[META] ARG or not, what is our goal?

This is just to back up some. I had one of these moments with the Ethan Haas deal when it was first posted as related and a few pages of checking that out and getting into it, the question began to solidify of how is this even related.

I'm having another of those moments with slusho - only not about its relation.

First, I will say that I have not lost sight of the possibility that neither site was completely ready for launch before it was discovered. I have some issues with that but keep an open mind that it very well could be a case that they hadn't anticipated anybody actually finding slusho at all during July....maybe this trailer they're supposed to come out with in mid August was the one that would "officially" launch whatever game they got on the table and this is why there's nothing to 1-18 but the photo timeline and why 3 of the 6 links on slusho aren't up, and why no replies from Satoshi and/or Henry Kelvin...and they figure that they had the rest of July to get it up and ready, but simply underestimated the argonauts ripping that open in what, 3 days? Razz

(I sooooo hate to see what Satoshi's inbox looks like! heh)

That being said, if it is ready as it is, and there are clues on slusho as have been reported as coming from Abrams or "sources"...then let's back up some and ask the obvious question.

Clues to what, exactly?

What the hell are we even looking for?

If it's ready to go, why doesn't Satoshi reply?
If it's ready to go, and the consensus seems to be that whatever the clues are they're in history, then what does it yield.

I get it that we'll figure that out when we figure out the clues but I mean in a more immediate sense. Clues to what?

A website?

A person?

A company?

Any of the 1-18 characters?

How exactly do we search (and expect an actual hit) for a secret ingredient found at the bottom of the sea, under amazing pressure and in extreme cold that must be served in a near frozen state?

How the hell do you sum that up?

We don't even know what we're looking for to get an idea what clues to be rooting out...and no real way to validate them anyway.

Searching for the characters yields squat. The location yields squat, and anything to do with the ingredients or climate leads to actual OOG information on a lot of really neat scientific stuff but doesn't apply here.

Is there some cultural thing about whale legends for the Japanese that might tell this same story? Or any culture for that matter?

Should we be looking for IG "news" stories about some famous oceanographer whose mother was lost at sea? Is there some other kid story that is similar to this?

And let's say there is. Let's say that we all overlooked "the boy and his whale' from childhood and it's the same story.

Then what?

What are we looking for, clues to what?

Names, dates, sites, locations?

We'll know it when we find it isn't really helpful either.

Has anyone stopped and asked what we should be looking for clues for? Or should we maybe just back up and wait til the new trailer on the assumption surely that one will be the official bone with meat on it that points in a direction we can actually resolve somewhere specific?

God knows I've been trying. I think I've posted something to that effect a half-dozen times in the past four days.

You're right about the problem. We know that we're looking for clues, but we don't know what those clues are for. We don't have any real pointer to where the clue may be or what it may look like. It's left us going on rabbit hunts with plenty of people nodding and saying "hmmmm" because at this point you can make a case to say that we have to consider any clue no matter how tenuous or obscure.

What we need is one big pointer - something that doesn't necessarily give away the farm but points us toward a who or a what.

An example. When The Beast - the ARG that Started It All - began, the first clue was a name and a job title that showed up in a movie trailer. What got folks' attention was the job title, "Sentient Machine Therapist". it made some people sit up and say "What the hell is that"? They went to Google, looked up her name, and found a couple web sites that led to the Big Mystery. Further review of the trailer revealed a couple smaller clues that helped solve a couple more mysteries.

None of that would have gotten started without that First Big Clue - the one that stood out. We don't have that yet and until we get it, I'm not sure how we're going to move forward.

I agree. Perhaps no ARG?

It's certainly possible.

It *feels* like an ARG, though. The Slusho site has a bunch of ARG-type elements in it and so does the trailer. It feels to me like we got ahead of the folks in charge and looked at some stuff before they were completely ready. The changes we've seen to the Slusho site indicate, to me at least, that they're going back and cleaning up some mistakes they made because we got there before they were ready.

What frustrates me is that, if that's the case, they've not attempted to slow us down. In fact, subsequent information we've gotten is that there is more to find and that they want us to find it, but they've given us no realistic way to do that.

With the exception of the 'this feels ARG' part(cuz Ive never done one), everyhitng you said mirrors my thoughts exactly. I hadnt posted them, but I too feel 'What if they werent as ready as we were?' Or even, 'What if he hadnt planned an ARG until the hype?' Most likely, not the latter. But all things considered, we should focus on the one site that he says tells us we found. Back to the pics, times and people (number of people, what they do etc) for 'new' trails perhaps. Assuming he's ready for us of course. Maybe the new sites arent close to ready which is why we only have 3 links avail on slusho.jp.

It strikes me as strange that anything would be up (for example on slusho.jp) at all if things weren't ready--you don't just put things up bit by bit, you prepare it all offline and upload it all at once when you are all set.

It feels like an ARG to me too. But I think more pieces need to come to light. Like with the Sublymonal ads during the Lost Experience, we will start getting more pieces soon.

My prediction if this follows suit with TLE is a tv ad for Slusho! with either a website, a person, a phone number, something, anything at the end of it. Only for the 1 in 10000 people who will see the ad and say, "HOLY CRAP!!!" and run to their computer.

I also think the parent company of Slusho! will become important. And I still think it will be a Swiss company based on the cheese.

Also, coming soon this month will be the real title of the movie. The 25th I think? That will be helpful.

I think we just need to be patient.

I'm a right-brain, "plan" type of guy, so my suggestion would be to come up with a to-do list. Maybe we can list out everything we think is worth trying, on every site, every element, etc. There seem to be a lot people who are doing work that's already been done. I'd be glad to put something together if people want to throw out some suggestions. I could post an update every day. Then, we'll have in front of us a concise list of what has and has not been tried, the status, etc. Personally, I believe we are awaiting further info from the PMs, but at least this way we can get organized.

I suggest a format:

[Site (1-18-08, slusho.jp)]
[Element (image, .swf, audio, whois, html, etc.)]
[What to try? (desteg, morse code, binary, match with some other element, etc.)]
[Current Status (not attempted, in progress, completed)]
[By (member name)]
[Results (nothing, possible link, definite link, etc.)]

This is just a loose framework, but jeez, *anything* is better than what is scattered across the other threads.

Also, do keep in mind that this sort of thing is not a new experience for them. They did the Lost ARG, and are running side by side with The Transformers that had one too.

Nowdays, for blockbusters, it almost feels like people *expect* an ARG. I mean, such a movie clouded in mystery... there has to be something more outside of the movie.

The fact that it started six months early... well... who knows?

For those that have done it: what's the history of the Transformers ARG? When did it start? How long did it last? What was the "goal" there?

For that matter, what was the goal in the Lost ARG?

Forgive me... this is my first game like this.

Tina, I agree with you analysis, but just one thing:

I think it's good and right to keep checking out clues, as long as they follow the guidelines of logic, and don't just present wacky theories.
During my not pr0n days, I learned that no clue was too flimsy, no lead too weak. No option was worth overlooking. The number of times the answer came to me after hours of me saying: "This is leading me nowhere."

So, patience and perseverance.

 WTF

Okay, now I know I've been spending far too much time on here but to the best of my knowledge I've not been sleep posting.

I remember posting this as a post on a thread. I do not for the life of me remember making a whole thread for this.

Did I miss a memo here? Somebody fill me in.

Our humble mod came in here and edited a few threads for subject matter and moved some stuff around.

And we know you haven't been sleep posting, because the cameras on you would show us that.

That reeeeally scared the hell out of me, I just want you all to know that. Cause I KNOW I posted it on a yellow (cream?) part and I wasn't even online when this was posted.

But why it got me was that for the obsessive crap with the slusho zoom, I had a warped dream about it - but that one guy that was in Accepted and is in the new Die Hard, Justin something - that guy was in it and he kept running around going "Slusho zoooooooooooom" and I was laughing, asking him WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? TELL ME! And he just laughed and kept on going "Slusho Zooooooooom"

So when I sign in to UF this afternoon and check out the updates, you can imagine my shock when I see I've posted this as a new thread when I KNOW damn well I didn't. I had that exquisite ARG moment there when reality and unreality most certainly did blur and I had to sit here a sec on Rewind to be sure....and wondered, since it's "obviously" started by me, if maybe I really wasn't asleep after all....and this one got up in me.

Shocked

Damn you JJ! Damn you and your slusho zoom!

Well that clears up the explosion in the distance and the roaring.

JJ handed off the mystery plot and forgot to mention the point of slusho zoom....and that guy's head exploded.
