Re: Lateral Riddles ...

Anway, aside from that, exactly what kind of questions do you think I should ask? I mean, I'd hate to break the conversation by asking a bunch of dumb questions ... especially if it's obvious that I'm trying to guide the conversation.

And, as a final side note, do you think that his commnet "You typically can't get the answer just from the clue. There's a whole long story behind the answer to that one" might mean something, or am I just reading too far into it? I mean, it could just be a coincidence ... but it seems rather befitting of this possible ARG, doesn't it?

If it were HUD, you could say "it almost sounds like an episode of LOST" since HUD listed LOST as a favorite T.V. show on his myspace page. But, even so, big deal, right? What would that get us?

I got no ideas, but it sounds like you've got a good opportunity here. Maybe just keep the puzzle thing going by asking him another riddle - any riddle, not necessarily a 'lateral' one. One thing to consider - what do we want to find out from Rob? I mean, that we COULD get him to tell us? One thing: his father and mother - who are they? Also - why is he going to Japan (eventually)? Think about your ultimate goal (what do you want to find out?) when deciding how to steer the conversation. I gotta go meet some folks for drinks (damn) - later!

Okay, here's my reply to Lil...fingers and toes crossed, everyone!

Oh, does that ever make sense! I'm sure I don't have to tell a fellow dem that there aren't a ton of minds like us in Texas. Hence the idea for a change of scenery. Like, in your photos everything seems so hip and fun - like the bar with the swing! Where is that!? And if the answer is "a sushi bar", I'll be there at 5. Wink

Tha "lamppost" line

TheMuslim the line "Sounds like something a lamppost could do" is actually from a television show called Flight of the Conchords on HBO. The two main characters are at an interview to get jobs as sign holders in NYC. The one guy says that line and is told he is over thinking the job and is rejected.

It's about a New Zealand band of two guys roughing it in New York City.
Maybe you could strike up a conversation about that show? It's fairly new.

I would, only I detest Myspace. So much so that I won't even create one for the sake of this ARG.

And the lateral riddles, good ones guys. Very Happy (Sorry, I'm mainly a lurker, just recognized that line.)

Nice. You will, of course, tell us her reply a.s.a.p. Shocked

How 'bout this for a lateral riddle: A bunch of people are at a party in Manhattan; after a loud roar, the statue of liberty's head is suddenly right outside their apartment. What happened?

I don't mean anyone should ask Rob et. al. this 'riddle' - but, isn't this, essentially, what this ARG will turn out to be (assuming there is one)? Point is: if there is a game, then the whole thing, starting with the trailer, is just one big lateral riddle (of sorts). Huzzah!

Re: Lateral Riddles ...

Fearisthe{heart}ofLove wrote:
I do have a raport starting with Rob. I sent him a message asking him to help me with a lateral riddle my prof. gave me ... I know the answer, but I thought that I might be able to guide the conversation if I get one going. Anyway, his reply to me was
---
"That one is classic, my personal fav. I'm not gonna give you the answer, though, that's no fun. You need to ask 'yes' or 'no' questions in lateral riddles. You typically can't get the answer just from the clue. There's a whole long story behind the answer to that one."
---

I don't know if the "My Personal Fave" comment might be telling, but the riddle I presented was A man goes into a restaurant, orders albatross, eats one bite, and kills himself. .

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
In the end it turns out that the man had crashed on a desert Island with his wife and a friend. His wife died soon after; a few weeks later the man and friend had exhausted their food supplies, so the friend goes off into the woods and returns with some "albatross meat". Now, zoom forward to the present, the man orders albatross at the resteraunt because it helps him remember his wife in a bittersweet way ... but the albatross tastes nothing like the food he had on the island - he kills himself as soon as he realizes the awful truth

And, as a final side note, do you think that his commnet [i]/i] might mean something, or am I just reading too far into it? I mean, it could just be a coincidence ... but it seems rather befitting of this possible ARG, doesn't it?

Of the 7-8 lateral riddles I know of, that one about the albatross stands out (like a sore thumb) as having, by far, the most convoluted 'backstory.' For example, compare it to the bartender/water/gun riddle - the answer to that one is: the guy had hiccups.

I know Rob didn't bring it up (Fearisthe{heart}ofLove mentioned it to Rob), but he did say that it was his "personal fav." Granted, it's also a story about people 'lost' on an island, so that could explain why it's his favorite. But then, there's also Rob's follow-up comment:

"You typically can't get the answer just from the clue. There's a whole long story behind the answer to that one"

So, he points out that his "personal fav." is unique in that it has a relatively complex backstory, and he also offers some general advice about solving lateral riddles - and, it's good advice, b/c in any lateral riddle, it's pointless to try to just guess the final answer from the clue your given (that's why you ask questions!). And, the key to figuring out one of these riddles is to start by asking very general questions. If you're told that a man asks a bartender for a glass of water and the bartender pulls a gun on him, you don't ask, e.g., "did the man sleep with the bartender's wife?" Instead, you ask indirect and general, questions - like "was there anything unusual about the man's appearance?" Or, "Was the bartender afraid?" You start that way and work your way down to the specifics. [this is why the albatross riddle is so 'out there' in terms of backstory].

So, the point from all this: If we're looking at the myspace messaging as a source of clues, and not just fun marketing, then we're assuming there are some kind of double-meanings to their replies, if not downright codes. Well, one double-meaning to this reply that Fearisthe{heart}ofLove got from Rob could easily be the PM's trying to tell us to be patient; b/c this Great Big Lateral Riddle (i.e., "The sun rises on January 19, 2008; the Statue of Liberty's head is missing and there's a gaping hole in the NYC skyline... what happened?") is going to take some time. We're not going to figure anything out from what we've been given so far. At this point, we're still in the very general question phase.

My 2 cents.

Not to be painfully literal about this whole process, but it would be interesting to see what would happen if that lateral riddle were posed to one of our characters. Rob, for instance. I'd do it myself, but I've had no luck engaging Rob in conversation.

Maybe because-
signup dates
rob- 06/13/07
hawk- 06/13/07
lena- 06/13/07
jamie- 07/23/07
hud-
beth-
lily- could someone tell me the signup dates for these three? for some reasons I can't see their signup dates on the View all blog entries.

Jamie updated her page, she made changes to the movie part. She removed some movies (edit: she didn't im sorry) and the "And Beerfest for drinking games!" part and added the what you can see right now on her page.

That's curious - do you think they removed that guy w/the poster because you pointed it out? Are they monitoring these threads that carefully, or am I just getting paranoid? Shocked
