True - to keep it in layman's terms, maybe they'll just say it's a monster mish-mash.

As far as Native American myths - the Eskimos have several about goddesses of the sea (for some reason, I find this idea intriguing) - Sedna, in particular:

According to one myth, Sedna, similar to a mermaid, was the daughter of the creator-god Anguta and his wife. She is said to have been so huge and hungry that she ate everything in her parents' home, and even gnawed off one of her father's arms as he slept. She also happens to be goddess of all the sea-going mammals - whales, etc.

There are also other Native sea myths, though most have to do with the turtle, and it's usually portrayed as a guardian or bearer of the earth.

RE: The Parasite:
With all the animal imagery, I can't help but think that the theme is that of man as the parasite. Maybe the monster is the revenge of nature (yes, I know, per Godzilla). Alternatively, maybe the parasite is like the Puppet Masters Symbiote, and alters and controls its hosts until it can form up with others of its kind. If the "one of us" quote did not come from a Slusho visitor, then it could explain a kind of hive-mind intelligence.

I don't think they would bury hints in the roar that you would have to have sound analyzing equipment to discover.

There's is definitely a woman's voice saying something before the roar.

But that you just have to listen to. To me it does sound like "the myth".

This is a *LOT* of speculation, but I'm going to say it anyway.

"The myth." What else sounds like "the myth"? They missed? Is it possible that the monster was attached to a meteor or something similar that crashed down? Perhaps "we"(America) knew about this meteor, and attempted to destroy it. "They missed." It crashes down, causing destruction, demolition, explosions- and clipped the head off the SOL. When it hit, it fragmented, and the pieces went everywhere, as is seen in the "fallout" debris landing near Rob & Co. When the meteor shattered, something alien was released. It continued the destruction out of fear.

The only problem I have with my theory- could a meteor large enough to carry the scale of monster we're looking for successfully crash down without decimating the city? Any other debunkers?

only thing I see wrong (aside from what you said) is that a meteor hitting the SOL wouldn't explain the claw marks

I feel that the monster never will be explained considering the mass hysteria from the character's perspectives (all pov).

I think that they will speculate throughout the movie, like we're currently speculating.

No, they will have to show the monster at some point, because JJ said he wanted something "insane and intense" you can't have that with nothing but speculation.

Again, this is a clue that Rob knows something. One of our buddy's has to be somehow on the inside to give us some back story on the creature.

FYI: RobKnows.com is OOG... Cool

As a slight addition to the 'chimera' anagram that was found, if you use all the letters from "Hammer", "Cheese", and "Mitt", the letters can be rearranged to form the phrase:

"Chimera meets them"

oooooohh!! I personally like the idea of a chimera.. Someone also mentioned something about a Nue, basically being a Japanese chimera, and bringer of misfortune. According to myth, the body of the Nue was buried, and (on this site: http://www.obakemono.com/obake/nue/ ) the body is placed in the southern region of Honshu, of course being where Ganu and folks are from. Perhaps Ganu found a piece of this mythical beast to use in his drinks?

Who knows, right? Wink

"blair witch project"

and an interesting point....maybe we will never know what the monster is? that would totally piss alot of people off, but it could still be intense because we are all waiting to see the monster but never do. :/

You still can't have the iconic American monster that JJ wants if you don't show it. Everyone would be like

"hey when is the next the monster that destroyed New York movie coming out?"

Another possibility: perhaps the attack doesn't last more than the night - what happens to the monster, I don't know, but it either dies or just goes away. The point is that the rest of the world wouldn't know what happened and why. Some people outside of NYC might not even believe the reports that it was a monster. But, even if that's not open to doubt, nobody (except maybe the Slusho! inner-circle... or not) will know where it came from and why it decided to attack NYC.

So, the cleanup begins amongst a firestorm of debate and official inquiries and scientific research, etc. etc. Perhaps the video we watch (which will make up the bulk of the movie) is just the "best" record of what happened yet found - simply b/c Rob & co. were just at the right/wrong places at the right/wrong times (and had a camera running).

That way, they don't have to show very much of the monster - they are free to limit our exposure to it, keep it mysterious, etc. I agree that an iconic monster will have to be seen somewhere, and at some point, but they can still keep it limited. And, obviously, that would also works well with an ARG devoted to uncovering what really happened on the night of 1-18-08 in NYC.

In fact, if this is the angle they take, then the movie will just be another piece of the ARG that's already started (albeit, slowly). That would make this a very revolutionary movie - it's really just part of an ARG (rather than the ARG being part of the movie), BUT it will still work as a movie all on it's own (for people who don't want to play the ARG) because of the Blair-Witch style: the less explained/revealed, the more realistic and, so, the more "insane and intense."

...that would also mean that the ARG will get started in full-force with the release of the movie. I think it will be well-underway by the time the movie comes out, but it will kick it up a notch b/c the movie will be packed with more clues and so more sites will be found, etc.

It's not January in the movie...

They are filming in the middle of summer and in LA.

There haven't been any signs of anyone dressed for winter.

I think the movie takes place in spring or fall.

1-8-08 is only the release date.

I think it'll be cool to get glimpses of the monster from hand held video... and from news helicopters and news crews. It may even be presented as kind of a retelling of what happend "overnight" that fateful day.

Maybe the monster comes on shore wreaks havoc gets beaten back by the military and then returns to the sea or space to lick its wounds.

It would be cool to get ground level shots from below as the helicopters come swooping in and shooting missles. To hear guns going off in the background but not really knowing where they're shooting from.

We'll be totally in the dark with the witnesses the whole time.

I'm not arguing that any of this is wrong, but what about the dates on the pictures on 1-18-08.com then? That suggests that this is happening in January.

Edit: Unless whoever owns the camera forgot to set the date properly! Wink

The trailer states that the temperature is 63 degrees. Yeah, it sometimes happens here (NYC) in January. Unless they were to dress according to what month it is as opposed to the weather, I doubt anyone will show up with their Snowsuits and Mittens (SLUSHO.jp clue, OMG).

The photos are not the movie...

They're just part of the teaser site.

Sure there a freaky days when the weather is warm. but generally mid january is cold... especially at night.

Granted, but they are definitely part of the same event. You can't say the pictures are from January but the movie is from July.
