen. I thought she was digging something up. Is she trying to bury something instead?

Even here, in this cursed metropolis, you dig. When you get up in the morning, are you covered in dirt?
