Maybe they will change it to 'The Stuff. The Sequel'.

I HIGHLY doubt they'll change the name with just a month to go on the release. I mean, there aren't a hell of a lot of people that know the name's Cloverfield, but enough that it would be a pretty big no-no to change the name this far into it.

The name is Cloverfield and it's not going to change, seems to be alot of confusion about this.
The name is definely Cloverfield now . In the new interview by the director he said at one time there was another title. A title that had one word, was mysterious, and protrayed a certain aspect of the movie.

Well i like the 'supposed' movie title "Cloverfield"...
It has a vague/elusive feel about it...people not involved with the ARG,
Im sure will be curious as to what a...'Cloverfield has to do with a monster owning NY'...and result in more bucks for all concerned Smile

Anyways its a better title than 'Robs party was crap'.

I gotta be honest- I've been with this ever since the teaser was released in July and I STILL don't know why it's called Cloverfield.

There have been plenty of theories though. Everything from it being the name of the street that Bad Robot Productions is on to a theory I heard on my facebook group:

""Clovers (Trifolium spp.) are used as food plants by the larvae of a number of Lepidoptera species" - I guess this would explain the smaller creatures (larvae) and humans are the clovers"

My theory: it *was* going to be called "Overnight". But we've been referring to it as "Cloverfield" for six months now. Why change it and potentially lose the name recognition?

If it had a different name tomorrow, half the people that knew it as "Cloverfield" wouldn't make the correlation.

Overnight would have been logical... but at the same time, Cloverfield is what they're calling this thing [the monster]. They didn't call Godzilla, "Awakened" due to Godzilla's awaking by the Hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific Ocean... It was called "Cloverfield." Granted- Cloverfield doesn't give me a sense of cinematic dread like "Godzilla" would, but all the same- it's what they're calling the monster, that's why the title could never be "Overnight" anyways.

Uh, they're not calling the MONSTER "Cloverfield"... they're calling the INCIDENT "Cloverfield".

"Multiple sightings of [incident named 'Cloverfield']"?

or

"Multiple sightings of [subject named 'Cloverfield']"?

Honestly, I think it could be either.

"As for that "case designate" reference, anyone who has seen the clips from the film knows that "Cloverfield" is the case name that the government has assigned to whatever or whoever is doing all that destruction in New York."

- Matt Reeves

The government is calling this thing Cloverfield [for whatever reason]

I've avoided most of the interviews, so thanks for the clarification.

According to the Michael Stahl-David interview:

Quote:
We did, however, learn that the monster is not named in the movie ("We took to calling it Clover ... when the movie comes out, people are gonna name it")

so the cast called it Clover just for name's sake?

And the people get to name it.

Pretty obvious what we should call it... Very Happy
