Was searching Ebay to see if anything was there (slusho t-shirts, clues, anything) and there was nothing with "slusho", but when I searched with 1-18-08, there was an item of headless Statue of Liberty. Probably a fake, someone trying get money out of the buzz for this movie, but you guys should check it out nonetheless.

You've got to love the auction listing:

Several days after the Cloverfield/1-18-08 trailer was released I found this little gem at a local goodwill it bears a striking resemblance to the latest poster that showed up on the internet. While this is not actual Cloverfield memorabilia it is still kind of weird it's head was chopped off along with it's arm. If you want to see more pictures of it send me a message. The Statue was found and bought with the head and arm already torn off, no modifications were made. I've no idea why the owner of this statue tore off the head and arm. Coincidence or Viral marketing by Paramount Pictures?

That's what we in the trade call, 'a Statue of Liberty souvenir that was dropped on the floor and given away because it was broken'.

This all seems reminiscent of the Simpson's Episodes which led to and subsequently solved the "Who Shot Mr. Burns" mystery. The poducers went to a lot of trouble creating false endings for the production crew to animate and voice simply to prevent the real ending from being leaked. In the end, two completely different endings were produced, one where Wayland Smithers shot Burns to stop him from stealing the lollipop from Maggie, and the real one where the gun falls out of Burns' holster and goes off after landing in Maggie's lap, then falling under the car seat.

Actually the 'alternate' endings were all bogus, produced specifically for the clip show in which they aired and not actually for the two part Who Shot Mr.Burns arc.

It's obvious when they show the supposed ending where Smithers did do it... in the flashback he isn't a wreck like in the scenes set at Springfield City Hall.

The SOL has a wood frame inside, but it's not on fire. Does this mean that the monster has its own light source?

The Statue of Liberty presently has a steel frame and originally had a puddle iron frame. The only wooden frame involved was the one used to create the plaster moulds for when they bashed the copper into shape.

Most of your other points have to be chalked up to artistic licence, speed and time of day shouldn't be taken as reference for events in the film.

Besides, it's obviously daytime in the poster... it gives better scope for things to see then if it were at night.

Who'd have thunk it... Harry Knowles actually reported something true...

I also spy a Bad Robot logo... which presumably was hidden behind the $15 price tag on the 'Monstrous' poster.

On the discussion of monsters and monster movies featuring a "Colossus"
I wanted to share this link which lists almost every giant monster movie made in America and elsewhere.

http://www.giantmonstermovies.com/

This is definitely OOG, but a good reference to have handy since we are dealing with a giant monster movie. While Abrams is creating a "new" monster it is somewhat likely he'd look for inspiration. Plus with the whole lot of nothing going on at the moment, it may provide you with a nice diversion.

Peace.

Actually, Harry reported that the next posters would be "Barbarous" and "Ferocious". So, Harry was close, but not quite right. Furious is pretty close to Ferocious, though.

With all this talk of "Colossus" and broken statues, I just wanted to mention the good ol eight wonder of the world "Colossus of Rhodes". While not a monster still a giant statue named "Colossus" built on the isle of Rhodes in honor of that great sun charioteer "Helios 'da Godlike" as he's known on the street. Seems this "colossus" guy got all broken up over an earthquake.
Sad really.

I'm going to pull a newb here- I immediately think fake. The "Furious" poster is identical to the "Monstrous" one. Why release the "same" poster twice? Also- didn't the official poster get released sans "Monstrous"?

It looks like the same exact poster. The only difference I can see is the title ("Furious" instead of "Monstrous").

I'm thinking fake, too, tygr20. (you posted while I was typing!)

It's not a fake! JJ Abrams announced at Comic-Con that there is a series of FOUR posters.

I have the audio and transcript of his speech at CloverfieldClues.com

So far I have found: MONSTROUS, FURIOUS, & TERRIFYING

Maybe it's not a fake. It just astounds me that with all the hype they'd release identical posters, save the text.

You're right. I just found one on sale at eBay that's exactly the same but the tag line says "Terrifying". Sorry!

So, it looks like Abrams has already released 3 of the 4 posters, and they all look exactly the same except for the tag line. Is that right?

I think this is a nod to old monster movies. The trailers always had adjectives popping up like "Horrific!" etc.

I don't think it's unusual to release a series of posters...

Check out these Transformers posters:

We know it's not unusual to release a series of posters for a movie. What we're saying that we think it's unusual to release a series of identical posters with different tag lines.

Should I sue?

My good friend Dave Hoser did the attached artwork in 2005. It was for the programme of my musical, Footsteps to the Moon, performed in London the same year. Does look a bit similar...

theterrifyingmovie.com
also owned by Paramount

It's not really a surprise, since Paramount registered themonstrousmovie.com, but they also appear to have theterrifyingmovie.com. I couldn't get a lookup for thefuriousmovie.com, but it's registered to someone. Thebarbarousmovie.com, which was the other speculative poster title I saw floated around, is unregistered.

And that just means they are snatching those domain names up before non-Paramount people register them. It doesn't mean they will ever actually place a website w/ that name.

What is that? Forgive the MS Paint. Photoshop CS3 is refusing to work for me. But in the large poster picture on CloverfieldClues it looks like that isn't really supposed to be there.

If it is actual text I think it sorta looks like 52, or 5-2...
