Re: the bloop

okay the bloop that is heard in slushomovie.org which i know is oog sounds exacvtly like the bloop that you hear in the mix flavor if you just turn the volume up and leave the page alone........erie but could reinforce
the fact that it came from underwater

edit:how many of you think it came from underwater........or...from the SOL...........or from a different place.

I haven't heard it, personally. I know that there's some thought about the bloop being connected, I mean, hey, why not? Can you capture the audio from the slusho site and post it?

Good thought- I just think it'd be too small for the magnitude of the damage we're seeing.

OK, another wild speculation in 3, 2, 1...

I was thinking, why would the monster attack the SOL's head, but leave the rest of the statue intact? If this is a lower-intelligence beast (as opposed to some intelligent alien monster), why attack the head?
The Statue of Liberty has 3 observation decks, the lower observation deck (I don't know where it is on the statue), the "crown" observation deck, and the "torch" observation deck, closed in 1916.

Imagine this scene:

It's a very nice 62 degrees on Friday, January 18th, 2008. People are out and about. Tourists flock to the city's attractions, taking advantage of the unusually warm weather.
The SOL crown observation deck is flooded with tourists, taking in the beautiful Manhattan skyline.

But then, something stirs in the bay. A massive creature rises from the water, followed by an ear shattering, glass braking, hysteria provoking roar (possibly the "I'm here" roar). Now comes the part that I can't theorize about. It's the part that ultimately leads to the huge downtown explosion, and roar number 2 (anger roar?). Instantly, the crowd on the SOL's observation deck, fueled by thoughts of Youtube fame, and Hard Copy credits, start filming and flashing away. All this strobing is getting our monster quite angry. And what does a huge monster do when a fist sized object flashes annoying lights at it while it's on a rampage (no pun intended)? It picks it up and chucks it as far as it can (possibly while emitting roar number 3 - another rage roar?).

This could explain why there are at least 2 very distinct roars, and also why a monster, which is basically a dumb animal which was mutated/genetically engineered/presumed extinct, would attack one part of the statue (arguably the most meaningful part for us humans), and leave the rest alone.

Macrocheira kaempferi

The monster is a gigantic mutant Japanese Spider Crab (Macrocheira kaempferi).

A picture of one can be found here:

Awesome theory . . with a single flaw . . .

Is the SOL open for tourists past midnight?

What if the SOL crown has a slusho machine for the thirsty tourist stair climbers and it therefore contains the food the beast needs? (Ie. secret ingredient)

The last time I was there, you can't get to the crown and it wasn't opened past midnight( I went early in the morning but I think it shuts down before dark.)

I don't see why the movie can't take artistic license here, as usually shots of Statue of Liberty in any movie are used for its symbolic power.

Exactly. Coming up with an excuse to have the SOL open past midnight is easy. Let me try:

Picture a headline:
"NYC landmarks open all night as the [insert name] comet passes over earth for first time in 30,000 years."
That could also be the trigger for our monster's awakening. However, that really is a Lovecraftian thing - comets awakening monsters (namely, Cthulu). So I doubt that will be the actual thing, but you catch my drift. And thanks.

You know, I know this has been done to death, but what makes people so sure that this monster is "original?" I started questioning this after rereading over Abram's speech at Comicon and I don't hear the mention of an original monster, just "we need out own monster, like we need a monster movie"

Now, that may be interpreted as original, our own monster to boast about, or it could mean that Cthulhu is a possibility.

I'm expecting to be ravaged by a lot of people for even stating that, but please, try to keep an open mind and try to explain why it has to be interpreted as original.

Well, at least I wasn't stupid enough to think it was Godzilla or Voltron, give me that much credit at least :/

The notion that Abrams said the word, "original" is the most frequent bit of disinformation on this entire board. It's become a religious cult here, to think he did say that, which has a kind of ironic quality about it.

Expect the moronic, hysteric rodeo clown to appear any second...

Yes, actually it is. Before AICN said it wasn't and Abrams seemed to imply it's original, it was a very decent guess.

I think I'd pay to see that on IMAX!

Sorry - watched Holy Grail again last night (w/Shakespearean subtitles!), and that scene where the knights are all trying to decipher the message on the wall of the Cave of Caerbannog took on a whole new meaning - it was all so oddly familiar this time around... Laughing

I just saw that too, Mephisto - it can't be legit. The email in that 1-18-08news.com report must have been a hoax. The mass quantities of slusho at the party theory is inane. And the fireball face?!

"This bush league psyche-out stuff. Laughable, man - ha ha!"

I know you've got people checking these forums, J.J. Abrams, so please, for the love of God, don't let that report be true.

Check out Kayberry's recent post on the main TRAILHEAD thread "1-18-08: Possible new arg/puzzle?" [page 343].
