Atten Mod Squad!
Questions

would it help (yet) to throw a lockdown on the 500page thread? Every other post is one that flat out states they're not reading through all that (and I can't blame them ;-p) and that's a large reason why there's so much repetition (not that this is a newsflash).

What's the word on moving the 1-18/slusho to the potential side of the fence? Despite the confusion, it does reek of arg potential. Abrams email verifying there's more we've not found, the slusho site and also the story with at least one character (satoshi), and the ones from the trailer. Just because we've not officially rooted out a factual puzzle it doesn't mean this isn't arg and wasn't intended to be....it could be we're too hungry and they're really friggin clever this time Razz C'mon, it's pretty much common knowledge established that Abrams is ArgBoy. Twas a clever bone he tossed us...

Is it cool to add a few more category threads otherwise - like one specifically for the photos on the 1-18 site, one specifically for trailer analysis, one specifically for potential plots/ "what monster is this" sort of thing, etc. just to help add some organization here so we can direct people (on the final post of the huge thread) which way to go for what they're focused on...and lock the other one?

Timeline

Has anyone managed to get a timeline going? Or do you (anyone) have any reference points you jotted down that would be helpful in compiling one? Just wondering. I haven't seen any so far....thought I'd ask.

We should probably work on something tho....before the *actual* trails get too far into things.

Curious Lines

FTR, I just added a copy of the transcript on page 1 below the 1-18 whois links....for reference.

My favorite one in the transcript of course would have to be Rob's comeback: "I don't know, I'm like your main dude."

Anyway, some lines seemed a little curious...and a possible explanation to justify the reaction/response and comments made

Clueless chick: What is this for?

Interesting. Been raised before. At best she seems out of the loop - or she could just be tanked. ;-p

Unseen Cameraguy: It's for Rob. Say something to him before he leaves.

This one seems to suggest that at some point the guy intended to hand it off to Rob for later viewing. Obvious memento, but I'm looking at it in terms of Blair Witch angle, and the camera footage found later. At any rate, it's clear now he's leaving and this is likely his going away party.

Brunette chick: Rob, have fun in Japan.
So we know he's leaving for Japan.

Suit guy: You owe me eleven dollars.

Interesting comment. In fun, but a debt nonetheless. His tone hit me more like the backstory on that was Rob lost a bet somewhere. Rob being in the suit and the rest of the elements suggests he's not a jobless brokedikloser who ran outta gas and bummed money from his buddy. So I think it's about a cheapo bet on something silly OR, these two are longer time friends and he's talking about some silly debt from 5th grade or something. He's in it twice with two specific lines.

Cap guy: How are you gonna survive without Rob, he's like your main dude.

Face value referring to cameraguy's friendship with Rob, but in light of 'monster thing' and slusho, it could be a veiled clue of foreboding, something a little more literal...how will he survive without Rob, or that on some level Rob might be responsible for whether cameraguy lives or dies. I only note it in this context because all the stuff in the trailer is bait....and this question seems to have a foreboding tone to it in light of what happens later.

Slusho shirt guy: Think we can see something from the roof?

Afro guy: ...it was shaking everywhere, man...it was like tremors.

Unseen (camera?) guy: Looks like you should've left town a little bit earlier.

Unseen (camera?) guy: What animal sounds like that?

Three different things going on here that are curious - 3 perspectives.

Slusho and afro guys' lines seem like they're focused more on the possibility an earthquake happened. What's a little curious is that afro guy seems to be referring to something shaking/tremors and isn't part of this group, or was somewhere else and he and his group went to the roof also and were talking about it. Recall, they're already up there gathered when Rob and co go up. What seems a little screwy to me is that in light of hearing that roaring noise, I'd think earthquake would come in second on WTF priority list. The alternative is that so far they could be assuming the roaring sound was earthquake sound...it's NY, quakes aren't a common thing so like some people have no idea that a tornado sounds like a Hoover bullet train, they just initially figured the sound came with the quake.

Unseen guy seems to be drawing back to the chick who said it sounded like an animal, and he's trying to process that in light of it being an earthquake. That's the only thing I can think of that would explain some of them not all that freaked out while others are wigging, is because they initially think this was a quake that produced the sound, has some reasonable explanation and since they weren't directly in a quake, they're still in "bystander" mode and gonna check it out on the roof.

That would, honestly, explain why they don't appear to be reacting realistically to a monster - they don't yet realize there's gonna be one. They're being rational about it - earthquake, like the news told them.

Then comes cameraguy (presumably it's him) making the left town comment. It does make more sense if they're all thinking it's a quake, and if so then it would reasonably disrupt the departure...or that the quake would likely end up causing chaos in the street making it hard to even get to an airport...kinda in the same vein as unexpected blizzard and "looks like you shouldda left town a little bit earlier"....

Otherwise you have 3 different people with 3 whacked perspectives of the same event...one thinks it's a quake, one thinks it's an animal, and one is a smartass insensitive ass with an inability to relate to the event.

Unseen Female: What is it! Is it coming this way!?
Unseen Male: I saw it, it's alive, it's huge!

Now they're just getting to the street, so apparently those down below have already seen something that the others didn't see from the roof. There's an established reference that an "it" is moving and that whatever "it" was, it wouldn't ordinarily be considered alive...either an inanimate object or something considered already dead. That comment is screwy to say "it's alive"....well what the hell else would it be? The only real context that fits is if the "it" is something people wouldn't gather immediately was alive.

Unseen Male: Go...anybody seen Jason, has anyone seen Jason!

I don't think Jason is the cameraguy because we're still viewing via the camera what's happening on the street. The reasons I lean toward slusho shirt guy being Jason is because of the casualwear, the shirt itself, his suggestion to go to the roof seemed like he had more of a comfort zone with the location they're in, and because earlier during the party, he's dancing with the strappy dress chick and later, she's out front with Rob asking where Jason in. Also because slusho guy is the one feeding Rob a drink....the guy's got his 15 minutes seconds and seems to be a more central character with Rob.

Rob's awesome chick - girl pal
Have fun in Japan chick - maternal friend and closer to Rob than blonde chick
Shirt guy - long time bud, clownish kinda tie
cap guy - perceptive exploitation friend, the one who asks the Question and makes them have to think
Cameraguy - Rob's long time buddy OR likely a coworker/partner who got too used to Rob being able to bring up the rear, handle issues, etc. and with Rob leaving, all the responsibility will be on him and he's not entirely prepared.

I don't buy the "It's alive!" thing at all.

It's just the guy, and the trailer's, way of telling us we're dealing with a giant monster without saying "giant monster." Instead of an eathquake or a terrorist bombing.

I do like the analysis of the "How are you going to survive without Rob?" line. That's pretty hot.

There are far more natural ways of doing it than saying "It's alive!" I think. It seems stilted, you know?

Eh, it's a movie trailer. I mean, what are the alternatives, really? "It's a giant monster!" sounds pretty dumb. "It's a giant tentacled monstrosity/fish/robotic lion/giant enemy crab!" is just as bad. What would you say? And would it sound ridiculous in a movie trailer?

Let's say it's your basic ambulatory beastie of homongous size. Smile

"I saw it! It's Huge!"
"It's moving! It's huge!"

Better yet, don't say anything about it other than the size. "MY God! It's huge!" works really well and sounds natural.

It could be worse:

It could be worse:

"I saw it! It's alive...well, I think it's alive, it was moving...it didn't look like a robot, but there was poor lighting and I was distracted by the fire and lights...maybe it was a lion, but it looked to me more like a tentacled, octopus thingy, it actually looked a little like a lizard or turtle...you know, maybe it was a chimera with parts from all of those things...oh yeah, and it's HUGE!"

Would you prefer that?

the fact that "its alive" was even uttered points to the idea that it is most likely something that would normally be viewed as inanimate. you would only yell "its alive" to describe something that shouldnt be "alive" ( like a statue perhaps) or something that was previously alive that you assumed was dead. which could point to the idea of some members of the party previously experiencing such a thing.

or it could just be one of those things you yell when you dont know what else to say.

btw i'm new here. pleased to meet you all.
