Man, I can't believe I missed that it was a fake. This is my first ARG, so please excuse my eagerness for finding clues and such. Probably a fan copying the source of her page, or even yet, somebody trying to throw us off?

ARG or VIRAL

Tough question. I pretty new to this still so, I'm not really sure. Originally, I was considering this Viral Marketing due to the lack of material available. But, now with the presentation of the Myspace pages and the fact that someone is logging onto those every couple of days, it seems it may be leaning towards perpetuating a game. Just my opinion. On the other hand, there are no definite goals and no finite "rewards" for solving puzzles. In fact, there seem to be few or no puzzles at all.

Don't get me wrong - I def. think this is a game of some kind. I guess I'm just disappointed at how cliche these characters seem. Then again, if they all die, why bother going into more detail? And, I suppose if the people seemed too real, then we might've thought they were OOG. The real point is - could this be for a reason other than sloth on the part of the makers of these myspace pages? For example, it could mean that the info. on these myspace pages wasn't designed to really "flesh out" the characters, but to conceal coded information (somehow), under the guise of a standard profile page. But, then, coded info. for WHAT?! Hurm... I guess I'm just pissed b/c I can't identify that DAMN butterfly on Rob's shirt, and I'm tired of scrolling through lists of butterflies/moths. ARG (heh, no pun intended).

Anyone...? Help...?

Agreed... sort of. I've never played an ARG, but I've been a life-long fan of puzzles and puzzle-solving computer games (e.g., I learned to type while playing ZORK as a kid on my Apple II+ - Huzzah for Infocom!). I'm also a movie fanatic, so I really WANT this to be a movie-related game. Wink

While there's no def. goal or bit of info. we know to look for, there do seem to be things to piece together from the various myspace pages. For example, we confirm that Hawk is Rob's bro., b/c of the messages that talk about aunt peg - you've got to cross-reference myspace pages to figure that out. Also, we only found the myspace pages by putting 2 and 2 together from the backs of the photos to form Jamie Lascano's name (hers was the first myspace page found). And, I still think the "adios" shirt might mean something b/c diff. bits of the image are concealed in each picture - that seems staged. Another possibility is each person's b-day; we only know ages and zodiacs, so maybe that's something that can be figured out from other info (e.g., we know Jamie is 12/25 because of her blog comment about sharing her b-day w/Jesus).

Until we find any definite goal, I think it will be helpful to take special notice of anything that can only be learned by putting bits of information together (i.e., things we aren't told, but can definitely infer). And, esp. take note of any info. that only comes from cross-referencing different myspace pages. Those are my 2 pennies.

everyone seems like a cliche on myspace, seriously. I think they are relatively accurate myspace profiles. if they had any more in-depth writerly information on them, they would cease to be realistic profiles for myspace.

that said, I still think they are pretty good.

do you know a lot of 20-somethings? aren't they like this? the ones I know are.

i also agree that it's not really an ARG yet, but it does seem to be heading that way. we just use ARG terminology because it's convenient, right? Wink

music

I'm not familiar w/myspace (until now), so I'll take your word for it. I can see that, though, so point taken.

Anyway, for what it's worth, below are links to lyrics for the songs on each person's myspace page.

Rob's: "Girl is on my mind" by the Black Keys.

Beth's: "Come into my word" by Kylie Minogue [Youtube video]

Hud's: "Icky Thump" by the White Stripes

Jamie's: "Dashboard" by Modest Mouse

LenaDia's: "Party Like a Rock Star" by Shop Boyz

Lily's: "asa branca white" by Forro in the Dark (w/guest: David Byrne)
couldn't find the English lyrics that D. Byrne sings, but here is a site with the original Spanish lyrics:

Hawk's: no music.

David Byrne
References

I found it interesting that 2 of the profiles have David Byrne involved in them. One in the music playing and another has one of the Talking Heads albums as music they're currently listeneing to.

Great find Smile Now I'll check out the colors and try it in the slusho maker.

Just to point out, it may be a long shot, but I'm guess an oven mitt(en) would contain lining, which is the english word for the spanish word "Forro" which is part of the name of the spanish band Forro in the Dark
