[info][spec] Iris, sparta and helen of troy

Hey just came across some info from some books on Greek Mythology i had lying around ( geek.)

anywayyy

in myth ( possibly reality ) the trojan war was started over the love of helen ( face that launched a thousand ships yadda yadda)

so paris of troy on his 10th day in Mycenea told helen about his love and they ran away to troy and got married without telling menelaus who was king in sparta cause he was married to helen or atleast sleeping with her ( or something not too sure but they were involved in some way)

but the interesting part is they managed to escape to troy without him knowing but he found out when Iris, messenger of the gods, took the news to him

now i would usually just leave this at that but

Sparta then launched the war against the trojans

using spartan soldiers

Master cheif - spartan

troy - fortress

i'm sure there something in that feel free to spec on it

( sorry if this is trout )

Yep, spartans are named after spartans. Probally because their elite super soldiers like the ancient spartans.
Personally, i dont think its relevant. But weve known Bungie has looked into Spartan history since we first heard Master Chief was a spartan class warrior. Maybe we should look for a glyph in 300? Razz

Yeah, if you want you should look into it more. I think at this point we all have our own corners with our own little projects. I think its a waiting game as of now. But you never know.

OT: I had a dream of Server 3 unlocking last night, shows you how much im obsessed with this ARG, hehe

It's possible that there's a connection here. However it's worth noting, the Sparta of Menelaus wasn't the Sparta of Leonidas. The Sparta mentioned in the Illiad and Odyssey bears very few similarities (as I remember) to the historical Sparta. (For example in Homer's works, Sparta has only one king, whereas historically it had two)

The choice of the name 'Spartans' for the second phase of Project ORION had more to do with the training regime for Spartans in ancient times - taken from their families at age six and raised in a barracks, and frequently forced to fend for themselves with minimal resources as a test of endurance and resourcefulness. We can, I am sure, all draw parallels to the SPARTAN-II program here.

I don't recall that bit about Iris being the messenger - could you provide a citation for that?

Also a search pulled up another interesting reference to Iris, albeit not mythologically related. Please note the presence of the number 7: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_Iris

Nice find on the Iris 7 Arkanor, pretty neat.
Youve been around since '05 and have only made 4 posts? You seem pretty smart, where have you been?

arkanor is right the spartans from the iliad were a completely different class of spartans, pretty much the only thing similar is the fact that they come from the same city. After the times mentioned in the iliad greece was invaded by the dorians. The dorian sparta was the sparta involved in the persian war and the ones with the insane customs. Not the sparta of helen.

Are all the Leonidas-age comments spun off from my comment about 300? I was just joking. Ive looked into Spartan history multiple times (prior to the ARG) and know the difference between what were talking about.

here is another thing. my boss told me today that it should be isis. not iris. she said that because that Isis was "keeper of the flame" she also points out that the glyphs look alot like Chicago planetarium (top view) from the Flight Simulator series. And one last thing. scientist believe that the beginning of man began at 2560 bc. what happens in the halo universe is in the year 2552. could this be what cortana was saying from the e3 teaser trailer "this is the way the world ends" (the quote from The Hollow Me by T.S. Elliot)

i just wanted to point those out.

2560 BC? What scientists? Human beings have been around for around 2 million years. Chinese recorded history goes back 5000 years, 10000 if you count unverifiable verbal history.

No offense but I think your boss is a goddamn idiot.

What else are you going to point out? That there are misspellings on the SOTA page?

Why don't you see if your boss can figure those out.

Seriously, man, have you even read any of the existing threads? Or do you think we've been twiddling our thumbs, blind and ignorant, waiting for the wisdom and knowledge of you and your boss?

edit: Sorry. "mongoloid boss" was unnecessary.

Edit: I think hogwash's boss was on the right track, but stopped short. I mean, Egypt is a bit off course, but closer to Somalia, so that makes sense. But I think it game should be called Prometheus, because he was the bringer of light. Iris AND Isis are both, WRONG! I just wanted to point this out.

I thought it was well known that Bungie was inspired by history? I mean from the books we know the name Spartans came from the 300 story (Sorry can't remember the name of the battle) and the original games, Marathon, were named after a famous Greek battle as well.

And has been mentioned many times part of the Halo story seems to have been taken from the bible with reference to the ark and the coming flood.

[OT] I watched Evan Almighty last night and was trying not to laugh when I was picturing his ark on a sea of the Flood.
