there's a great analysis of the explosion elsewhere on this forum that leads one to the conclusion that the explosion may have originated underground.

also, a careful analysis of where the explosion occurs seems to indicate that it occurs near (or at) the WTC site.

as for what could have caused it? who knows. what could cause that kind of an explosion? my inclination was natural gas pipelines underground or something.

Here is the best explanation I've seen about the explosion:

Just noticed...

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but...

Just watched the HD Trailer. The SoL Head is definitely "thrown" from within the smoke cloud, and seemingly upward to hit the building.

The monster is definitely smaller than a very tall building.

I noticed that as well. If you look closely, the "small cloud" resembles a monster. Could be a coincidence. But the monster doesn't have to be that small, the monster could just be farther away.

The monster may have been carrying the SoL head around for some time, as they SoL is nowhere near the Woolworth building, and is not filled with explosive materials. Maybe it stepped on/kicked something that exploded on his journey from the SoL, and threw the head up in surprise.

It seems odd that the monster would throw the head up - why not throw it down, where all the people are?

Like a football

If you're going for distance you would naturally throw it in an arc like a football... the monster is trying to hit the people who are at a distance and running from it.

or he's just pissed...got tossed outta the house by mrs. monster for staying out late, drinkin' w/ his buddy's...saw a 100' woman statue, and took her head off...tossed it as far away from himself as he could...reminded him too much of that wench that kicked him outta the house...that he worked so hard to provide...

anybody that has been married/divorced, will confirm this theory for me. Foily!
