hmmm....
i really like Marius's idea. perhaps all the clues left in the server are meant to point us to the floods home planet. that would make alot more sense. think about it, the local species on that planet must have adapted to be able to survive the flood. that said, heres my theory-


The Forerunners go-a-rompin' on the outer edge of the galaxy, just tieing up the loose ends of their galactic empire, scouting the last remaining planets that haven't been colonized. then, a lone ship, not too big, finds a small swampy planet on the outer galactic rim. it obviously has the right qualities to support life , since there is plenty of local fauna and flora, so they send down a small party, just to scout it out, maybe take a few samples, and mark it for later colonization. except, something goes horribly wrong. the brave explorers go along their business, not noticing a small bulbous form in their midst. perhapsit was just a chance find by a single mindless popcorn , perhaps the malevolent intent of an already preexisting and dominant Gravemind, who knows, but one or more of the explorers was infected. in a panic, or perhaps without even knowing it, they go back to their ship. and, as the flood inevitably does, it spreads. they fight bravely, but they are ill prepared, and don't even stand a chance. it spreads so fast thay don't even get off a warning to the rest of the forerunner. they then go on, using the previous captains' captured knowledge to pilot the ship onto another forerunner colony, or perhaps another ship. ether way they never see it coming- after all, they have no enemies left, and this ship, for all appearances is freindly. they either land, or dock, or whatever, and out comes the flood. Rinse. Repeat. the point is, that they were taken completely by surprise. for perhaps the first half of the war they didn't even know were the flood home world was. and, by the time they found it, it was too late. however, not so for us- the flood haven't spread yet, so we have a hope to go to the flood homeworld and find a cure to the flood from the native species.

I think the star images are supposed to tell us where the halos are, with Earth being in the center. Each position of the "arm" on the glyph points to the location, but finding out exactly where it is isn't easy.
