Here's the picture of the claw marks.

Ignore the red/orange light in the upper right corner, it's a reflecton of an overhead light.

Man, that thing has to be at least as big as the statue. Two to three claws perhaps..nice picture.

Do also keep in mind that although the statue's only around 120' high, it does stand on a 150' high base. So, considering that the slash is an upswing, you're looking at it being around 350'-400' tall or more.

I've already estimated the monster's approximate height based on the teaser poster - we can identify known buildings with known hights, specifically the Chase Manhattan building with a high mark on it. The Chase Manhattan building is 248 meters high, putting Abrams' monster at around that height. That's about 800' tall.

The statue of Liberty from ground to tip of the torch is 99 meters high, and Godzilla in it's last form was 100 meters high. That gives you a better comparison as to how big Abrams' monster is to known objects and other ficticious creatures.

What if the monster flies? Then it doesn't have to be 800 ft tall.

That's possible, but I think it's more likely that it actually *is* that tall, considering the way the buildings look - as if something pushed right through them.

You're of course right, and there's no monster more american than the native american legend of the Thunderbird.
and the story of Thunderbird and Whale

But I'm not sure that I'd enjoy New York City being destroyed by a big bird, only to be defeated by avian flu.
In the end it was the microscopic viruses that defeated the enemy which man could not. And then Tom Cruise returns his daughter to her mother and her boyfriend, and his son makes his own way home, and...oops, wrong movie.

The poster doesn't seem to depict a flying monster, but rather a monster that swam up to shore and started walking through New York.
