Rethinking Art (Y2Kveteran)
Bothered about Boulder

So let me refresh people's memories by reposting the three Boulder CraigsList ads - the first came with the very first batch, and the last with the most recent.

You: Thinking you're safe

Do you sleep easier here even knowing what you know? Seeing what you see? This is beyond imagination. This is real. There is no safe place. You know it as well as I do and, yet, here you stand. Does it make it easier?

You: Watching them
Me: Watching you

Soaking wet, I begin the long journey to the angel. The streets are dark and nearly empty. Fear has driven people into their homes. Each window becomes a screen into the lives lived in candlelit rooms. It's here that you can see the differences in people. Are they huddled in the corner or are they devising a plan, talking to those they know, testing their theories, and changing their destiny?

One window shows a table filled with cats. Another shows people buried under an avalanche of paper. Four? Five? Six? More? It's hard to tell. Are they struggling to get out from under it or are they hoping to hide there forever, buried under plans that lead nowhere.

You're standing at the window watching. Knowing what they're doing. An easy target. Waiting for you to strike.

You: Watching him
Me: Watching you

I walk up the street towards the cemetery.

Avoiding shadows. Avoiding darkness. Avoiding madness.

Providence jumps out in front of me. Howling. Anxious.

Waiting.

Danger lurks. You lurk.

Hiding. Watching. Aware.

Tracked.

OK, so got that, right? Now here are some excerpts from some private messages between Marie and I:

It's great to see Jen back on the boards. That puts my mind partly at ease, y'know? But every time I see a city come up on the CraigsLists that is home to a sentry, I get jumpy! Speaking of which, Boulder came up, which as you know is where Art lives. If BA's dreams are getting at our browsing habits, then according to this CL it seems Art is lurking a bunch. Rolling Eyes

Marie wrote:
This can't be right. Why would he do that? Certainly, he'd have something to say. He's not the sit back and be quiet type. Plus, he and Bryce always got along. He'd have had said something then or offered his support. That's just what friends do. They don't lurk on the boards and not say anything. He would have sent me a message. He just would have. Wouldn't he?

Even with Kevin. I know they fought, but there has to be something there. He'd want to express some sorrow, even if he wasn't feeling it. It's the nice thing to do and, if not that, then he'd finally get the last word in on Kevin.

If you are right, he must have a reason. I can't imagine what that would be, but he must have one. Confused

Map wrote:
Oh, and the Art thing - I was just guessing, you know? I mean, the other Boulder posting was kind of watch-y, but I'd guess it's just nothing, y'know?

Marie wrote:
You might be right about Art. I just can't accept that. If he's been around and didn't care to say anything to me about Bryce, I just don't know if I can shrug that off. I can take a lot of things, really, but I don't think that I would handle that very well. There are just things that you do and you don't do when it comes to your friends - even your online friends. It doesn't take much to drop an quick note saying "Marie - Give Bryce my best. -Art" We've known each other for years, I can't believe he wouldn't think to do that. Which, if he's lurking, means he actually thought about it and then made the effort to not do it. Oh that would make me so mad. But that's all just one big ugly thought and that's a way to get through the day.

So the gist of that is should we worry about Art? Is he a suspect of some sort? Or is he just lurking for some reason? What is going on?

I think you're on to something. You even seem to have Marie having second thoughts by the end of your conversation. So far the CL post's have been pretty spot on when describing our sentries and future events (unfortunately) so I'd keep a close eye on Art. That is, if he ever comes back. I think his last post was on May 24 or something. Where are these people?

This is great work mapmaker. I can never think of what to ask the sentries. It seems that talking to them is the way to get info. Cetainly this:

Are they huddled in the corner or are they devising a plan, talking to those they know, testing their theories, and changing their destiny?

Suggested a while ago that we should be talking to the Sentries more.

But then I don't know who to trust. I feel completely off-balance in this game. I think MKaos is honest as far as it goes, but I think all the sentries are hiding things from us. I don't know how best to get them to tell us. Social engineering, anyone?

If someone convinced HPHack to visit BA, he didn't share that with us. I know people asked him why he went.

Just a quick comment: it was Kevin (GetMEout) who visited BA, not Howard (HPHack).

Also, cather pointed out that Y2KVeteran (Art) was the only one of the sentries to have their AIM information put out there. I have not had him on my buddy list, but cath said she had, and that he had not shown up.

ooops. Sorry about that. I'm getting the Sentries confused instead of knowing them better. I wish I has some good ideas to add to this discussion, but I'm lost. I like it, but other than PMing the Sentries, and I don't have any good ideas there, I've got nothing.

I don't even understand the Craigslist stuff anymore.

Has anyone PMed Stu at all? Is he around?

Several times, but nothing back.

[META]All the while Marie was reassuring us that Howard and the others would be back (when the other PMs were AFK), she was pointedly asking if anyone had heard from Stu. My guess is that he's significant, either as another victim, or as something more sinister (I mean, nec.ronomi.com? Rolling Eyes ) - unfortunately, I have no idea how to proceed on that front.[/META]

Hm, this seems like a pretty solid theory to me.

Has anyone heard anything at all from Howard private-message-wise? My guess is not.

But, I say there's no reason to just "watch."

Anyone want to go ahead and call him out on it? See what happens?

I seem to remember around the time of the Retreat Forum, that the Sentries had the ability to check the IP addresses of people on the forum. Couldn't Marie check to see if Art has been lurking that way?? Or would he have to be logged in??

Art would have to be logged in.

Well I asked because of this, from the Boulder CL:

Quote:
Danger lurks. You lurk.

Hiding. Watching. Aware.

Tracked.

How can he be 'tracked'??? That's also the title of the CL, btw.

IP addresses can be logged everytime they go to the forums, whether they log in or not. It would be something to ask the sentries for help with.

Maybe the *could* be logged, but most forum software isn't doing it. There might be server logs, but that's more of a pain to dig thru. I imagine Marie as the type who could click on a button within the forum's admin panel, not access web server logs by hand.

I have a phpBB message board, which I think SO has a well (Its the same as UF too)
When I go into my admin pannel, I can see who is online, their last log in, when they last updated their profile, what their IP is, and where they are browsing on the forum.
This also shows guests, so as long as you know the IP, you can see if he is online or not.

I dont think however, you can see when he was last on as a 'guest' (not logged in) he would have to be online to see him.
I'll have a look at my admin pannel, to see if you can track guests, but I dont think you can.

I actually did ask her to track him. Here's what she said.

Marie wrote:
I can see who is on at all times, I've never seen him on and he hasn't opened any of my messages.

In the admin panel, there's a list of all the IPs on the site at any given time (usually about 20 different googlebots and a couple others), but I don't know what his is. Oh! I could probably find that by looking at the IP address on one of his old posts. I usually only do that for spammers, it almost feels wrong to do it for a real person Laughing I'd have to catch it him at just the right time, but it's worth a shot.

Marie wrote:
Ok, so it looks like he's posting from a couple different IP addresses. Most of them from one and then a few from a couple others. He's not on here right now, but I'll check whenever I remember to. I hope I don't catch him doing this. I don't know what I'd do. Or, really, what I could do. Yell at the screen?

So she's checking. Haven't heard that she's seen him on yet.

Do you think maybe she meant posting as different usernames using the same IP? (wishful thinking on my part that he's Exu or similar Twisted Evil )

I mean, don't a *lot* of people post from a couple different IP addresses? Isn't that sort of...normal? Unless we're trying to track down that some of them are from a different location than his usual, like, oh, from Los Angeles and Chapel Hill. ?
