Except bedrock (being more dense)is the best conductor of tremors vs spaces with air (less dense, subways etc.) If the reverse were true, you could feel earthquakes in a helicopter hovering above ground.

I was referring to the structure itself, not the space created by it. They would criss-cross and form a latticed structure just below the surface, which should reverberate much the way rebar would reverberate through the structure if struck. It would conduct the tremors more effectively than if there were no subways, utility lines, service tunnels and subways below the ground. (Since the ground is less dense than the bedrock below it, some of the energy is lost. However, with rigid structures placed within it the energy can be more directly transferred through it.)

And maybe the tremors ruptured gas lines and such, causing the explosions?

I'm pretty sure that's part of the goal since inspiration came from JJ's son in a Japanese toy store Wink, which are pretty cool. I'm pretty stoked about it as well. Also another reason, I'm sure, we won't see it for a while because I'm sure they're still tweaking the design.

This is all very sketchy, but consider the following:

1. The possible "Chimera" find by "Guest" a few posts back...

2. Kayberry's recent post arguing that there should have been more impact tremors from foot-stomps (more than what were portrayed in the trailer),

3. There's a pic. in Hawk's myspace page that's got a dog's foot in view and a message from lily refers to the dog as "Griff". Possibly short for "Griffin" - a mythical beast that's part lion (ugh... don't even start) and part eagle (or any big bird o' prey, e.g., a Hawk). Sometimes the griffin is portrayed w/a serpent's tail, in which case it could also be called a "Chimera."

4. In the image on the "adios" shirt that Rob is wearing in several pics on myspace, there is a creature standing on the head of each skeleton that looks to be an amalgam of various other things - the head looks praying mantis...ish (see pic. where man is holding pinata on Rob's page), the torso looks bird-like, like a peacock or turkey (see pics. of rob and Hawk talking), and the tail/wings hanging down look almost leathery like batwings (in pic. where Rob is blindfolded and swinging at pinata).

All of these point to something that's an amalgam of different animals, and that can possibly fly (if not soar, at least short hops maybe). But, this is circumstantial evidence (at best).

Good theories!

Griff could also possibly be short for Hippogriff.

Regarding the chimera: while there is a traditional configuration, in practice a chimera is essentially just a monster that is a combination of real life animals. What might also be referred to religiously as an abomination ( <-- digression).

Note that on the Slusho site, you can mix 'flavors' together, represented by cartoony mechas, to create a new 'flavor' in the form of a much larger mecha that represents portions of whatever you chose. Just like a chimera. Compare with the 'sea land and air' discovery, and perhaps we're not looking at three monsters, but one chimera-like monster with three attributes..

 It's the monster!

Well...

actually it's just an origami Cthulu.

But scary nonetheless.

Hmmm
no clue but speculative

My opinion/speculative statement for now would be that the central figure of a Chimera or Griffyn, or that sort of mythological creature is still way to obvious for the likes of this film. I may be a huge literary "geek" lol but they just seem to "common" for Abrams to take the time to produce a film using them as a central figure. Mind you that opinion is just that. =)
I'm convinced it's not Godzilla, although when a co worker and I stumbled into this whole thing earlier today, I immediately got jacked up that Gamora was in the works. But then I thought better of it.
I loved that character as a kid. God bless that Turtle. =)

All the physics in the trailer, regarding that massive "explosion" are what is really intriguing me now. The SOL head could've been blown off into downtown, or could've been thrown by something, etc. But the explosion itself is very very mysterious. Something detonated somehow....and shot something else high into the air, everywhere...then they exploded secondary up in the sky. The only thing that comes to mind is that a gas depot was blown up, and barrels of crude were hurtled into the air and they then blew up themselves.

Anyway, back to the original topic here:
The explosion was caused it seems by whatever crawled into the city. But, due to the absence of the creature visibly I can't conclude that it was caused by a random destructive act.
The explosion looked very very controlled, as if it was a result of something beforehand.
Still thinking on that one.

PS: great site....and thanks for listening.

Drink Slusho!

peace.
=)

Didn't Abrams say something about the creature totally being original. So I'm pretty sure that we can rule out anything that we may know as monsters.

Probably right...

He did say it would be an american equivalent to Godzilla...

H.P. Lovecraft was an American author...

just sayin'.

Chtulhu is a bit goofy lookin' if depicted badly.

Roar

Has anyone been able to really analyze the roar? Slow it down and what have you? Cause there has to be something to it in terms of understanding the nature of it.
