Help Colby
How can we spot the possessed?

Uberg33k wrote:
One thing I would correct our angry Buddist friend on is doubting about getting Gabriel and Colby in direct contact. You forget that Gabriel knew of Colby before we told either of each other's existance. This to me actually supports the theory that they're laying a trap out in Indiana. If Gabriel needed help, he would have asked for it. When you combine that with his mom's fall and Chet's sudden disappearance/reappearance, it seems something is rotten in Unton. I'm thinking that Chet dropping off the radar for a few days then reappearing might be a sign he's been "converted".

youre right thats why Gabriel abd Chet were in the center of the web in Christines dream. Spiders like angri said. This is all making alot more sense now.

We have a problem right now though. We have pledged to help Colby right? well colby plans on going to Unton. What can we do to help him? Im going to try writing Michael again to see what he knows. Im praying he will answer this time. What should we tell Colby?

Im wondering if there is any way to positively spot a "possessed" person. I have asked the agent about this with still no reply. If we can spot a possessed person, it would give colby a huge advantage in his trip to Unton. I suggest some more of you try contacting Michael or the Agent with the same question... this may be Colbys only hope. Otherwiise, with his naive nature he will get caught in that web the second he steps into town.

BTW. if the web in Christines dream is a symbol for the trap set by Gabriel then what caused it to start burning in one of her latest dreams? Maybe this is a clue to help Colby....

any thoughts?

EDIT: err scratch that writing michael idea. we dont even have his addy. I coulda sworn I mailed him before too... so many people so little time.

Differences of opinion.

I just like throwing my thoughts out there to see if they stick to anybody else's. If not, maybe the contact will change mine.

I understand the "cautious" route that we, including myself, have suggeested. However, here's some new arguments against it. If you disagree could you try to respond directly to the arguments? I'll even number them.

Why are we so concerned with what Gabriel might not want and not with what Colby definitely wants?

1. Gabriel has never stated that he doesn't want us to give Colby his contact info. For some reason, even though Colby has told us that he wants it, we prefer to withhold it because we think Gabriel would prefer it that way. Put simply, Gabriel has said nothing. Colby has asked for it.

2. The actions of these two should be considered as well. Colby is interested in being in love and driving across the country to help people that he doesn't know. Gabriel is pushy with his friends, us, and possibly his family. He's also actively keeping us in the dark. While Gabriel doesn't trust anyone, Colby is putting a great deal of trust into us. Strange that we don't return it. Maybe we've been "compromised"?

3. Finally, Gabriel is located in an area where Aliens and "possessions" seem to now be common. His "integrity" has already been questioned. On the other hand, Colby is removed from such dangers and is even having dreams that seem to be warning against events in Indiana.

4. Gabriel, who actually deserves our trust less than Colby, has all the information. He knows what's happening in Unton and who Colby is. However, Colby has no idea what's happening in Unton, who Gabriel is, or what his motivations are. Considering the fact that Colby is going to drive to Unton, it's odd that we are prefering and keeping it that way.

1. We've been in contact with Gabriel. The only thing that he's done is "test" us. Even after passing the tests, he doesn't seem interested in sharing information or asking for help. People in trouble will look for help. He may be cautious, but if he really wanted our help, human nature would have him looking for reasons to trust us, not more reason to withhold from us. Why should we concentrate on helping someone who obviously isn't interested? Even if this reason doesn't hold up in your mind, think of this : have we really even heard much out of Gabriel lately? I can't recall him responding to email or being on IM lately.

2. I'm not sure what the point here is. You're saying Colby might have pulled the wool over our eyes? Possibly, but he's also the only one seemingly interested in help or driving the story forward. Colby it seems bound and determined to press forward no matter what we say, rather than us pushing him to do it.

3. True. However, what are we going to do if Colby stays in New Jersey? As previously mentioned, Gabriel doesn't seem very open to assistance or sharing information. Michael doesn't seem to know much. I suppose we could wait and see for a while, but I get the feeling that all we would get is more Colby dreams out of it. Chet might be a decent conduit, but he's never appeared online.

4. Once again, I don't think its odd from a story standpoint. Unless someone can get Gabriel/Michael to start communicating more frequently and allowing us to pass more information/make a judgement for Colby on if he should go or not, we don't have much of a choice. The PMs have been driving the story this way since we first found out Gabriel was related to Chet. I don't think its a matter *if* Colby should go, merely a matter of *when* he should go and how prepared can we make him.

wow you guys should be therapists with all this psychoanalyzing...lol

im kidding this is all really insightful and it really helps us determine where each character is coming from and their possible motives.

the one thing it does look like we are all in agreement on is that we need to find some way to send Colby to Unton armed with information.

Unless he has another prophetic dream, I think we need to pull some weight and get him some info that could help him survive this mess.

This may be obvious, but I think the PM does not want Colby to be able to contact Gabriel at this point. Colby (or Christine, or maybe both) said that no one would give up Gabriels contact info. That's not true, I emailed him with it as soon as I found out about the Prophecy trailhead. So they must be intentionally driving the story this way. I didn't even think about it being an issue when I emailed, so I guess it's a good thing the PM is handling it this way, so all of you don't beat me up... Wink

Admittedly, my speculation is just that. With my schedule and the times that the events of most ARGs happen, I tend to be limited to thinking, sharing, and debating.

I agree. I don't think he wants our help and I don't intend, at this point, to give him any. It seems more likely that he wants to use us.

Gabriel first contacted us and dangled a carrot in our face. "Something strange has happened. Would you like to know more?" Yes. "Jump through some hoops to show me I can trust and use you". Ok.

My view about giving Gabriel's contact info to Colby is that we would be helping Colby, not Gabriel. Have I been misunderstanding your point this whole time? Do you think that giving the info to Colby would be helping Gabriel? Shocked

Here I was simply taking them at face value. Based on what we know, Colby is trustworthy and likeable. And to reiterate your point, he is driving the story forward and doesn't need us to push him to do it.

My point was that he said that he would like to contact Gabriel and we denied him accesss. Being the only character who has shown both openness and need, I find it odd to not offer when he asks.

My fault. I was trying to add another point to my "Trust Colby over Gabriel campaign". I don't want Colby to stay. As a matter of fact I'd like to figure out how long it should take, start the countdown when he leaves, and take the "arrival time" off from work.

Once again, I wholeheartedly want him to go. The sooner the better. As I see it though, if it turns into a Colby vs. Gabriel situation, Gabriel is holding all the cards. I feel like we could have slipped one under the table to Colby but were afraid that Gabriel would find out. However my " Shocked " above might have just changed that.

Bingo! Colby only has everything to lose if he leaves town. What does he gain? He gets to know why he's having odd dreams? Which would you rather do stay in town and "spend the night" with your hot new girlfriend or drive out to the middle of nowhere where there are aliens and the US Army? Clearly he has everything to lose. If you were trapped in the middle of the situation and you heard that some civilian was coming out to visit you because he had a weird dream, what would you do? Most decent people would beg and plead for them to stay away or say something along the lines of "Bring guns. BIG GUNS!". Gabriel does nothing. So either he's just the kind of person that doesn't care about others (in which case we shouldn't trust him), or he benefits from Colby stumbling blindly into town (ie TRAP!). Gabriel benefits in some way that isn't rescuing from Colby coming to town. That says to me that keeping Gabriel away from Colby is probably a good idea right now.

I'm enjoying the psychoanalyzing too Smile

But I have a boring question - am unclear as to whether anyone's received a reply after e-mailing pathwaytothestarsSPLATgmail.com about the chosen?

So far, nothing. However, we didn't find that until the last round of updates from the PMs. I just don't think anyone running the PM side has been online to update/answer any submissions yet.

Thanks - thought not Smile

And to continue on the one point I seem to have. Colby starting blogging on the date of the blue moon is suspicious and I have yet to trust him or Christine. (In the words of an excellent judge of character "I wouldn't be their friend").

Hmmm. Maybe we should also keep in mind that if this all were a trap, any information given to us by the predators could have been intentional. What if they knew you were in contact, or would come into contact with the prey, and fed you pieces of information so that you would in turn feed it to the prey. The prey would then attempt to use said information, leading him straight into the trap.

Or perhaps I am simply far too paranoid to get into ARGing. :] haha.
I just can't help it, though... I looked through all the information and stuff... Something just isn't sitting right with me, either.

I will have to take a step back and digest the information a little more before I make an official decision.

And MAYBE make an actual account. Haha. I've been lurking these forums for months, playing out ARGs by myself. I think its about time. :]

I am 100% behind you on this.

Unless something changes (and you know it will), I think that once Gabriel gets his "secret" communications going, we should keep Colby in the loop. Even if Gabriel doesn't trust him. Of course that would depend on the current situation.

Edit: Reference the post above this. How sneaky could the PMs of this be? Is this a Frank Herbert ARG? Plans within plans within plans...

It actually seems that you're perfect for ARGing.

Maybe it's the real world you're too paranoid for. Wink

You could be very right. If that is so, what exactly would we do next though? We aren't really being given the option by the PMs to do anything but let Colby go to Indiana. Regardless of whom is on whom's side, its going to happen so we've just got to be observant and cautious for all parties at this point.

Being paranoid is a good thing. A bigger problem for ARG players is they take one little piece of info and try to extrapolate too much from it without taking into consideration all other possibilities. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to choke someone for a "OMG look what I found on Google" post that obviously has little or nothing to do with the game. Its just someone has talked themselves into believing it. Stay paranoid and keep thinking about all the things we've been given and you'll do great.
